The automotive door has a large finite element model in analysis and many design requirements such as stiffness, natural frequency, side intrusion, etc. Thus, various related governing equations should be solved for systematic analysis and design. Because each governing equation has different characteristics, it is almost impossible to solve them simultaneously. Instead, they are separately handled and the analysis results are incorporated into the design separately. Currently, the design is usually conducted by trials and errors with engineering intuition in design practice. In this research, MDO methods are proposed to solve the problems that share design variables in disciplines. The idea is from the Gauss-Seidel type method for multi-discipline analysis. The developed methods show stable convergence and the weight of the door is reduced by fifteen percent.

MDO(Multidisciplinary Design Optimization) methodology is an emerging new technology to solve a complicate structural analysis and design problem with a number of design variables and constraints. In this paper MDO methodology is adopted through the use of computer aided engineering(CAE) system. And this paper treats the structural design problem of RIROB(Reactor Inspection Robot) through the application of MDO methodology. In a MDO methodology application to the structural design of RIBOS, kinetodynamic analysis is done using a simple fluiddynamic analysis model for the warter flow over the sensor support surface instead of difficult fluid dynamic analysis. Simultaneously the structural static analysis is done to obtain the optimum structural condition. The minimum thickness (0.8cm) of the RIROB housing is obtained for the safe design of RIROB. The kinetodynamic analysis of RIROB. The kinetodynamic analysis of RIROB is done using ADAMS and the static structural analysis of RIROB is done using NISA.

MDO framework, which provides multidisciplinary system design and optimization environment, requires integration of the analyses codes developed at various computer languages and operating systems, integration of CAD and DBMS, and development of complex GUI. Emphases must be given to the software modification and upgrades in conjunction with the analysis code addition and MDO method implementation. In this study, techniques about system integration and analysis code interface have been studied extensively, and the database design and communication methods which can handle the MDO methods like MDF and CO have been studied. Using the dedicated MDO framework developed for the air vehicle design, the multidisciplinary fighter aircraft wing design has been performed to demonstrate the efficiency and usefulness of the software. Optimum wing configuration is derived using the gradient-based optimization methods within thirty design iterations.

This paper presents an ASF (Aluminum Space Frame) BIW optimal design, which minimizes the weight and satisfies multi-disciplinary constraints such as the static stiffness, vibration characteristics, low-speed crash, high-speed crash and occupant protection. As only one cycle CPU time for all the analyses is 12 hours, the ASF design having 11-design variable is a large scaled problem. In this study, ISCD-II and conservative least square fitting method is used for efficient RSM modeling. Then, ALM method is used to solve the approximate optimization problem. The approximate optimum is sequentially added to remodel the RSM. The proposed optimization method used only 20 analyses to solve the 11-design variable design problem. Also, the optimal design can reduce the] $15\%$ of total weight while satisfying all of the multi-disciplinary design constraints.

In system design, it is not always possible that all decision makers can cooperate fully and thus avoid conflict. They each control a specified subset of design variables and seek to minimize their own cost functions subject to their individual constraints. However, a system management team makes every effort to coordinate multiple disciplines and overcome such noncooperative environment. Although full cooperation is difficult to achieve, noncooperation also should be avoided as possible. Our approach is to predict the results of their cooperation and generate approximate Pareto set for their multiple objectives. The Pareto set can be obtained according to the degree of one's conceding coupling variables in the other's favor. We employ approximation concept for modelling this coordination and the mutiobjective genetic algorithm for exploring the coupling variable space for obtaining an approximate Pareto set. The approximation management concept is also used for improving the accuracy of the Pareto set. The exploration for the coupling variable space is more efficient because of its smaller dimension than the design variable space. Also, our approach doesn't force the disciplines to change their own way of running analysis and synthesis tools. Since the decision making process is not sequential, the required time can be reduced comparing to the existing multidisciplinary optimization techniques. This approach is applied to some mathematical examples and structural optimization problems.

In order to design the conceptual configuration of the short-range ballistic missile, the authors have established an optimization problem considering various aspects such as volume, aerodynamics, propulsion, structure, stability, and flight trajectory. For this purpose, the existing missile cases were analyzed and the design conditions and performance indices were derived. The performance of the whole system was analyzed by integrating each subsystem's model. Through the design example, we analyzed the relationship between various design variables and final performances.

Aircraft design pursues integrated design efforts by considering all design elements together. In the integrated design environment, it is crucial for the design data to be consistent, free of errorm, and most recent. Database design process consists of the analysis of the data which shall be stored and managed, the construction of the E-R Diagram, and the mapping of the database table. As a DBMS (DataBase Management System), Oracle 8i is employed to design and construct the database. The database design methodology is devised to apply for the several MDO(Multidisciplinary Design Optimization) techniques like MDF(MultiDisplinary Feasible), IDF(Individual Discipline Feasible), and CO(Collaborative Optimization). The defined process is demonstrated through a couple of design examples, including a simple numerical example and a UCAV(Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle) design optimization.

The flight controller should meet the flying qualities, stability margins, and time response requirement according to the class of a target aircraft or UAV. Classical design process of PID controller is a very time consuming process and needed trial and erros. The best way is to apply the multi-disciplinary optimization algorithm to meet the numerous constraints of controller requirements. This paper presents how multi-objective parameter optimization (CONDUIT) can be used to determine many design parameters of lateral stability and augmentation system for roll and heading controller of the small UAV. To verify the effectiveness of applying the optimization method, designed controller using optimization are compared with the baseline controller that is designed only considering the time responses.

In this research, design optimization of an aircraft wing has been performed using the fully automated Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) framework, which integrates aerodynamic and structural analysis considering nonlinear structural behavior. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) mesh is generated automatically from parametric modeling using CATIA and Gambit, followed by an automatic flow analysis using FLUENT. A computational structure mechanics (CSM) mesh is generated automatically by the parametric method of the CATIA and visual basic script of NASTRAN-FX. The structure is analyzed by ABAQUS. Interaction between CFD and CSM is performed by a fully automated system. The Response Surface Method (RSM) is applied for optimization, helping to achieve the global optimum. The optimization design result demonstrates successful application of the fully automated MDO framework.

In this study, large-scale distributed design approach for a life cycle cost (LCC) optimization of steel box girder bridges was implemented. A collaborative optimization approach is one of the multidisciplinary design optimization approaches and it has been proven to be best suited for distributed design environment. The problem of optimum LCC design of steel box girder bridges is formulated as that of minimization of the expected total LCC that consists of initial cost maintenance cost expected retrofit costs for strength, deflection and crack. To discuss the possibility of the application for the collaborative optimization of steel box girder bridges, the results of this algorithm are compared with those of single level algorithm. From the numerical investigations, the collaborative optimization approach proposed in this study may be expected to be new concepts and design methodologies associated with the LCC approach.
