This paper is concentrated on map generalization in digital environment for automated multi-scale map pro-duction using conventional hardcopy maps. Line generalization is urgently required process to prepare small scale digital map database when large scale map databases are available. This paper outlines a new approach to the line generalization when preparing small scale map on the basis of existing large scale distal map. Line generalizations are conducted based on zero-crossing algorithm using six sheets of 115,000 scale YEOSU area which produced by National Geographic Institute. The results are compared to Douglas-Peucker algorithm and manual method. The study gives full details of the data reduction rates and alternatives based on the proposed algorithm.

This paper describes multi-scale based ductile fracture simulation using finite element (FE) damage analysis. The maximum and crack initiation loads of cracked components were predicted using proposed virtual testing method. To apply the local approach criteria for ductile fracture, stress-modified fracture strain model was adopted as the damage criteria with modified calibration technique that only requires tensile and fracture toughness test data. Element-size-dependent critical damage model is also introduced to apply the proposed ductile fracture simulation to large-scale components. The results of the simulation were compared with those of the tests on SA333 Gr. 6 full-scale pipes at $288^{\circ}C$, performed by the Battelle Memorial Institute.

In this paper, we demonstrate a self-imaging technique that can visualize longitudinal interference patterns behind periodically-structured objects, which is often referred to as Talbot carpet. Talbot carpet is of great interest due to ever-decreasing scale of interference features. We demonstrate experimentally that Talbot carpets can be imaged in a single exposure configuration revealing a broad spectrum of multi-scale features. We have performed rigorous diffraction simulations for showing that Talbot carpet print can produce ever-decreasing structures down to limits set by mask feature sizes. This demonstrates that large-scale pattern masks may be used for direct printing of features with substantially smaller scales. This approach is also useful for characterization of image sensors and recording media.
Characteristics of spatial structure of particle clusters are investigated by using the flow field data obtained from three-dimensional numerical simulations. Eulerian/Lagrangian approach with two-way coupling is applied and individual particle-particle collisions are taken into account by using the hard-sphere model. More than 16 million particles are traced in the maximum case. The results show that the cluster is consisted from the multiple-spatial scale components while the low wave-number, hence the large-scale structure, is dominant. Three-dimensional structure reconstructed from the low-pass filtered data enables us to investigate the essential dynamics of particle clusters in detail.
Buckling and post-buckling behaviors of geometrically perfect double-curvature shells made from smart composites have been investigated. The shell has been supposed to be exposed to transverse mechanical loading and magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) coupling. The composite shell has been made of two constituents which are piezoelectric and magnetic ingredients. Thus, the elastic properties might be variable based upon the percentages of the constituents. Incorporating small scale impacts in regard to nonlocal theory leads to the establishment of the governing equations for the double-curvature nanoshell. Such nanoshell stability will be shown to be affected by composite ingredients. More focus has been paid to the effects of small scale factor, electric voltage and magnetic intensity on stability curves of the nanoshell.
Recent work by Ravanbakhsh et al. (2017), Mathuriya et al. (2018) showed that convolutional neural networks (CNN) can be trained to predict cosmological parameters from the visual shape of the large scale structure, i.e. the filaments, clusters and voids of the cosmic density field. These preliminary works used the dark matter density field at redshift zero. We build upon these works by considering realistic mock galaxy catalogues that mimic true observations. We construct light-cones that span the redshift range appropriate for current and near future cosmological surveys such as LSST, EUCLID, WFIRST etc. In summary, we propose a novel multi-image input CNN to track the evolution in the morphology of large scale structures over cosmic time to constrain cosmology and the expansion history of the Universe.
A new analytical buckling solution of a thermo-electro-magneto-elastic (TEME) cylindrical nano-shell made of BiTiO3-CoFe2O4 materials is obtained based on Hamiltonian approach. The Winkler and Pasternak elastic foundations as well as thermo-electro-magneto-mechanical loadings are applied, and two different types of edge conditions are taken into the investigation. According to nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) and surface elasticity theory in conjunction with the Kirchhoff-Love theory, governing equations of the nano-shell are acquired, and the buckling bifurcation condition is obtained by adopting the Navier's method. The detailed parameter study is conducted to investigate the effects of axial and circumferential wave numbers, scale parameters, elastic foundations, edge conditions and thermo-electro-magnetic loadings on the buckling behavior of the nano-shell. The proposed model can be applied in design and analysis of TEME nano components with multi-field coupled behavior, multiple edge conditions and scale effect.
During the long-time service of a bolt, its preload may suffer slight perturbations or significant reductions. It is a dilemma to monitor preload changes at high resolution and full scale. Approaches for bolt preload monitoring with multi-resolution should be developed. In this paper, a simple and effective multi-resolution bolt preload monitoring approach using ultrasonic guided waves (UGW) is proposed. A linear relationship between the time-of-flight (TOF) variation of multi-reflected waves and preload is derived to theoretically reveal the multi-resolution properties of UGW. The variations of TOF before and after the slight preload perturbations are extracted by using a global evaluation method. Experimental results show that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-reflected UGWs is larger than 20 dB. The resolution of the 2nd-reflected UGW is higher than that of the 1st-reflected UGW and lower than that of the 3rd-reflected UGW. The ultimate detectable resolutions of bolt preload (DRBP) of the 1st and 3th-reflected UGWs are 0.9% and 0.5%, respectively. By using the 1st and 3th-reflected guided waves, the bolt looseness with different degrees can be monitored simultaneously.

This paper proposes a semi-automatic image-based approach for 3-dimensional (3D) modeling of buildings along streets. Image-based urban 3D modeling techniques are typically based on the use of aerial and ground-level images. The aerial image of the relevant area is extracted from publically available sources in Google Maps by stitching together different patches of the map. Panoramic images are common for ground-level recording because they have advantages for 3D modeling. A panoramic video recorder is used in the proposed approach for recording sequences of ground-level spherical panoramic images. The proposed approach has two advantages. First, detected camera trajectories are more accurate and stable (compared to methods using multi-view planar images only) due to the use of spherical panoramic images. Second, we extract the texture of a facade of a building from a single panoramic image. Thus, there is no need to deal with color blending problems that typically occur when using overlapping textures.

The present work investigates the effect on the flow-induced vibrations of the lay-up sequence of composite laminated axisymmetric structures, using an hybrid approach based on a wave finite element and a transfer matrix method. The structural vibrations, under deterministic distributed pressure loads, diffuse acoustic field and turbulent boundary layer excitations, are analysed and compared. A multi-scale approach is used for the dynamic analysis of finite structures, using an elementary periodic subsystem. Different flow regimes and shell curvatures are analysed and the computational efficiency is also discussed.
