  • The purpose of this paper was to understand the dynamics of deployment of large mesh antennas, and to provide a numerical method for determining the dynamic stiffness and the driving forces for the design. The deployment structure was numerically modeled using the frame elements. The eigenvalue analysis was demonstrated, with respect to the folded and unfolded configurations of the antenna. A multibody dynamic model was formulated with Kane's equation, and simulated using the pseudo upper triangular decomposition (PUTD) method for resolving the constrained problem. Based on the multibody model, the kinetics of the deployment, the motor driving forces, and the feasibility of the designed deployment structure were investigated.

  • A flexible-rigid multibody analysis was pen armed to examine the dynamic response of a heavy handling robot system under a worst motion scenario. A rigid body dynamics analysis was solved and compared with flexible-rigid multibody analysis. The modal analysis and test were also carried out to establish the accuracy and the validation of the finite element model used in this paper. For the flexible-rigid multibody simulation, stresses in several major bodies were interested, so that those parts are flexible and other parts are modeled as rigid body in order to reduce computer resources.

  • In this study, a procedure is presented for the dynamic analysis of a multibody tracked vehicle system. the planner tracked vehicle model used in this investigation is assumed to consist of two kinematically decoupled subsystems, i.e., the chassis subsys- tem and track sub-system. The chassis subsystem includes the chassis frame, sprocket, idler and rollers, while the track subsystem is represented as a closed kinematic chain consisting of rigid links interconnected by revolute joints. The recursive kinematic and dynamic formulation module of the vehicle will be developed.

  • In general the Maglev vehicle is run over the elevated track called guideway. Since the guideway is elevated, the flexibility of the guideway has an effect on the dynamic responses of a vehicle such as its stability and ride quality. To improve the running performance of the Maglev vehicle and design a cost effective guideway using the dynamic analysis, the dynamic analysis of the system requires the coupling model of the Maglev vehicle and guideway. A coupling model based on multibody dynamics is proposed and programmed. With the program, the UTM01, a low speed Maglev vehicle, is analyzed and discussed.

  • Dynamic behavior of missile which is fired in canister is analyzed by flexible multibody dynamics. The bending elasticity of missile is very important in case that missile is fired in the inclined launcher. In this paper, the force element model for the missile launching stage and the finite element model of missile are developed. The FEA model of missile is condensed into five lumped mass element model and the consistence between FE model and lumped mass model of missile is verified by modal analysis. As a result of analysis, sabot reaction force and pitch rate of missile for the variation of gap size and force element are obtained.

  • In the dynamic analysis of a mechanism, if one or more of the components are flexible, then the simulation will not be accurate because of the violation of the rigid body assumption. Mode shapes are used to represent the dynamic behavior of an elastic structure. A modal synthesis method which uses a combination of normal modes, constraint modes, and attachment modes, was used to represent effectively the elastic deformation of a flexible multibody. Since the combination of these modes should be different for each type of connecting part, the modal synthesis method was studied for the various types of interconnecting joints. In addition, the analysis procedure for the flexible body was explained. A satellite system with flexible solar panels was chosen as an example to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, safety analysis of the process of installing offshore structures such as manifolds and jacket-type substructures using floating cranes and barges in waves is performed. The safety analysis consists of three components. First, the dynamic responses of the offshore structure, cranes, and barge, all of which are moored and connected using wire ropes, are analyzed. Second, tensions in the wire ropes connecting the cranes and the offshore structures are calculated. Finally, any collision between the offshore structure and the cranes or the barge that transports the offshore structure is detected. Equations of motion of the offshore structure, cranes, and barge are formulated based on multibody dynamics, as well as considering the hydrostatic, hydrodynamic, and mooring forces. Additionally, proportional-derivative control of the tagline between the cranes and the offshore structure is performed to verify the safety of the installation process, as well as for reducing the dynamic response and collisions among them.

  • In this paper, the equations of motion are constructed systematically for multibody systems containing closed kinematic loops. For the displacement analysis of the closed loops, we introduce a new mixed coordinates by adding to the reference coordinates, relative coordinates corresponding to the degrees of freedom of the system. The mixed coordinates makes easy derive the explicit closed form solution. The explicit functional relationship expressed in closed form is of great advantages in system dimension reduction and no need of an iterative scheme for the displacement analysis. This forms of equation are built up in the general purpose computer program for the kinematic and dynamic analysis of multiboty systems.

  • Solar arrays and antennas of the satellite are usually stowed within the dimensions of the launch-vehicle fairing and deployed in the orbit. To solve such multibody dynamic problems, differential equations and algebraic equations are simultaneously solved, and special solution techniques are required. In this paper, Lagrange multipliers associated with the constraints are iteratively computed by monotonically reducing an appropriately defined constraint error vector, and the resulting equation of motion is solved by a well-established ODE technique. Defomable bodies as well as rigid bodies are treated, and applications to satellite solar arrays are explained.

  • This paper is concerned with a roiling piston type rotary compressor for air conditioning use. Vibration of the compressor is analyzed numerically and experimentally. Multibody dynamic analysis methods to predict the vibration is given. The compressor is modeled as a system composed of bodies, joints, and force elements. Experimental results are also shown to be compared with simulation results. A sensitivity study using different variables that affect the compressor vibration is also carried out. It is found that the mass of weight balancer plays an important role in acceleration.
