This study examined the political, social, and historical characteristics of the Great Mosque of Algiers, alongside its functional, spatial, and symbolic aspects. Generally, mosques are buildings where religious expression is profoundly intense, making it challenging to apply new types and designs. However, the Great Mosque of Algiers successfully inherits traditional Islamic features while simultaneously embodying modernity at an international level. The results of the multifaceted analysis of the convergence of tradition and modernity in this contemporary architectural work are as follows: First, through research on Islamic architecture, the study identified the functional and spatial characteristics expressed in Islamic buildings. In particular, the study highlighted the features of the Külliye as a multi-use building complex and provided a detailed analysis of symbolic elements such as minarets, domes, ablution facilities, and mihrabs, which are strongly emphasized in mosques where religious features are prominently displayed. Second, the analysis of the Great Mosque of Algiers' architectural plan explored the inte-gration of tradition and modernity. Traditional elements are akin to the identity of the building and contribute to its overall value. Third, by examining the development process of the Great Mosque of Algiers project, the study analyzed the international cooperation required in the modern era, understanding the hybrid nature of this architectural project.
he objective of this study was to investigate home network systems presently applied in multi-housing complexes and resident's usage to improve the utilization of these systems and services as well as maintenance methods. Subjects were 27 housing complexes equipped with home network systems in west Pangyo area. The investigation methods of communal network systems were observed and photographed. Unit systems were investigated through photography, interviews, and observation focusing on the utilization of Wall-Pads by visiting one unit of each housing complex. The results are as follows: (1) Most housing complexes that we investigated were built with high-grade IT infrastructure. Also, remote meter reading, electronic security, vehicle access, and building access systems were established. Wall-Pads with similar functions were installed in 23 housing complexes, excluding private rental housing complexes. (2) Even though people were well aware of the need for common systems within their housing complexes, only 10~20% of Wall-Pad menus were used. (3) Low utilization rates of home network stem from Wall-Pad menus which were user-unfriendly, and a lack of user training for the complex's common system and unit system. Therefore, to promote active use of home network systems, the systems must be diversified in accordance with user characteristics. In addition, the Wall-Pad menus should be reorganized to be user-friendly.

