  • In this paper, high-speed Hybrid MAC (Medium Access Control layer) implementation suitable for smart grid applications is researched. MB-OFDM (Multi-Band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is considered for high-speed communication method in smart grid application. In this paper, the MAC adopts the distributed network managing method. Also, the MB-OFDM merit of high-speed transfer rate of up to 480Mbps must be supported. Hence, this paper presents an efficient hardware-software integration (co-design) method in order to realize a high- speed transmission, and a realizing method of distribution network. Finally, MAC performance and reliability based on MB-OFDM PHY (PHYsical layer) are confirmed through simulation and emulation.

  • Change detection technology, which discovers the change information on the surface of the earth by comparing and analyzing multi-temporal satellite images, can be usefully applied to the various fields, such as environmental inspection, urban planning, forest policy, updating of geographical information and the military usage. In this paper, we introduce a change detection system that can extract and analyze change elements from high-resolution satellite imagery as well as low- or middle-resolution satellite imagery. The developed system provides not only 7 pixelbased methods that can be used to detect change from low- or middle-resolution satellite images but also a float window concept that can be used in manual change detection from highresolution satellite images. This system enables fast access to the very large image, because it is constituted by OGC grid coverage components. Also new change detection algorithms can be easily added into this system if once they are made into grid coverage components.

  • An interactive mode of grid generation system has been developed for a Navier-Stokes design procedure of axial flow compressors. The present grid generator adopts the multiblock H-grid structure, which simplifies the creation of computational grids about complex turbomachinery geometries and facilitate the manipulation of multiple grid blocks for multirow flow fields. The numerical algorithm adopts the combination of the algebraic and elliptic method to create the internal grids efficiently and quickly. The system consists of four separated modules, which are linked together with a common graphical user interface. The system input is made of the results of the preliminary design. The final grids generated from each module of the system are used as the preprocessor for the performance prediction of the two-or three-dimensional flow simulation inside the blade passage. Application to the blade design of the LP compressor was demonstrated to be very reliable and practical in support of design activities. This customized system are coupled strongly with the design procedure of the turbomachinery cascades using the Navier-Stokes technique.

  • Grid computing is a service that share geographically distributed computing resources through high speed network. In this paper, we propose hybrid scheduling scheme which considers not only meta-scheduling scheme to distribute the job between the nodes of grid computing system but also the job scheduling to distribute the job within the local nodes. According to the number of processors needed and expected execution time, the job with high priority is allocated to job queue while the one with low priority and remote job are allocated to backfill queue. We evaluate the proposing scheme through the various experiments and the results show that the utilization of grid computing system increases and the job slowdown decreases.

  • The spacer grid is one of the main structural components in the fuel assembly, which supports the fuel rods, guides cooling water, and protects the system from an external impact load, such as earthquakes. Therefore, the mechanical and structural properties of the spacer grids must be extensively examined while designing them. In this paper, a numerical method for predicting the buckling strength of spacer grids is presented. Numerical analyses on the buckling behavior of the spacer grids are performed for a various array of sizes of the grids considering that the spacer grid is an assembled structure with thin-walled plates and imposing proper boundary conditions by nonlinear dynamic finite element method using ABAQUS/Explicit. Buckling tests on several numbers of specimens of the spacer grid were also carried out in order to compare the results between the test and the simulation result. The drop test is accomplished by dropping a carriage on the specimen at a pre-determined position. From this test, the specimens are buckled only at the uppermost and the lowermost layer among the multi-cells, which is similar to the local buckling at the weakest point of the grid structure. The simulated results also similarly predicted the local buckling phenomena and were found to give good correspondence with the experimental values for the thin-walled grid structures.

