Application of Multi-Antenna GPS Technology in Monitoring Stability of Slopes

  • There are a great number of man-made and natural slopes in many parts of the world including Hong Kong and Mainland China. For example, there are over 40,000 slopes in Hong Kong registered by the Hong Kong Government. Landslides due to slope failures can often cause catastrophes that involve the loss of both lives and important facilities. GPS has been demonstrated to have great potentials for use in monitoring slope stability and landslides. However, the high hardware cost of GPS has limited the wide spread use of GPS for such applications. The multi-antenna GPS technology initiated by the research group and our collaborators has significantly reduced the cost of GPS and provided a solution to a number of associated problems such as data management and power supply. This paper discusses practical applications of multi-antenna GPS technology in slope monitoring, including system design, setting up, data transmission and management, and data quality analysis and control. Some slope monitoring examples are given to illustrate the points discussed.

3중 대역 휴대폰 단말기용 다중 전류 분포 폴디드 모노폴 안테나 (Multi-Current Distributed Folded Monopole Antenna for Triple Band Mobile Phone Handset)

  • 본 논문에서는 폴드형 GSM/DCS/USPCS 서비스용 휴대폰 단말기에 적용되는 3중 대역 폴디드 모노폴 안테나를 설계 제작한다. 안테나는 변형된 미앤더 구조이며, 접힌 형상을 갖도록 설계함으로써 GSM 주파수 대역에서는 길이를 늘리는 역할을 하고, DCS/USPCS 주파수 대역에서는 같은 방향으로 전류가 형성될 수 있도록 한다. 같은 방향의 다중 전류는 방사 저항과 이득을 동시에 높게 해 줌으로써 내장형 안테나로 성능 구현이 어려운 휴대폰에 적용될 수 있다. 설계된 안테나를 프레스 공법으로 제작하여 휴대폰에 적용한 결과 GSM/DCS/USPCS의 3중 대역에서 폴드 닫힘 상태에서 VSWR 3:1, 열림 상태에서 2:1 이내 특성을 만족하고 있으며, 최대 이득은 GSM 밴드에서 -0.02 dBi, DCS 밴드에서 +0.2 dBi, USPCS 밴드에서 +0.78 dBi을 가지고 전방향성 특성의 H면 방사 특성을 보인다.

An LMS-Based Beamforming Algorithm for Antenna Array Applied to an MC-CDMA System

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive Beamforming Algorithm, called MC-LMS, for adaptive antenna applied to an MC-CDMA system. New method for updating the weight vector based on the MSE criterion is derived. Computer simulations show that MC-LMS algorithm is capable of rejecting co-channel interference that affects the MC-CDMA system. Thus, the BER performance of the MC-CDMA system is much higher than that of the MC-CDMA system without using adaptive antenna and that of the DS-CDMA system with adaptive antenna in multi-path Rayleigh fading channel.

  • In this paper, an adaptive beamforming algorithm, based on the Minimum Mean Squared Error (MMSE) criterion, is devised fer adaptive antenna applied to an MC-CDMA system. A new method for updating the weight vector is derived. Computer simulations show that proposed algorithm is capable of rejecting co-channel interference that affects the MC-CDMA system. Thus, the BER performance of the MC-CDMA system is improved compared with that of the MC-CDMA system without using adaptive antenna and that of the DS-CDMA system with adaptive antenna in multi-path Ricean fading channel.

기내 엔터테인먼트 통신 시스템을 위한 밀리미터파 대역의 여파기 결합 안테나 (A Filtering Antenna for Wireless In-Flight Entertainment Communication System at Millimeter-Wave Band)

  • 본 논문에서는 밀리미터파대역에서 동작하는 H면 여파기 결합 안테나를 제안하였다. 여파기 결합 안테나는 여파기가 안테나에 삽입된 형태이며 안테나의 반사손실을 줄이고 지향성을 높이기 위하여 다층의 유전체 렌즈가 결합되었다. 도파관 형태의 여파기와 안테나는 가상의 도체벽을 형성하는 via의 배열을 PCB기판에 구현함으로서 크기의 감소를 꾀하였으며 안테나와 여파기를 일반적인 도파관에서 설계한 후 PCB 기판에 축소하여 구현한 후 결합을 시도하였다. 유전체 렌즈의 두께를 조절하기위해 단층 및 다층의 유전체 기판을 사용하였으며 그 결과로 41.5 GHz의 중심주파수에서 8, 13.5 dBi의 시뮬레이션 이득을 각각 얻을 수 있었다.