The problem of location for industries and residential quarters has undoubtedly been one of the most important factors to enhance human activities and standard of living. Nonetheless. there seem to be no such theories or approaches as to cope with this problem satisfactorily. As a matter of fact the evaluation of proposed locations so far has stuck to quantitative factors and thus the results are often rejected by the public or individuals. In deciding the location of industrial complex and/or residential quarters, the qualitative factors often play more important role than the quantitative factors. Moreover, it is quite possible for a proposed location to be disapproved for reasons other than quantifiable factors. This work presents an approach to multi-stage decision process of optimum location, particularly for residential quarters. The proposed approach consists of four stages. At the first stage, candidates for the location are searched and checked against musts. After this screening process, the candidates fulfilling the musts are evaluated both quantitatively and qualitatively at the second stage. The third stage is devoted to the integrated evaluation using diffrent weights for the two factors. At the final stage, a location is selected among the candidates evaluated at the earlier stages. This approach has been applied to and tested on a apartment-building project in Ulsan area. Difficulties arising from quantifying factors were encountered as expected. Sometimes decisions could be a matter of taste of the individuals concerned.
Over the past few years, due to the climate change of the earth, the Arctic's sea ice cover is undergoing a historic transformation - thinning, extent reduction in all seasons, and mitigation in the area of multi-year ice in the central Arctic Ocean. These changes allow for increases in maritime access throughout the Arctic Ocean and for potential longer seasons of navigation and possibly transarctic voyage in the summer. These changes also allow more exploration for oil, gas, and other minerals. The Arctic is now an archetype of the complex, multi-dimensional global problems of the twenty-first century. Military security, environmental security, and economic security interact. The potentially enormous economic stakes, sufficient to change the strategic balance among the states of the region, set off competitive pressures for national advantage. Korea, which is heavily dependent upon the sea lane in terms of transportation of its exports and imports, is very much interested in the Arctic sea routes. Korea believes that the Artic sea route, particularly the Northern Sea Route (NSR), could serve as a new useful sea lane, which will enable shorter times between East Asia and Europe, thus resulting in substantial cost saving for ship operators. In addition to shipping, Korea is interested in other Arctic-related maritime industries. Korea, as a leading shipbuilder in the global market, is interested in building ice breakers, drill ships, and other vessels which can contribute to safe operation in Arctic resource development and exploration. Korea, as one of the future stakeholders in Arctic maritime activities, should be ready to foster international cooperation in the region.
Interaction between closely-spaced buildings subject to earthquake induced strong ground motions, termed in the literature as "seismic pounding", occurs commonly during major seismic events in contemporary congested urban environments. Seismic pounding is not taken into account by current codes of practice and is rarely considered in practice at the design stage of new buildings constructed "in contact" with existing ones. Thus far, limited research work has been devoted to quantify the influence of slab-to-slab pounding on the inelastic seismic demands at critical locations of structural members in adjacent structures that are not aligned in series. In this respect, this paper considers a typical case study of a "new" reinforced concrete (R/C) EC8-compliant, torsionally sensitive, 7-story corner building constructed within a block, in bi-lateral contact with two existing R/C 5-story structures with same height floors. A non-linear local plasticity numerical model is developed and a series of non-linear time-history analyses is undertaken considering the corner building "in isolation" from the existing ones (no-pounding case), and in combination with the existing ones (pounding case). Numerical results are reported in terms of averages of ratios of peak inelastic rotation demands at all structural elements (beams, columns, shear walls) at each storey. It is shown that seismic pounding reduces on average the inelastic demands of the structural members at the lower floors of the 7-story building. However, the discrepancy in structural response of the entire block due to torsion-induced, bi-directionally seismic pounding is substantial as a result of the complex nonlinear dynamics of the coupled building block system.
Developing a modern Han-style design and providing support for the commercialization development model in recent years has been propelled by the Han-style Support Strategies of the central government in conjunction with Han-style revitalization related projects that reflect the efforts of local governments. Han-style revitalization, the rekindling and revaluing of human behavior and interest in local governments following the social and cultural changes of the past decades, has emerged as an increasingly traditional area of concern in Han-style design. The purpose of the study was to provide a method which clarifies the design rules of the Han-style bathroom based on an evaluation of sensibilities and a rough set theory, and to give the components meaning and to systematize the method. Essentially, the Han-style bathroom design evaluation is a complex multi-criteria decision making process that seeks to improve the effectiveness and objectively of the Han-style bathroom design. Han-style bathroom design can be displayed in a graphical representation in response to input from the evaluation concerning sensibilities. Because the graphical representation is composed of 3D data, it is possible to display the Han-style bathroom design form in any desired perspective and also to perform shading and other operations. With the proposed method, it is possible to obtain a combination of several contributory components which can be referred to as Reducts, Covering Index and Column Score. Han-Style/Non Han-Style Bathroom Designs were identified by the combination of several components.
The modern ports have become multi-functionalized and network-centralized over time. Recently the development of industry in the land behind the port area has become very important for port itself. Furthermore, the port functions as a finance center and an integrated function of the main bank of the world. It will be necessary for Inchon port to pursue the policy for building itself as a hub center for logistics integration and building network in the region of Northern-East Asia and Seoul Capital City area in order for Inchon port to support and develop various industries through utilizing each aspect of the industrial complex in these areas. By doing this, it will act as a policy for strengthening competiveness for Inchon port. The sharp increase of cargo movement from rapidly developing Industries in China will become a good opportunity for strengthening the competitiveness of Inchon port. However, considering the characteristics of the ports competitiveness, this policy must quickly overcome the difficulties of Inchon port.

In general, the response spectrum analysis method (R.S.A) is widely used for seismic analysis of building structure. But, it is not common to apply R.S.A for the analysis of structural vibration caused by dynamic loads of equipments, machines and moving leads, etc. The time history analysis method(T.H.A) for the vibration analysis, compared with R.S.A, is very complex, difficult and time consuming. So the application of R.S.A, that is convenient to calculate maximum responses for structural vibration, is proposed in this study. At first, the procedure for the application of the R.S.A to calculate of the maximum vibration response induced by dynamic load applied on the single point is described. And then, the process, which can save the time and the memory for calculation of the maximum vibration response induced by dynamic loads on the multi-point is proposed, and the maximum structural response caused by moving loads are obtained. Lastly, the accuracy of the proposed method is verified by comparing the results of R.S.A to T.H.A for some example models.

Many pedestrian simulation models for micro-scale spaces as building indoor areas have been proposed for the last decade and two models - social force model and floor field model - are getting attention. Among these, CA-based floor field model is viewed more favourable for computer simulations than computationally complex social force model. However, Kirchner's floor field model has limitations in capturing the differences in dynamic values of different agents and this study proposes an enhanced algorithm. This study improved the floor field model in order for an agent to be able to exclude the influences of its own dynamic values by changing the data structure, and, also modified the initial dynamic value problem in order to fit more realistic environment. In the simulations, real 3D building data stored in a spatial DBMS were used considering future integration with indoor localization sensors and real time applications.
