  • In general, crankshafts which are used in internal combustion reciprocating engines are subjects to high torsional vibration. Therefore, a damper is often used to minimize the torsional vibration in reciprocating engines. In this paper, in order to investigate damping performance of viscous damper, the real effective viscosity and complex damping coefficient of silicone oil, and the effective inertia moment of inertia ring are calculated considering the relative motion between damper casing and inertia ring. Based on these results multi-cylinder shaft is modeled into equivalent 2-degree of freedom system and optimum condition is estimated by calculating the amplification factor of viscous damper. Also the test damper was manufactured according to the result of theoretical investigation, the performance and durability was ascertained through experimental examination.

  • This paper presents the simulation of the multi-cylinder 4-stroke cycle spark-ignition engine using a commercial simulation tool, AVL BOOST. Various models were examined to select the appropriate models that would best serve to analyze the main components of the intake and exhaust systems-the plenum chamber, the muffler and the exhaust manifold branch junction. For the plenum chamber and the muffler, the tank model and the pipe model were tested. In order to analyze the exhaust manifold branch junction, a complicated model which reflects the actual shape and involves pressure drops was compared to a simplified one. The results show that both the tank model and the pipe model are applicable with satisfying accuracies for the plenum chamber and the muffler. However, the tank model is more desirable in regards to convenience in modeling and efficiency in calculation. Though both the complicated model and the simplified model show satisfying accuracies for the exhaust manifold branch junction, the simplified model is recommended in regards to convenience in modeling and efficiency in calculation.

  • A real object duplication system (RODS), including three dimensional (3D) scanner and solid freeform fabrication system (SFFS), is a device to make three-dimensional objects directly from the drawing or photo data. A Selective Multi-Laser Sintering (SMLS) process designed in this paper is by which computer images received using 3D scanner are built up from polymer powder on building room of large size using dual laser at industrial type SFF system. Using the process can rapidly produce real object duplication components of industrial type such as cylinder, engine block, chassis of automobile, etc. In this paper, the industrial type SFF system using SMLS process is manufactured and the system is satisfied with high precision and high speed processing technique. To research characteristics of each part for theindustrial type SFF system, a structure and thermal analysis and test of each part is carried out. Also, to achievement of high performance for industrial type SFF system, design and fabrication for the structure, heater, nitrogen supply, laser and control part are carried out.

  • Marine Propulsion shafting system coupled with medium diesel engine forms multi-degree torsional vibration system which consist of many inertia masses such as crank, flywheel, propeller and sometimes gear system is adopted additionally for the purpose of improving propeller's propulsion efficiency or connecting with PTO/PTI. The periodic excitation torques generated by combustion pressure in cylinder and reciprocating masses induce various kinds of vibrations in this shafting system. If the frequency of this excitation torques is equal to the natural frequency of the shafting, the amplitude of the torsional vibration increases steeply and the damage of crankshaft or gears may be occurred by that. This frequency is called critical speed. When making a plan for shafting system, it is important for this frequency to be expected exactly and not to be in commonly used speed. For this reason, this paper introduces the experimental equipment for torsional vibration of marine propulsion shafting system and describes the theoretic and the experimental methods to look for natural frequencies.