  • The Internet of Things (IoT) envisions smart objects collecting and sharing data at a massive scale via the Internet. One challenging issue is how to disseminate data to relevant data consuming objects efficiently. In such a massive IoT network, Mission critical data dissemination imposes constraints on the message transfer delay between objects. Due to the low power and communication range of IoT objects, data is relayed over multi-hops before arriving at the destination. In this paper, we propose a quorum-based adaptive dissemination algorithm (QADA) for the critical data in the monitoring-based applications of massive IoTs. To design QADA, we first design a new stepped-triangular grid structures (sT-grid) that support data dissemination, then construct a triangular grid overlay in the fog layer on the lower IoT layer and propose the data dissemination algorithm of the publish/subscribe model that adaptively uses triangle grid (T-grid) and sT-grid quorums depending on the mission critical in the overlay constructed to disseminate the critical data, and evaluate its performance as an analytical model.

  • We present a novel memory-efficient parallel ray casting algorithm for unstructured grid volume rendering on multi-core CPUs. Our method is based on the Bunyk ray casting algorithm. To solve the high memory overhead problem of the Bunyk algorithm, we allocate a fixed size local buffer for each thread and the local buffers contain information of recently visited faces. The stored information is used by other rays or replaced by other face's information. To improve the utilization of local buffers, we propose an image-plane based ray grouping algorithm that makes ray groups have high coherency. The ray groups are then distributed to computing threads and each thread processes the given groups independently. We also propose a novel hash function that uses the index of faces as keys for calculating the buffer index each face will use to store the information. To see the benefits of our method, we applied it to three unstructured grid datasets with different sizes and measured the performance. We found that our method requires just 6% of the memory space compared with the Bunyk algorithm for storing face information. Also it shows compatible performance with the Bunyk algorithm even though it uses less memory. In addition, our method achieves up to 22% higher performance for a large-scale unstructured grid dataset with less memory than Bunyk algorithm. These results show the robustness and efficiency of our method and it demonstrates that our method is suitable to volume rendering for a large-scale unstructured grid dataset.

  • Localized atmospheric conditions between multi-reference stations can bring the tropospheric delay irregularity that becomes an error terms affecting positioning accuracy in network RTK environment. Imbalanced network error can affect the network solutions and it can corrupt the entire network solution and degrade the correction accuracy. If an anomaly could be detected before the correction message was generated, it is possible to eliminate the anomalous satellite that can cause degradation of the network solution during the tropospheric delay anomaly. An atmospheric grid that consists of four meteorological stations was used to detect an inhomogeneous weather conditions and tropospheric anomaly applied AWSs (automatic weather stations) meteorological data. The threshold of anomaly detection algorithm was determined based on the statistical weather data of AWSs for 5 years in an atmospheric grid. From the analytic results of anomaly detection algorithm it showed that the proposed algorithm can detect an anomalous satellite with an anomaly flag generation caused tropospheric delay anomaly during localized atmospheric conditions between stations. It was shown that the different precipitation condition between stations is the main factor affecting tropospheric anomalies.

  • In this paper, numerical calculations are performed to analyze the unsteady flow of NACA airfoil sections. In order to ease the flow computation for the fluid region changing in time, improve the quality of solution and simplify the grid generation for the oscillating foil flow, the computational method adopts a moving and deforming mesh with the multi-block grid topology. The multi-block, structured-unstructured hybrid grid is generated using the commercial meshing software Gridgen V15. The MDM (Moving & Deforming Mesh) and the UDF (User Define function) function of FLUENT 6 are adopted for computing turbulent flows of the foil in pitching motion. Computed unsteady lift and drag forces are compared with experimental data. in general, the characteristics of unsteady lift and drag of the experiments are reproduced well in the numerical analysis.

  • A shortcoming of using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for structural analysis via electron diffraction is the relatively large error of the measurements as compared to X-ray diffraction. To reduce these errors, various internal standard methods from earlier studies have been widely used. We developed a new device to facilitate the application of internal standard methods in preparation of TEM grids used for nanopowder analysis. Through the application of a partial mask on the TEM grid, both the internal standards and the research materials can be loaded on the same grid. Through this process, we conducted a TEM analysis that compared synthetic hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanopowder to bone apatite from a bovine femur. We determined that the accuracy of the d-spacing measurements of the HAp and bone powders could be improved to better than 1% after statistical treatments of the experimental data. By applying a quarter mask, we loaded four different nanoparticles on a single TEM grid, with one section designated for the internal standard.
