  • This paper presents a unique study of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) for the maintenance decision making about a real life movable bridge. The mechanical components of movable bridges are maintained on a scheduled basis. However, it is desired to have a condition-based maintenance by taking advantage of SHM. The main objective is to track the operation of a gearbox and a rack-pinion/open gear assembly, which are critical parts of bascule type movable bridges. Maintenance needs that may lead to major damage to these components needs to be identified and diagnosed timely since an early detection of faults may help avoid unexpected bridge closures or costly repairs. The fault prediction of the gearbox and rack-pinion/open gear is carried out using two types of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs): 1) Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Networks (MLP-NNs) and 2) Fuzzy Neural Networks (FNNs). Monitoring data is collected during regular opening and closing of the bridge as well as during artificially induced reversible damage conditions. Several statistical parameters are extracted from the time-domain vibration signals as characteristic features to be fed to the ANNs for constructing the MLP-NNs and FNNs independently. The required training and testing sets are obtained by processing the acceleration data for both damaged and undamaged condition of the aforementioned mechanical components. The performances of the developed ANNs are first evaluated using unseen test sets. Second, the selected networks are used for long-term condition evaluation of the rack-pinion/open gear of the movable bridge. It is shown that the vibration monitoring data with selected statistical parameters and particular network architectures give successful results to predict the undamaged and damaged condition of the bridge. It is also observed that the MLP-NNs performed better than the FNNs in the presented case. The successful results indicate that ANNs are promising tools for maintenance monitoring of movable bridge components and it is also shown that the ANN results can be employed in simple approach for day-to-day operation and maintenance of movable bridges.

  • Selectivity and by-catch are the main features used to define fish catch for fisheries management or to determine fishing gear efficiency. A fish girth distribution analysis was carried out to determine the retention rate of juveniles discarded and to establish common selectivity for a multispecies catch. Total body length, body weight, and girth of juvenile fish retained in the cod-end and cover net separately were collected using an 18-mm mesh cover net during 12 fishing trials with a 41-mm cod-end beam trawl. The by-catch weight ratio in the cod-end was twice that of the by-catch ratio in number. The 50% selectivity of body length and 50% girth of redfin velvet fish were not significantly different between the cod-end and cover net, whereas those of other fish species were significantly different between the cod-end and cover net. The difference in 50% selectivity girth of other fish between the cod-end and cover net was similar between cod-end mesh size and cover net mesh size. Furthermore, the difference in 50% body length selectivity of other fish between the cod-end and cover net was almost double the difference in girth. Girth selectivity in a multispecies catch using towed fishing gear was effectively used to determine fish and net mesh size.

  • Recently, various fault diagnosis studies are being conducted utilizing data from collaborative robots. Existing studies performing fault diagnosis on collaborative robots use static data collected based on the assumed operation of predefined devices. Therefore, the fault diagnosis model has a limitation of increasing dependency on the learned data patterns. Additionally, there is a limitation in that a diagnosis reflecting the characteristics of collaborative robots operating with multiple joints could not be conducted due to experiments using a single motor. This paper proposes an LSTM diagnostic model that can overcome these two limitations. The proposed method selects representative normal patterns using the correlation analysis of vibration and current data in single-axis and multi-axis work environments, and generates residual patterns through differences from the normal representative patterns. An LSTM model that can perform gear wear diagnosis for each axis is created using the generated residual patterns as inputs. This fault diagnosis model can not only reduce the dependence on the model's learning data patterns through representative patterns for each operation, but also diagnose faults occurring during multi-axis operation. Finally, reflecting both internal and external data characteristics, the fault diagnosis performance was improved, showing a high diagnostic performance of 98.57%.

  • In this paper, a new multi-fingered robot hand using ultrasonic motors and its control system are developed. The developed robot hand has four fingers and fifteen articulated joints. The distal joint of each finger is directly driven by ultrasonic motor and all joints except the distal joint has low transmission gear mechanism with the motor. The developed robot hand has several advantages in size compared to a hand using conventional DC motors, and in performance compared to a hand using tendons to drive joints. A VME-bus based hand control system and ultrasonic motor driver are also developed. The performance of the hand is confirmed by using the developed control system in real-time.

