  • An optimization problem minimizing n given time-weighted performance index for discrete-time linear multi-input systems is investigated for the prespecified closed-loop eigenvalues. Necessary conditions for an optimality of the controller that satisfies the specified closed-loop eigenvalues are derived. A computational algorithm solving the optimal constant feedback gain is presented and a numerical example is given to show the effect of a time-weighted performance index on the transient responses.

  • Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in hybrid and pure electric vehicles. State-of-charge (SOC) estimation is a fundamental issue in vehicle power train control and battery management systems. This study proposes a novel model-based SOC estimation method that applies closed-loop state observer theory and a comprehensive battery model. The state-space model of lithium-ion battery is developed based on a three-order resistor-capacitor equivalent circuit model. The least square algorithm is used to identify model parameters. A multi-state closed-loop state observer is designed to predict the open-circuit voltage (OCV) of a battery based on the battery state-space model. Battery SOC can then be estimated based on the corresponding relationship between battery OCV and SOC. Finally, practical driving tests that use two types of typical driving cycle are performed to verify the proposed SOC estimation method. Test results prove that the proposed estimation method is reasonably accurate and exhibits accuracy in estimating SOC within 2% under different driving cycles.

  • A conventional advanced control algorithm is proposed in this paper for improved temperature regulation of a TV-glass melting furnace. The TV-Glass melting furnace is a typical MIMO(Multi-Input Multi Output) system which is subject to various thermal disturbances. Because of its complexity, a detailed mathematical model of the furnace is hard to establish. To design a temperature control control system of the furnace, major input-output variables are selected first, and simple FOPDT(First Order Plus Dead Time) models are established based on the physical meaning and experimental process data. Based on the FOPDT models, a multi-loop control system composed of cascade and single loops are designed for effective control of the MIMO system. Practical implementation on the 150 ton/day furnace using the DCS(Distributed Control System) showed that the proposed control technique performs better than manual control.

  • A low phase noise phase locked loop (PLL) with negative feedback loop including frequency variation sensing circuit (FVSC) has been proposed. The FVSC senses the frequency variation of voltage controlled oscillator output signal and controls the volume of electric charge in loop filter capacitance. As the output frequency of the phase locked loop increases, the FVSC reduces the loop filter capacitor charge. This causes the loop filter output voltage to decrease, resulting in a phase locked loop output frequency decrease. The added negative feedback loop improves the phase noise characteristics of the proposed phase locked loop. The size of capacitance used in FVSC is much smaller than that of loop filter capacitance resulting in no effect in the size of the proposed PLL. The proposed low phase noise PLL with FVSC is designed with a supply voltage of 1.8V in a 0.18㎛ CMOS process. Simulation results show the jitter of 273fs and the locking time of 1.5㎲.

  • In this paper, the proposed small size PLL works stable with the discrete loop filter which is controlled by voltage controlled oscillator's output signal. A switch controlled loop filter is introduced into the proposed PLL instead of a conventional $2^{nd}$-order loop filter. Those three switches are controlled by the very high frequency output signal of voltage controlled oscillator. The switches are also controlled by UP/DN signals and 'on/off' depending the presence of UP/DN signals. A negative feedback functioned capacitor with a switch does make it possible to integrate the PLL into a single chip. The proposed PLL works stably even though a total of small 180pF capacitor used in the discrete loop filter. The proposed PLL has been designed with a 1.8V supply voltage, 0.18um multi - metal and multi - poly layer CMOS process and proved by Hspice simulation.

  • A Direct Drive Valve(DDV) hydraulic actuation system which is commonly used as an aircraft's control surface driving actuator has multi-loop control structure to ensure its safety operation. However, because of not perfect matching of one self channel characteristics with the others, the servo valve driving current of each channel can be widely different. Therefore, the long-time use of DDV actuator without any correction of these channel current offsets will cause the problem of performance or life expectancy degradation due to unwanted heats in the linear motor. A current equalization loop structure which can minimizes current offsets between channels is introduced and designed. The performance of the current equalization loop is investigated and verified through the analytic and experimental ways.

  • This research analyzed on the future energy society of Korea in 2030 using system thinking approach. Key uncertainty factors determining the future energy society were analyzed in a multi disciplinary view point such as politics, economy, society, ecology and technology. Three causal loop diagrams for the future energy system in Korea and related policy leverages were shown as well. 'Global economic trends', 'change of industrial structure' and 'energy price' were identified as key uncertainty factors determining the Korean energy future. Three causal loop diagrams named as 'rate of energy self-sufficiency and alternative energy production', 'economic activity and energy demand' and 'Excavation of new growth engines' were developed. We integrated those causal loop diagrams into one to understand the entire energy system of the future, proposed three strategic scenarios(optimistic, pessimistic and most likely) and discussed implications and limits of this research.