Optimal Energy-Efficient Power Allocation and Outage Performance Analysis for Cognitive Multi-Antenna Relay Network Using Physical-Layer Network Coding

  • In this paper, we investigate power allocation scheme and outage performance for a physical-layer network coding (PNC) relay based secondary user (SU) communication in cognitive multi-antenna relay networks (CMRNs), in which two secondary transceivers exchange their information via a multi-antenna relay using PNC protocol. We propose an optimal energy-efficient power allocation (OE-PA) scheme to minimize total energy consumption per bit under the sum rate constraint and interference power threshold (IPT) constraints. A closed-form solution for optimal allocation of transmit power among the SU nodes, as well as the outage probability of the cognitive relay system, are then derived analytically and confirmed by numerical results. Numerical simulations demonstrate the PNC protocol has superiority in energy efficiency performance over conventional direct transmission protocol and Four-Time-Slot (4TS) Decode-and-Forward (DF) relay protocol, and the proposed system has the optimal outage performance when the relay is located at the center of two secondary transceivers.

Secrecy Performance of Multi-Antenna Satellite-Terrestrial Relay Networks with Jamming in the Presence of Spatial Eavesdroppers

  • This work investigates the physical layer secrecy of a multi-antenna hybrid satellite-terrestrial relay networks (HSTRN) with jamming, in which a satellite aims to make communication with a destination user by means of a relay, along with spatially random eavesdroppers. In order to weaken the signals of eavesdroppers, the conventional relay can also generate intentional interference, besides forwarding the received signal. Shadowed-Rician fading is adopted in satellite link, while Rayleigh fading is adopted in terrestrial link, eavesdropper link and jamming link. The analytical and asymptotic formulas for the system secrecy outage probability (SOP) are characterized. Practical insights on the diversity order of the network are revealed according to the asymptotic behavior of SOP at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Then, analysis of the system throughput is examined to assess the secrecy performance. In the end, numerical simulation results are presented to validate the theoretical analysis and point out: (1) The secrecy performance of the considered network is affected by the channel fading scenario, the system configuration; (2) Decrease of the relay coverage airspace can provide better SOP performance; (3) Jamming from the relay can improve secrecy performance without additional network resources.

다중 냉각유로가 적용된 수랭식 군사용 대면적 안테나의 열성능 예측 기술 (Development of Thermal Performance Prediction for Large Planar Military Antenna with Multi-Cooling Channels)

  • Large planar military antenna boasts a range of electrical components, including TRA(Transmit-Receive Assembly), signal processors, etc. which engage in computations and calculations. These processes generate a significant amount of heat, leading to unforeseen consequences for the equipment. To mitigate these adverse effects, it's imperative to implement a cooling system that can effectively reduce heat-related issues. Given the antenna's intricate nature and the multitude of components it houses, a two-step estimation process is necessary. The first step involves a comprehensive model calculation to determine the total flow characteristics, while the second step entails a thermal analysis of individual TRA set. In this study, we depicted an antenna set using simplified 3D models of its components, considering their material and thermal properties. The sequential analysis process facilitated the calculation of branched flow rates, providing insights into the individual TRA. This approach also allowed us to design a cooling system for the TRA set, assessing its thermal stability in high-temperature environments. To ensure the optimal performance of TRA, breaking down the analysis into stages based on the cooling system's structure can assist operators in predicting numerical results more effectively.

A Low-Profile Broadband Array Antenna for Home Repeater Applications

  • This paper reports on the proposed design of a low profile broadband array antenna for home repeater applications. The proposed antenna consists of $1{\times}4$ patch elements and two ground planes, one of which is slitted. By using the gap feeding method, the impedance matching of the antenna is improved by a multi-resonance phenomenon. The proposed antenna provides a wide -10 dB reflection coefficient bandwidth simultaneously covering the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM-1800), Personal Communications Service (PCS), and the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) bands (1.67-2.32 GHz). In order to reduce the mutual coupling between adjacent patch elements, slits are embedded in the ground plane. An isolation level of -20 dB is realized over the entire operating frequency band.

자세 결정용 GPS 수신기와 DR을 이용한 통합 시스템 (An attitude determination GPS Receiver Integrated with Dead Reckoning Sensors)

  • In the GPS/DR integrated system, the GPS position(or velocity) is used to compensate the DR output and to calibrate errors of the DR sensor. This synergistic relationship ensures that the calibrated DR accuracy can be maintained even when the GPS signal is blocked. Because of the observability problem, however, the DR sensors are not sufficiently calibrated when the vehicle speed is low. This problem can be solved if we use a multi-antenna GPS receiver for attitude determination instead of conventional one. This paper designs a two-antenna GP receiver integrated with DR sensors. The proposed integration system has three remarkable features. First, the DR sensor can be calibrated regardless of the vehicle speed with the aid of two-antenna GPS receiver. Secondly, the search space of integer ambiguities in GPS carrier-phase measurements is reduced to a part of the surface of the sphere using DR heading. Thirdly, the detection resolution of cycle-slips in GPS carrier-phase measurements is improved with the aid of DR heading. From the experimental result, it is shown that the search space is drastically reduced to about 3/20 of the non-aided case and the cycle-slips of 1 or half cycle can be detected.
