  • The most widely used data mining technique is to find association rules. Association rule mining is the method to quantify the relationship between each set of items in very huge database based on the association thresholds. There are some basic association thresholds to explore meaningful association rules ; support, confidence, lift, etc. Among them, confidence is the most frequently used, but it has the drawback that it can not determine the direction of the association. The net confidence and the attributably pure confidence were developed to compensate for this drawback, but they have other drawbacks. In this paper we consider some predictive similarity measures for binary data in cluster analysis and multi-dimensional analysis as association threshold to compensate for these drawbacks. The comparative studies with net confidence, attributably pure confidence, and some predictive similarity measures are shown by numerical example.

  • The watermarking is the technique that embeds or extracts the certain data without the change of the original data for the copyright protection of the multimedia contents. Watermark-embedded contents must not be distinguished by human's eye and must be robust to the various image processing and the intentional distortions. In this paper, we propose a new watermarking technique applied in the wavelet domain which has both the spatial and frequency information of a image. For both the robustness and the invisibility, the positions for embedding the watermark is selected with the multi-threshold. We search the similarity between highly correlated coefficients in the each subband and decide the mark space after verifying the significance in the specified subband. The similarity is represented by the coefficient difference between the subbands and its distribution is used in the watermark embedding and extracting. The embedded watermark can be extracted without the original image using the relationship of the subbands. By these properties the proposed watermarking algorithm has the invisibility and the robustness to the attacks such as JPEG compression and the general image processing.

  • This paper proposes a face recognition method based on modified Otsu binarization, Hu moment and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Proposed method is robust to brightness, contrast, scale, rotation, and translation changes. Modified Otsu binarization can make binary images that have the invariant characteristic in brightness and contrast changes. From edge and multi-level binary images obtained by the threshold method, we compute the 17 dimensional Hu moment and then extract feature vector using LDA algorithm. Especially, our face recognition system is robust to scale, rotation, and translation changes because of using Hu moment. Experimental results showed that our method had almost a superior performance compared with the conventional well-known principal component analysis (PCA) and the method combined PCA and LDA in the perspective of brightness, contrast, scale, rotation, and translation changes with Olivetti Research Laboratory (ORL) database and the AR database.

  • In this study, vegetation succession and the rate of consequent topsoil development were investigated in shallow landslide scars of sedimentary rock slopes covered by volcanic ashes and pumice in Kagoshima prefecture, Japan. Seven shallow landslide scars of different ages were selected as study areas. In the initial period after the occurrence of a shallow landslide, deciduous broad-leaved trees such as Mallotus japonicus or Callicarpa mollis were occupied in the areas. Approximately 30 years after the landslide, evergreen broad-leaved trees such as Cinnamomum japonicum invaded in the areas, already existed present deciduous broad-leaved trees. After 50 years, the summit of the canopy comprised evergreen broad-leaved trees such as Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii and Machilus thunbergii. Moreover, the diversity of vegetation invading the site reached the maximum after 15 years, followed by a decrease and stability in the number of trees. The total basal areas under vegetation increased with time. It was concluded that the vegetation community reaches the climax stage approximately 50 years after the occurrence of a shallow landslide in the study areas, in terms of the Fisher-Williams index of diversity (${\alpha}$) and the prevalence of evergreen broad-leaved trees. Moreover, according to the results of topsoil measurement in the study areas, the topsoil was formed at the rate of 0.31 cm/year. The development of topsoil usually functions to improve the multi-faceted functions of a forest. However, when the increased depth of topsoil exceeds the stability threshold, the conditions for a shallow landslide occurrence are satisfied. Therefore, we indicated to control the depth of topsoil and strengthen its resistance by forest management in order to restrain the occurrence of shallow landslides.

  • As an experimental reference population, crosses between Korean native pig and Landraces were established and information on growth traits was recorded. Animals were genotyped for 24 microsatellite markers covering chromosomes 2, 6, and 7 for partial-genome scan to identify chromosomal regions that have effects on growth traits. quantitative trait loci (QTL) effects were estimated using interval mapping by the regression method under the line cross models with a test for imprinting effects. For test of presence of QTL, chromosome-wide and single position significance thresholds were estimated by permutation test and normal significance threshold for the imprinting test were derived. For tests against the Mendelian model, additive and dominance coefficients were permuted within individuals. Thresholds (5% chromosome-wide) against the no-QTL model for the analyzed traits ranged from 4.57 to 4.99 for the Mendelian model and from 4.14 to 4.67 for the imprinting model, respectively. Partial-genome scan revealed significant evidence for 4 QTL affecting growth traits, and 2 out of the 4 QTLs were imprinted. This study demonstrated that testing for imprinting should become a standard procedure to unravel the genetic control of multi-factorial traits. The models and tests developed in this study allowed the detection and evaluation of imprinted QTL.

