  • Design issues of multi-beam satellite transponders have been actively studied. Multi-beam satellite transponders can be used in the first SS/TDMA system for satellite interactive multi-media services in Korea. To be used in SS/TDMA systems, a satellite transponder must have either base-band OBP(On-board Processor) or MSM(Microwave Switching Matrix) on-board switch those are capable to provide inter-connections to many earth stations in different beam coverages or different frequencies, i.e., Ka and Ku band. The use of MSM is considered proper due to a substantial developing cost and the required high techniques in base-band OBP. In this paper, we present a designed scheme of transponder being optimally suitable to the targeted SS/TDMA satellite systems, also analysis the performance.

  • Multi-body spacecraft attitude and configuration control formulations based on the use of collaborative control theory are considered. The control formulations are based on two-player, nonzero-sum, differential game theory applied using a Nash strategy. It is desired that the control laws allow different components of the multi-body system to perform different tasks. For example, it may be desired that one body points toward a fixed star while another body in the system slews to track another satellite. Although similar to the linear quadratic regulator formulation, the collaborative control formulation contains a number of additional design parameters because the problem is formulated as two control problems coupled together. The use of the freedom of the partitioning of the total problem into two coupled control problems and the selection of the elements of the cross-coupling matrices are specific problems ad-dressed in this paper. Examples are used to show that significant improvement in performance, as measured by realistic criteria, of collaborative control over conventional linear quadratic regulator control can be achieved by using proposed design guidelines.

  • A compact imaging system, the Multi-spectral Earth Imaging System (MEIS) was developed and operated on an engineering test satellite, KITSAT-3 at the orbital altitude of 720 km. The MEIS takes multi-spectral images of the earth's surface with the swath width of 48 km and the ground sampling distance of 13.8 m in three spectral bands. A brief technical description of the KITSAT-3 MEIS and the result from its initial operation since early June, 1999 are presented. The quality of images produced by the KITSAT-3 MEIS was found comparable to that of images from existing commercial earth observation satellites from its preliminary assessment.

  • In this paper, we presented interference scenarios and an evaluation methodology for the co-frequency radio interference between a multi-beam mobile satellite communication system and a mobile communication system in 2.1 GHz band. Radio interferences between these systems are calculated using a minimum coupling loss method and an assesment for minimum separation distances was conducted for coexistence of a mobile satellite system and a mobile system in the same geographical area.

  • The navigation system like GPS which is core technology is based on Code Division Multiple Access(CDMA) techniques. To receive satellite signal smoothly in CDMA, received signals have to synchronize with spread code. In this paper, we focus on the code tracking methods among synchronization techniques. The conventional delay lock loop(DLL) is unsuitable for multi-path channel. We will introduce how it overcomes distortion by multi-path. We will propose method that separates out multi-path signals and tracks the each path signals. And we will confirm performance of proposed method using Spirent simulator.

  • Dust-storm is one of the heaviest hazardous weather which frequently affects most part of northern China in spring. Satellite multi-spectral observations can provide significant information for detecting and quantitative determining the property of dust-storm . An algorithm to monitor dust-storm automatically was developed based on satellite observation. The algorithm utilizes split widows technique and spectral classification technique and also developed a new dust remote sensing product Infra -red Difference Dust Index (IDDI) proxy dust-loading dataset using GMS-5.

  • In this paper, the introductory study of the multi input multi output (MIMO) techniques for satellite communication systems is presented. Because of the advantage of wide coverage of satellite, it has been considered for broadcasting services and fill-in services. On the other hand, state of the art multi input multi output (MIMO) techniques such as space time code (STC) and spatial multiplexing (SM) makes the terrestrial system increase link performance and their coverage, and also increase the link throughput. For these regard, in order to satisfy the requirements of the next generation communications and coexists with terrestrial systems harmoniously, the studying about satellite MIMO techniques is necessary. In this paper, we introduce some system model and scenarios to apply MIMO technique to intermediate module repeater (IMR). The possibility of these techniques and technical requirements are also considered. Especially, Space time code is used to enhance IMRs coverage and increase the link performance, and space time multiplexing is utilized to multiplex satellite broadcasting signals with local broadcasting signal in IMR cell.

  • In this paper, a new interleaving method for spatially-multiplexed multi-input-multi-output (SM-MIMO) scheme in an integrated mobile satellite and terrestrial system is proposed. In the proposed scheme, the transmitted bits for satellite path are interleaved in an innovative way to make sure that bits multiplied with different channel gains will be located alternatively in one received codeword after demapping, in order to compensate the performance degradation due to high-correlation of the satellite path. In addition, the interleaver can be implemented in a computationally efficient way and with the minimum time delay.
