This study investigated the community structure and seasonal variation of the fish assemblages on Jangbong tidal flat, Incheon, Korea. Fish were collected monthly using a small otter trawl from November 1999 to January 2001. Thirty-six fish species were recorded, with a mean density of 185 individuals and biomass of 2,594.3 gWWt. The most abundant species by number were Johnius grypotus (23.7%), Acanthogobius hasta (17.8%), and Cynoglossus joyneri (10.7%), while the dominant species by catch weight were Acanthogobius hasta (21.2%), Sebastes schlegeli (16.2%), J. grypotus (14.0%), and C. joyneri (10.8%). Cluster analysis and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (nMDS) were applied to assess the seasonal fluctuation in the fish assemblages. Based on the result of the cluster analysis and nMDS ordination, the faunal group could be divided into cold- and warm-water specialist groups. The cold-water specialists included A. hasta, Acanthogobius luridus, Triaenopogon barbatus, Tridentiger trigonocephalus, and Liza haematocheila. The warm-water specialists were J. grypotus, C. joyneri, S. schlegeli, and Hexagrammos otakii. In conclusion, the community structure showed a distinct seasonal trend, which seemed to be related to the seasonal fluctuations in water temperature.
The feeding habits of six shark species, Scyliorhinus torazame, Mustelus manazo, Squalus megalops, Isurus oxyrinchus, Alopias pelagicus, and Carcharhinus plumbeus were studied using the stomach contents of 463 specimens collected between January and February 2007 in the southern sea of Korea. They consumed different prey items. S. torazame preyed mainly crustaceans, and M. manazo on crustaceans and fishes. S. megalops, I. oxyrinchus, A. pelagicus, and C. plumbeus consumed predominately fishes. Non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (NMDS) ordination plots emphasized that dietary similarities separated thesix shark species into three trophic groups based on similarities in percentage Index of Relative Importance (%IRI): Group I (crustacean feeders), Group II (fish and crustacean feeders), and Group III (fish feeders).
The economic impact of swine mycoplasma infection is high. An accurate diagnosis is often difficult and time consuming. We report the development and validation of an effective multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay that detects Mycoplasma (M.) hyopneumoniae and M. hyorhinis. The multi detection of M. hyopneumoniae and M. hyorhinis primer set were employed to detect mycoplasma species and typing of the species was performed on the basis of sequence analysis of the PCR product. The target nucleic acid fragments were specifically amplified by M. hyopneumoniae and M. hyorhinis PCR with 16S ribosomal DNA primers. Single and mixed Mycoplasma species DNA templates were used to evaluate the specificity of the multiplex assay. The corresponding specific DNA products were amplified for each pathogen. The multiplex PCR assay provides a novel tool for simultaneous detection and differentiation of M. hyopneumoniae and M. hyorhinis.
The resistance-capacitance (RC) delay of signals through interconnection materials becomes a big hurdle for high speed operation of semiconductors which contain multi-layer interconnections in smaller scales with higher integration density. Low-k materials are applied to the inter-metal dielectric (IMD) materials in order to overcome the RC delay. Relaxation continuum (RCT) model that includes neutral-species transport model have developed to model the etching process in a capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) device. We present the parametric study of the modeling results of a two-frequency capacitively coupled plasma (2f-CCP) with $N_2/H_2$ gas mixture that is known as promising one for organic low-k materials etching. For the etching of low-k materials by $N_2/H_2$ plasma, N and H atoms have a big influence on the materials. Moreover the distributions of excited neutral species influence the plasma density and profile. We include the neutral transport model as well as plasma one in the calculation. The plasma and neutrals are calculated self-consistently by iterating the simulation of both species till a spatio-temporal steady state profile could be obtained.
In this study, fungal strains designated as KNUF-22-14A and KNUF-22-15A were isolated from soil samples in Korea. These two strains were identified based on cultural and morphological characteristics as well as phylogenetic analyses and were found to be morphologically and phylogenetically identical. Upon their morphological comparison with closely related species, such as Tolypocladium album, T. amazonense, T. endophyticum, T. pustulatum, and T. tropicale, a difference in the size of short phialides [0.6-2.4(-9.3)×0.8-1.4 ㎛] was observed. Meanwhile, these strains had larger conidia (1.2-3.0×1.2-3.0 ㎛) than T. album, T. amazonense, T. endophyticum, and T. tropicale and smaller conidia than T. pustulatum. Phylogenetic analyses using a multi-locus datasets based on ITS, LSU, and SSU showed that KNUF-22-14A and KNUF-22-15A formed a distinct cluster from previously identified Tolypocladium species. Thus, these fungal strains isolated from soil in Korea are proposed as a novel species according to their characteristics and are named Tolypocladium globosum sp. nov.