  • There are many types of speed reducer for industrial uses. However the cycloid speed reducer is widely used in manipulators based on excellent performance of low backlash, high reduction ratio and compact size. It is essential to use precision speed reducer for accuracy of position controls on robot systems and electric vehicles. The cycloid speed reducer has a eccentric rotating motion and offset to avoid some problem of assembly, so it has a disadvantage for vibration. In this paper, a multi-body dynamic model is developed for a cycloid speed reducer and the dynamic behaviors of the reducer are investigated. The cycloid speed reducer consists of cycloidal plate gears, housing gear, input shaft, output pin and shaft, and eccentric bearings. Using a CAD program, each component of cycloid reducer is modeled based on the offset and eccentric. Multi-body simulations using Recurdyn and test using a rig tester are performed. As a result, the pin reaction force and the amplitude of housing displacement are increased by the larger offset and smaller eccentric value of cycloid reducer.

  • This paper presents case studies on the multi-species fisheries in Korean waters, Multi-species fisheries were divided into two types, that is, multi-species by a single fishery and single species by multiple fisheries. For the case of single species by multiple fisheries, the small yellow croaker stock caught mainly by the Korean pair trawl fishery and the Korean stow net fishery was selected. This approach uses both standardized fishing efforts for the two fisheries by a general linear model and some data for the economic analysis, and then estimates maximum sustainable yield (MSY), maximum economic yield (MEY) and fishing efforts for MSY and MEY, An analysis of interaction aspects between pair trawl and stow net fisheries was carried out to predict the optimal level of fishing effort from the economic point of view, which gives the largest benefits to the two fisheries.

  • Electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) system is the power-assisted steering which operates the hydraulic pump by BLDC motors for assisting the steering force. EHPS consists of BLDC motor, gear pump, oil-hydraulic circuit and steering system. Since EHPS is a convergence system consisting of electricity and electronic, hydraulic and mechanical system, it is difficult to establish the simulation model. In this paper, the mathematical model of EHPS system components were presented, and the simulations of the multi-domain system were performed by using AMESim. The trial and error of development would be reduced by using this simulation results, and it would be helpful for developing high-quality EHPS.

  • In this work, an efficient aircraft landing simulation strategy is proposed to develop an efficient and reliable hard-landing monitoring procedure. Landing stage is the most dangerous moment during operation cycle of aircraft and it may cause structural damage when hard-landing occurs. Therefore, the occurrence of hard-landing should be reported accurately to guarantee the structural integrity of aircraft. In order to accurately determine whether hard-landing occurs or not from given landing conditions, full nonlinear structural dynamic simulation can be performed, but this approach is highly time-consuming. Thus, a more efficient approach for aircraft landing simulation which uses a hierarchical aircraft landing model and an extended inertia relief technique is proposed. The proposed aircraft landing model is composed of a multi-body dynamics model equipped with landing gear and tire models to extract the impact force and inertia force at touch-down and a linear dynamic structural model with an extended inertia relief method to analyze the structural response subject to the prescribed rigid body motion and the forces extracted from the multi-body dynamics model. The numerical examples show the efficiency and practical advantages of the proposed landing model as an essential component of aircraft hard-landing monitoring procedure.

  • As 4.0 industry has been developed, research on a self-driving car technology and related parts of an automobile has been highly investigated recently. Particularly, a TAS(Torque Angle Sensor) module on steering wheel system has been considered as a key technology because of its precise angle, torque detection and high speed signal processing. The environmental assessment is generally required on the TAS module to examine high resolution of angle/torque detection. In the case of existing TAS module, angle detection errors has been occurred by back-lash on main and sub gear in addition to complicated structure caused by gears. In this paper, a structure of the TAS module, which minimizes the numbers of components and angle detection errors on the module compared with the existing TAS module, for vehicle steering system based on a Multi-track Encoder has been proposed. Also, angle detection signal processing board, and key technology of the TAS module were fabricated and evaluated. As a result of the experiments, we confirmed an excellent performance of the fabricated signal processing board for angle detection and an applicability of the fabricated angle detection board on the TAS module of vehicles by the environmental assessment an automobile standard.
