  • Long and slender body with or without flexible supports under severe operating condition can be unstabilized even by the small cross flow. Turbulent flow mixer, which actually increases thermal-hydraulic performance of the nuclear fuel by boosting turbulence, disturbs the flow field around the fuel rod and affects dynamic behavior of the nuclear fuel rods. Few studies on this problem can be found in the literature because these effects depend on the specific natures of the support and the design of the system. This work shows how the dynamics of a multi-span fuel rod can be affected by the turbulent flow, which is discretely activated by a flow mixer. By solving a state-space form of the eigenvalue equation for a multi-span fuel rod system, the critical velocity at which a fuel rod becomes unstable was established. Based on the simulation results, we evaluated how stability of a multi-spanned nuclear fuel rod with mixing vanes can be affected by the coolant flow in an operating reactor core.

  • Free Standing Hybrid Riser (FSHR) is comprised of vertical steel risers and Flexible Jumpers (FJ). They are jointly connected to a submerged Buoyancy Can (BC). There are several factors that have influence on the behavior of FSHR such as the span distance between an offshore platform and a foundation, BC up-lift force, BC submerged location and FJ length. An optimization method through a parametric study is presented. Firstly, descriptions for the overall arrangement and characteristics of FSHR are introduced. Secondly, a flowchart for optimization of FSHR is suggested. Following that, it is described how to select reasonable ranges for a parametric study and determine each of optimal configuration options. Lastly, numerical analysis based on this procedure is performed through a case study. In conclusion, the relation among those parameters is analyzed and non-dimensional parametric ranges on optimal arrangements are suggested. Additionally, strength analysis is performed with variation in the configuration.

  • Computer simulation technique has been applied on the various engineering fields to reduce cost and development period. On this paper, we introduce a crane analysis program. Using this program, we can predict reaction force of each part or supporting force of truck crane on a personal computer system with out exclusive knowledge of multi-body dynamics. In order to consider the effect of boom flexibility according to each working condition, flexible dynamic theory is applied to the program. Actual crane model is analyzed on special work condition using this program and the results are compared with those of rigid boom model.

  • In this paper, the modeling and analysis of dynamic characteristics has been carried out for friction clutches and brakes in an automatic transmission. From the operating oil pressure generated by the valve-body, time delay by check valve and the movement of piston has been examined. Also torque capacity and torque transferred at the clutch is studied. Heat capacity and temperature distribution at the reaction plate of clutch are codeled by time-dependent, nonhomogeneous partial differential equation, and brake torque, brake time, and the amount of heat generated are investigated. It is found that the time delay at the check valve is very short but dominant at the spool.

  • When we analyze dynamics of a multi body system, a compliance of joints must be considered. If the virtual model for CAE(computer adied engineering) analysis is not considered compliance, the result of CAE analysis will be very different from the actual result. Especially in a biped walking robot, a compliance can be caused in joints of a walking robot, and the robot may lose walking stability. This paper proposes a compliance modeling method and the effectiveness of the compliance model is verified through experiments.

  • A nano-imprinting stage has been widely used in various fields of nano-technology. In this study, A 4-axis nano-imprinting stage is modeled with using the 3D-CAD Tool. Structural components such as an upper-plate, bearings and cross-roller-guides are modeled with finite elements to analyze flexibility effect during the precision stage motion. In addition, Dynamic analysis is executed to reproduce actual motion of 4-axis nano imprinting stage.

  • This article presents the reduction of vibration generated by an automobile fuel pump. In order to analysis the vibration of the fuel pump, a simplified dynamic model is established, which is composed of a rigid rotor and a equivalent springs. The equivalent stiffnesses of the upper and lower assemblies are evaluated by the comparison of modal testing results and the finite element analysis. the stiffness for the oil film of the journal bearing is extracted by using Reynold's equation. In addition, the time responses for the vibration of the fuel pump are computed by using a commercial multi-body dynamics software, RecurDyn. Based on these results, some design suggestions are proposed to reduce the vibration of an automobile fuel pump.

If the virtual model for CAE(computer aided engineering) analysis does not consider compliance, the result of CAE analysis can be very different from the actual experimental result. Especially in a biped walking robot, the robot may lose walking stability due to the compliance in joints of a walking robot. This paper proposed a method applying a compliance of joints in the biped walking robot to a virtual model. Also, through the 3-D displacement measurement using a laser tracker, it was demonstrated that the virtual model considering the joint compliance could effectively simulate the nonlinear motion of the real model.

  • Using the orthogonal arrays and the occupant analysis software based on the multi-body dynamics , two interactive design algorithms are proposed to improve the initial design of the occupant protection systems. Algorithm 1 sequentially moves the narrow design space within the upper and the lower design limit. Algorithm 2 sequentially reduces the relatively wide design space. Each design algorithm is composed of two levels . The first level is to improve the characteristics of the crash performance considering the noise factors. In order to obtain the robust design, the second level reduces the variations the noise factors. In order to obtain the robust design, the second level reduces the variations due to the tolerance of the design variable. To utilize the algorithm 1, HIC(Head Injury Criterion) , 3 msec criterion value of the chest acceleration and the femur load decreased by 27.4%, 10.4% and 55.8%, respectively. To utilizer the algorithm 2 , the results decreased by 38.0%, 10.5% and 3.0% , respectively.

  • Tires, bushings and stabilizers are the most difficult elements in vehicle modeling for dynamic analyses. Many studies were performed for tire modeling and the primitive data of bushing elements can be obtained from the suspension designer, but there are few things for stabilizer. This paper presents simulation results for the 3 kinds of stabilizer model with the multi-body dynamic analysis program ADAMS. Each simulation result was compared with the vehicle test result, and the stabilizer model was proposed to analyze the vehicle behaviors precisely.