  • Background: The current study investigated the effects of Piper longumine on radio-sensitization of human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells and underlying mechanisms. Materials and Methods: Human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells were cultured in vitro and those in logarithmic growth phase were selected for experiments divided into four groups: control, X-ray exposed, Piper longumine, and Piper longumine combined with X-rays. Conogenic assays were performed to determine the radio-sensitizing effects. Cell survival curves were fitted by single-hit multi-target model and then the survival fraction (SF), average lethal dose ($D_0$), quasi-threshold dose ($D_q$) and sensitive enhancement ratio (SER) were calculated. Cell apoptosis was analyzed by flow cytometry (FCM). Western blot assays were employed for expression of apoptosis-related proteins (Bc1-2 and Bax) after treatment with Piper longumine and/or X-ray radiation. The intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level was detected by FCM with a DCFH-DA probe. Results: The cloning formation capacity was decreased in the group of piperlongumine plus radiation, which displayed the values of SF2, D0, Dq significantly lower than those of radiation alone group and the sensitive enhancement ratio (SER) of D0 was1.22 and 1.29, respectively. The cell apoptosis rate was increased by the combination treatment of Piper longumine and radiation. Piper longumine increased the radiation-induced intracellular levels of ROS. Compared with the control group and individual group, the combination group demonstrated significantly decreased expression of Bcl-2 with increased Bax. Conclusions: Piper longumine at a non-cytotoxic concentration can enhance the radio-sensitivity of MDA-MB-231cells, which may be related to its regulation of apoptosis-related protein expression and the increase of intracellular ROS level, thus increasing radiation-induced apoptosis.

  • As the number of the Internet users increases explosively, a solution for this problem is web caching. So, many techniques on improving cache server performance have been suggested. In this paper, we analyze the cause of the bottleneck in cache servers, and propose an arbitral thread and delayed caching mechanism as a solution. We use an arbitral thread in order to provide a quick service to user requests through eliminating the ready multi-thread search problem in case of disk writing operation. We also use delayed caching in order to provide stable system operation through avoiding overloaded disk operation and queue threshold. Proposed cache server is implemented through modification on SQUlD cache server, and we compare its performance with the original SQUID cache server.

  • To date, no clear threshold that has been established for defining an adequate store of vitamin D for bone health. Therefore, this study aims to determine the required level of vitamin D to maintain a healthy skeleton based on bone remodelling process among healthy adult population. This was a cross sectional study, involving a healthy adult population in Kota Bharu, Malaysia, aged 18~50 years. We measured serum 25(OH)D (vitamin D), serum parathyroid hormone (PTH), serum C-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen (CTX), and Procollagen 1 Intact N-Terminal (P1NP) in 120 healthy adults selected via multi stage sampling (64 males, 56 females) from 6 subdistricts in Kota Bharu. The mean level of 25(OH)D was 23.50 (${\pm}8.74$) nmol/L. There was a significant difference of the vitamin D level between genders ($26.81{\pm}8.3nmol/L$ vs $19.72{\pm}7.68nmol/L$ in males and females respectively) (p value<0.001). More than 50% of female subjects had 25(OH)D less than 20 nmol/L, while only 20.3% of male subjects had 25(OH)D below 20 nmol/L. Based on the LOESS plot, the bone turnover markers showed a plateauing result, at the 25(OH)D level of 35 nmol/L for CTX and 20 nmol/L for P1NP. Contrastingly, PTH showed a step rise in the 25(OH)D level of 20 nmol/L. Based on the LOESS plot for CTX, P1NP and PTH versus 25(OH)D, level of vitamin D between 20 to 35 nmol/L is recommended to maintain healthy skeleton.

  • Quality evaluation for food and agricultural products have always been one of the most elusive problems associated with the handling , processing and marketing in a food plant production. In order to detect physical foreign materials in food and agricultural products, non-destructive techniques have been developed for many years. Application of X-ray system to detect physical foreign materials in food and agricultural products could be considered to be a high potential method. Especially , it is impossible to detect internal physical foreign materials by visual inspections. In this study, it was tried to be applied for two different X-ray devices. Soft X-ray system with CdTe sensor and X-ray CT scanner were evaluated for advantage of the detection of non-meltallic foreign materials in food and agricultural products . Though the soft X-ray is not a high energy radiation, it is possible to detect small different density in a material. The CdTe sensor has a high resolution for t e soft X-ray energy region. The density characteristics of foods and foreign material were expressed region. The density characteristics of foods and foreign materials were expressed as a soft X-ray energy spectrum. The energy spectrum was analyzed by a personal computer with a multi-channel analyzer. X-ray CT scanner can provide visual image and analyze by three dimensional information inside food and agricultural products. The X-ray CT scanner using as a medical equipment was used to detect a foreign material. The density characteristics of food and foreign materials in food were tried to be detected by the threshold value on the basis of the CT numbers. The soft X-ray absorption characteristics for acrylin plates and distilled water were obtained and could be found the possibility of detecting a small physical foreign materials such as a plastic wrapping film , a stone and grasshopper in food and agricultural products.

  • We proposed a B-RWG LD (Buried-ridge waveguide laser diode) having more merits than a conventional RWG-LD. It's ridge width is controlled easily, it has the advantage of being more planar than the RWG-LD and it is possible to control refractive index with growth layer thickness. Before fabricating the device, we designed the optimal device for single mode, high efficiency and high power operation. From theoretical analysis, we have to control the $d_2, d_3$ layer thicknesses for lateral effective index difference, $\Delta_{nL}$ to be higher than critical value, and simultaneously consider the ridge width for single mode and low threshold current operation. As a result, it is possible to make a single mode LD having the ridge width of $6~9{\mu}m$ if the lateral effective index difference was controlled properly. perly.
