  • We propose a fiber grating sensor system for condition monitoring of large scale wind turbine blades. For the feasibility test of the proposed sensor system, a down-scaled wind turbine has been constructed and experimented. Fiber grating sensors were attached on a blade surface for distributed strain and temperature measurements. An optical rotary joint was used to transmit optical signals between the FBG sensor array and the signal processing unit. Instead of broadband light source, we used a wavelength-swept fiber laser to obtain high output power density. A spectrometer demodulation is used to alleviate the nonlinear wavelength tuning problem of the laser source. With the proposed sensor system we could measure dynamic strain and temperature profiles at multi-positions of rotating wind turbine blades.

  • Multi-wavelength Erbium-doped fiber(EDF) ring laser was developed by using a sampled fiber Bragg grating reflecting multiple wavelengths, which was formed by impressing periodical pressure on the outside of a fiber Bragg grating. The wavelength spacing was varied to 4.1nm, 1.41nm and 0.82nm, by pressing the grating with the pressure period $200{\mu}m$, $580{\mu}m$ and $1000{\mu}m$, respectively.

  • We fabricated a multi-layer diffraction grating inside fused silica glass by using a femtosecond laser direct writing method. The femtosecond laser with a wavelength of 515 nm, a pulse width of 250 fs, a repetition rate of 100 kHz, and an average output power of 6 W was used. Two layer diffraction grating with a grating period of $6{\mu}m$ was successfully fabricated with the layer gap of 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and $5{\mu}m$, respectively. Also, we investigated the diffraction pattern by illuminating a He-Ne laser beam. Finally, we demonstrated the diffraction grating with a grating period of $3{\mu}m$ by adjusting the gap of each layer with a grating period of $6{\mu}m$. Femtosecond laser direct writing technology of multi-layer has a potential to fabricate the diffraction grating with a grating period of below $1.5{\mu}m$.

  • To perform the marking on metal with high speed and non-contact using the laser beam of high energy, laser marking system is designed and fabricated applying the galvanometer scanner capable of high speed-precise beam positioning controlled by microprocessor. Laser is a Q-switched Nd:YAG producing multi-mode, wavelength, 1060nm. Optical system is composed of beam expander, scanning mirror and flat field lens. Consequently, the laser marking is satisfactorily achieved regardless of kinds of metal.

  • A femtosecond laser with 775nm central wavelength and 150 fs of temporal pulse width was used for multi layered glass cutting applications. Ultrashort pulse was effectively used for clean glass cutting with $50{\mu}m$ depth and minimum cutting width. Laser beam was split to two stages and focused on the top surfaces of each layer. Ablation threshold of used glass was measured to be $2.59J/cm^2$. In experiments, 200mW laser power and 1mm/s scanning speed was used for preliminary experiment. Air gap was the major defect occurring parameter and laser power was less sensitive to glass cutting in the experiment. The maximum cutting speed was measured to be 60mm/min with 2kHz, however, Maximum 3m/min cutting speed can be achievable with a commercially available laser with 100kHz.

  • Laser beam hardenling of 12%-Cr steel has been evaluated by using a continuous wave 3 kW CO$\_$2/ laser with a hardening mirror set. Experiment was performed on the optimum hardening condition with a laser power of 2.85kW and travel speed of 10 and 5 m/min. Multi passes have been alsotried to find the hardening characteristics of partly overlapped zone. The black paint to use at high temperature was adopted to increases the absorptivity of laser beam energy with the wavelength of 10.6 .mu. m at the surface of bese metal. The microstructure of the hardened layers was observed by using a light microscopy. SEM and TEM. A fine lamellar martensite formed in the hardened zones exhibits very high Vickers microhardness of 600 Hv, whereas the tempered martesite distributes in the base metal with Vickers microhardness of 240 Hv. It has been found that laser hardening with multi pass showed no significant drop of the hardness between adjacent passes.

  • Head up display is in increasing demand for advanced devices in the modern luxury vehicles. It helps drivers focus on driving environment on the road. While HUD technology with LED has advanced, the brightness in daylight can be still an issue to be resolved. Laser light source is a possible solution to overcome the brightness problem and optimal optics design is required for the best performance. Sample design of optics is proposed and detail procedure of lens design evaluation is presented in this paper. The results were characterized by using a ray tracing method and qualitative analysis for spot and DEE is also presented. The overall error or image distortion remained in the target range of $25{\mu}m$ and the simulated image demonstrated possible use in the automotive applications.

  • Using multi plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition system (Multi-PECVD), p-a-Si:H deposition layer as a $p^+$ region which was annealed by laser (Q-switched fiber laser, $\lambda$ = 1064 nm) on an n-type single crystalline Si (100) plane circle wafer was prepared as new doping method for single crystalline interdigitated back contact (IBC) solar cells. As lots of earlier studies implemented, most cases dealt with the excimer (excited dimer) laserannealing or crystallization of boron with the ultraviolet wavelength range and $10^{-9}$ sec pulse duration. In this study, the Q-switched fiber laser which has higher power, longer wavelength of infrared range ($\lambda$ = 1064 nm) and longer pulse duration of $10^{-8}$ sec than excimer laser was introduced for uniformly deposited p-a-Si:H layer to be annealed and to make sheet resistance expectable as an important process for IBC solar cell $p^+$ layer on a polished n-type Si circle wafer. A $525{\mu}m$ thick n-type Si semiconductor circle wafer of (100) plane which was dipped in a buffered hydrofluoric acid solution for 30 seconds was mounted on the Multi-PECVD system for p-a-Si:H deposition layer with the ratio of $SiH_4:H_2:B_2H_6$ = 30:120:30, at $200^{\circ}C$, 50 W power, 0.2 Torr pressure for 20 minutes. 15 mm $\times$ 15 mm size laser cut samples were annealed by fiber laser with different sets of power levels and frequencies. By comparing the results of lifetime measurement and sheet resistance relation, the laser condition set of 50 mm/s of mark speed, 160 kHz of period, 21 % of power level with continuous wave mode of scanner lens showed the features of small difference of lifetime and lowering sheet resistance than before the fiber laser treatment with not much surface damages. Diode level device was made to confirm these experimental results by measuring C-V, I-V characteristics. Uniform and expectable boron doped layer can play an important role to predict the efficiency during the fabricating process of IBC solar cells.
