  • The outer race of a constant velocity (CV) joint having six inner ball grooves has traditionally been manufactured by multi-stage warm forging, which includes forward extrusion, upsetting, backward extrusions, necking, ironing and sizing, and machining. In the current study, a multi-stage cold forging process is examined and an assessment for replacing and modifying the conventional multi-stage warm forging is made. The proposed procedure is simplified to the backward extrusion of the conventional process, and the sizing and necking are combined into a single sizing-necking step. Thus, the forging surface of the six ball grooves can be obtained without additional machining. To verify the suitability of the proposed process, a 3-dimensional numerical simulation on each operation was performed. The forging loads were also predicted. In addition, a structural integrity evaluation for the tools was carried out. Based on the results, it is shown that the dimensional requirements of the outer race can be well met.

  • In the rectangular bar multi-stage drawing process, the cross-section dimensional accuracy of the rectangular bar varies depending on the aspect ratio and process conditions. It is very important to predict the dimensional error of the cross-section occurring in the multi-stage drawing process according to the aspect ratio of the rectangular bar and the half die angle of each pass. In this study, a process map for improving the dimensional accuracy according to the aspect ratio was derived in the drawing process of a rectangular bar. FE-simulation of the multi-stage shape drawing process was carried out with four types of rectangular bar. The results of the FE-simulation were trained to the nonlinear relationship between the shape parameters using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and the process maps were derived from them. The optimum half die angles were determined from the process maps on the dimensional accuracy. The validity of the suggested process map for aspect ratios 1.25~2:1 were verified through FE-simulation and experimentation.

  • This study was carried out to establish the extraction method of red ginseng extract without saponin decomposition. Red ginseng was extracted with impulse vacuum system and multi-stage extraction method. Crude saponin content of red ginseng extract (RGE) from impulse vacuum system was 5.4-5.9%, while that of RGE from multi-stage extraction method was 8.2-8.3%. However, HPLC Patterns indicated that saponins of RGE from impulse vacuum system were hardly decomposed, while those of RGE from multi-stage extraction method were decomposed, especially in ginsenoside -Rgl and -Re saponin. Also, the yields of red ginseng by impulse vacuum system were 15 to 20 times higher than that of multi-stage extraction method.

  • In order to develop more economic processes, continuous ethanol fermentation from starchy raw materials in a pilot scale multi-stage CSTR was investigated. Ethanol fermentation could be successfully operated for 30 days with naked barley and 60 days with cassava, respectively. Starchy raw materials used for this study were ground and passed through a 20-mesh sieve for low temperature cooking. Under the optimized conditions, the overall productivity of cassava was $1.27g/{\ell}{\cdot}h$ with an ethanol concentration of 9.51% (v/v), which was higher about 2 times than that obtained from a conventional batch system in industrial scale.

  • A commercial CFD code is applied to analyze the 3-D viscous flow field within vertical multi-stage centrifugal pump including impeller with 6 blades and guide vane with 11 blades and is performed by changing flow rate from 10 to $26m^3/h$ at the constant 3500rpm. The purpose of this 3-D numerical simulation is not only to confirm how much the effect of three kinds of blade inlet breadth (11mm, 11.5mm, 12mm) of impeller has influence on the performance of vertical multi-stage pump but also to make clear the cause about performance difference at the exit side of impeller and guide vane. The vertical multi-stage pump consisit of the impeller, guide, vane and cylinder. The grid of numerical analysis used to the vertical multi-stage pump is 18,000, 45,000, and 100000 cells in case of the impeller, guide vane, cylinder and total grid is 730,000 cells. The characteristics such as total pressure coefficient, total head, shaft horse power, power efficiency at the exit side of impeller and guide vane, discharge coefficient are represented according to flow rage changing.

  • A multi-stage turbo equalization scheme based on the bit-level combining (BLC) is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ). In the proposed multi-stage turbo equalization scheme, the minimum mean-square-error equalizer at each iteration calculates the extrinsic log-likelihood ratios for the transmitted bits in a subpacket and the subpackets are sequentially replaced at each iteration according to the HARQ rounds of received subpackets. Therefore, a number of iterations are executed for different subpackets received at several HARQ rounds, and the transmitted bits received at the previous HARQ rounds as well as the current HARQ round can be estimated from the combined information up to the current HARQ round. In addition, the proposed multi-stage turbo equalization scheme has the same computational complexity as the conventional bit-level combining based turbo equalization scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed multi-stage turbo equalization scheme outperforms the conventional BLC based turbo equalization scheme for MIMO systems with HARQ.

  • In the case of a wire with a very fine diameter during the multi-stage drawing process, the heterogeneity of the deformation in the radial direction tends to develop strongly as the amount of deformation is accumulated. It is known that the heterogeneity of deformation in the radial direction of the wire is closely related to the process parameters during the multi-stage drawing process. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) was used to theoretically examine the effect of friction between the surface of the wire and the drawing die during the multi-stage drawing process of Cu-0.2wt%Mg alloy on the deformation heterogeneity developed in the radial direction of the wire. The distribution of effective strain, radial strain, circumferential strain, and shear strain developed in the radial direction of the wire during the multi-stage drawing process was analyzed while changing the friction coefficient, and the results were analyzed and compared for each path and position. The FEA results revealed that the shear strain developed in the radial direction of the wire during the multi-stage drawing process of Cu-0.2wt%Mg alloy showed the most non-uniform distribution and was also severely affected by the friction coefficient.

  • Magnetic separation technology for small paramagnetic particles has been desired for the volume reduction of contaminated soil from the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident and for the separation of scale and crud from nuclear power plants. However, the magnetic separation for paramagnetic particles requires a superconducting high gradient magnetic separation system applied, hence expanding the bore diameter of the magnets is necessary for mass processing and the initial and running costs would be enormous. The use of high magnetic fields makes safe onsite operation difficult, and there is an industrial need to increase the magnetic separation efficiency for paramagnetic particles in as low a magnetic field as possible. Therefore, we have been developing a magnetic separation system combined with a selection tube, which can separate small paramagnetic particles in a low magnetic field. In the previous technique we developed, a certain range of particle size was classified, and the classified particles were captured by magnetic separation. In this new approach, the fluid control method has been improved in order to the selectively classify particles of various diameters by using a multi-stage selection tube. The soil classification using a multi-stage selection tube was studied by calculation and experiment, and good results were obtained. In this paper, we report the effectiveness of the multi-stage selection tube was examined.

  • In establishing Multi-Stage Machining process inspection procedures, however, where costs of inspection md defective products are often directly measurable, a better method for formulating inspection plans is available. If one of the primary interest of a manufacturing concern is to maximize profits, then optimal inspection plans ought to be selected so as to minimize costs. This paper is aimed to find a methodology of optimal inspection planning in Multi-stage Machining process and to develope a proper algorithm.