Objectives : Due to the morphological similarity of the pericarp and description of multi-species in National Pharmacopoeia of Korea and China, the Zanthoxylum Pericarpium is difficult to authenticate adulterant in species levels. Therefore, we introduced the sequence analysis of DNA barcode and identification of single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP) to establish a reliable tool for the distinction of Zanthoxylum Pericarpium from its adulterants. Methods : To analyze DNA barcode region, genomic DNA was extracted from twenty-four specimens of authentic Zanthoxylum species and inauthentic adulterant and the individual internal transcribed spacer regions (rDNA-ITS and ITS2) of nuclear ribosomal RNA gene were amplified using ITS1, ITS2-S2F, and ITS4 primer. For identification of species-specific sequences, a comparative analysis was performed using entire DNA barcode sequences. Results : In comparison of four Zanthoxylum ITS2 sequences, we identified 16, 4, 6, and 4 distinct species-specific nucleotides enough to distinguish Z. schinifolium, Z. bungeanum, Z. piperitum, and Z. simulans, respectively. The sequence differences were available genetic marker to discriminate four species. Futhermore, phylogenetic relationship revealed a clear classification between different Zanthoxylum species showing 4 different clusters. These results indicated that comparative analysis of ITS2 DNA barcode was an useful genetic marker to authenticate Zanthoxylum Pericarpium in species levels. Conclusions : The marker nucleotides, enough to distinguish Z. schinifolium, Z. piperitum, Z. bungeanum, and Z. simulans, were obtained at 30 SNP marker nucleotides from ITS2 sequences. These differences could be used to authenticate official Zanthoxylum Pericarpium from its adulterants as well as discriminating each four species.
Sedirea japonica is one of the critically endangered species in South Korea mostly due to artificial harms such as illegal collection and habitat destruction. Therefore, artificial propagation through improving germination rate, increasing growth, and controlling flowering is meaningful for the conservation and reintroduction of S. japonica. It is suggested that cytokinins are one of the multi-factors that contribute to plant growth and floral responses. Especially, exogenous cytokinins have been known to induce or promote shoot growth or earlier flowering in orchids. Therefore, it was investigated how the application of 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) influenced the growth and inflorescence of S. japonica. A foliar spray containing BA at 100, 200, 300, and 400 ppm was applied from 1st July to 30th December 2021. Leaf length, leaf length growth rate, leaf width, and width and length ratio were measured as growth-related factors. Visible inflorescence rate, inflorescence length, the number of flowers per inflorescence, and the distance between the stalks were measured as flowering-related factors. Growth-related factors except for leaf growth rate were not affected by BA treatments, while leaf growth rate was significantly increased by 200 ppm of BA treatment. The visible inflorescence rate increased by 200 ppm of BA treatment, and there seems an optimal concentration and threshold of BA treatment. An iterative experiment with more seedlings and measurement factors would be helpful to figure out the effects of exogenous BA treatment on S. japonica, and it can be applied for mass propagation.
The multi-environment probability density function model has been applied to simulate the turbulent stratified premixed flames. The direct quadrature method of moments (DQMOM) has been adopted to solve the transport PDF equation due to its computational efficiency and robustness. Computations are made for the non-swirling turbulent stratified premixed flames including SWB1, SWB5 and SWB9. The numerical results obtained in this study are precisely compared with experimental data in terms of axial velocity, unconditional means and conditional means for scalar field including temperature and species mass fraction.
In this work, the electrochemical properties of the surface treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) are investigated for supercapacitors. Nitrogen- and oxygen functional groups containing MWNTs are prepared by nitrogen precursors and acidic treatment, respectively. The surface properties of the MWNTs are confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Zeta-potential measurements. The electrochemical properties of the MWNTs are investigated by cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectra, and charge-discharge cycling performance in 1 M $H_2SO_4$ at room temperature. As a result, these functionalized MWNTs lead to an increase in the specific capacitance as compared with the pristine MWNTs. It proposes that the pyridinic and pyridinic-N-oxides nitrogen species influence on the specific capacitance due to their positive charges, and thus an improved electron transfer at high current loads, since they are the most important functional groups affecting capacitive behaviors.
This study quantified the carbon storage and uptake by street trees in Seoul and explored suitable planting and management strategies. A systematic sampling model was used to select 50 plots to survey the structures of street trees. The average density and cover of street trees were approximately 5.8 trees/$100m^2$ and 12.1%, respectively. Trees with a dbh of less than 30 cm accounted for about 66.3% of the total number of trees surveyed. The total carbon storage and uptake by the street trees were approximately 103,641 t and 10,992 t/yr, respectively. The total carbon uptake equaled the amount of annual carbon emissions from driving of about 11,000 cars. Street tree planting and management strategies were proposed to enhance carbon uptake. They included multi-layered and multi-aged planting, securing ground and space for plant growth, and avoiding excessive tree pruning.
