  • The characteristics of center-driver jet pump which have multi-nozzle were studied in this research. Jet nozzles are connected outside of the bend rather than inserted in the bend in order to transport solid materials or fish without any harm. Jet pumps having one nozzle, two nozzles, four nozzles, and sixteen nozzles were tested in this study. The efficiencies and performances of jet pumps were studied for several nozzles shape, for three different mixing chamber shapes, for two suction area shapes. All the efficiency curves for these cases are presented in this paper.

  • In orchard or crop-growing environments, pesticides are sprayed using various nozzles to prevent pests and improve productivity. Nozzles currently in use are restricted for use in multi-purpose environments, thus, it is necessary to develop new nozzles. In this study, new two-phase nozzles are proposed to improve the performance of the nozzle (flow rate, spray angle, spray particle size). The performance of the two-phase nozzles are predicted through the CFD analysis and the performance of the nozzles is compared with the experiment. The experimental results showed that the proposed two-phase nozzles are available at relatively low operating pressure condition and are capable of extensive spray particle size control. Thus, the proposed nozzles are expected to be available in various orchard environments.

  • Experimental and theoretical researches about jet pump have been carried out by many researchers. Jet pump can be used for the transportation of solid materials, farm produce, and fishes. It is the purpose of this paper to seek optimal multi nozzle shape of the annular jet pump. Experiments were done for several jet nozzle areas, jet nozzle arrays and jet nozzle lengths. Water was used for both the primary fluid and secondary fluid. The efficiency curves for the annular jet pump having multi nozzles are presented in this paper.

  • The stability of turbulent nonpremixed interacting flames is investigated in terms of nozzle configuration shapes which depend on the existence of the center nozzles. Six nozzle arrangements which are cross 4, 5, 8, 9, square 8 and circular 8 nozzles are used for the experiment. Those are arranged to see the effect of the center nozzle out of multi-nozzle. There are many parameters that affect flame stability in multi-nozzle flame such as nozzle separation distance, fuel flowrates and nozzle configuration, but the most important factor is the existence of nozzles in the center area from the nozzle arrangement. As the number of nozzle in the area is reduced, more air can be entrained into the center of flame base and then tag flame is formed. In the case of circular 8 nozzles, blowout flowrates are above 5.4 times compared with that of single equivalent area nozzle.

  • 3D printing techniques can be used in various application fields and many researches have been reported. FDM (Fused Deposition modeling) can make multi-material or multi-color models with the simultaneous use of two or more filaments. In a dual-nozzle FDM printers, while the active nozzle is working, the remaining nozzle will be idle. The remaining molten resins inside an idle nozzle can ooze out unwantedly. The spill over from the resting nozzle produces unwanted remaining on the fabricated product. In this research, we suggest a method for optimizing building position of a model to minimize the unwanted spill-over that could possibly contaminate the final product. The method is based on minimizing the two intersection volumes. The first intersection volume is obtained by intersecting the volume defined by the first material and the Minkowski sum between the volume of the first material and the vector obtained by subtracting the center point of the first nozzle from the center point of the second nozzle. The second intersection volume can be obtained by reversing the role of the first and second volumes and nozzles. Some results obtained from the implementation using the Parasolid (Siemens) geometric modeling kernel is presented.

  • Inkjet printhead may have a lot of nozzles to increase productivity as a manufacturing tool. So, the uniformity of jetting performance among a lot of nozzles has been one of the key issues in inkjet technology In this study, we investigated the cross-talk effect which should be reduced for uniform jetting performance among a lot of nozzles. Due to the cross-talk, the jetting performance of a nozzle can be affected when neighboring nozzles are firing. For experimental study, we used commercial inkjet head SE-128 from Dimatix. To understand the cross-talk effect of SE-128 head, we measured the change in jetting speed of a nozzle when neighboring nozzles are jetting. The measured jetting speed was compared to the case of one nozzle jetting. Also, we used laser vibrometer to measure change in pressure wave due to cross-talk. As a result of the cross-talk, the jetting speed can become faster or sometimes slower depending on firing nozzle location. If the all nozzle are jetting, the jetting speed of a nozzle became slower because the pressure wave for jetting is reduced.

  • Multi-dimensional two-phase phenomena occur in many industrial applications, particularly in a nuclear reactor during steady operation or a transient period. Appropriate modeling of complicated behavior induced by a multi-dimensional flow is important for the reactor safety analysis results. SPACE, a safety analysis code for thermal hydraulic systems which is currently being developed, was designed to have the capacity of multi-dimensional two-phase thermo-dynamic phenomena induced in the various phases of a nuclear system. To validate the performance of SPACE, a two-dimensional two-phase flow test was performed with slab geometry of the test section having a scale of $1.43m{\times}1.43m{\times}0.11m$. The test section has three inlet and three outlet nozzles on the bottom and top gap walls, respectively, and two outlet nozzles installed directly on the surface of the slab. Various kinds of two-dimensional air/water flows were simulated by selecting combinations of the inlet and outlet nozzles. In this study, two-dimensional two-phase void fraction profiles were quantified by measuring the local gap impedance at 225 points. The flow conditions cover various flow regimes by controlling the flow rate at the inlet boundary. For each selected inlet and outlet nozzle combination, the water flow rate ranged from 2 to 20 kg/s, and the air flow rate ranged from 2.0 to 20 g/s, which corresponds to 0.4 to 4 m/s and 0.2 to 2.3 m/s of the superficial liquid and gas velocities based on the inlet port area, respectively.

  • This paper presents both experimental and numerical studies regarding nozzles used for the SI engine application, particularly for the intake-port fuel injection type. The atomization mechanism of the multi-hole plate nozzle was investigated experimentally. It was found that the nozzle design added turbulence into the liquid-film jet and the jet disintegrated rapidly. Based on the results, various plate types for the nozzle were developed and tested; six hole nozzle for liquid jet interaction, plate-type nozzle with flat duct channel, and the simpler structured nozzle. The spray characteristics of the prototype nozzles were examined experimentally while the internal flow of the nozzle was investigated computationally. It was shown that turbulent liquid-film was injected and atomization quality was improved by controlling the internal flow condition of the plate-type nozzle.

  • Spray characteristics of diesel fuel injection is one of the most important factors in diesel combustion and pollutant emissions especially in HSDI (High Speed Direct Injection) diesel engines where the interval between the onset of combustion and the evaporation of atomized fuel is relatively short, An investigation into various spray characteristics from different holes of VCO(Valve Covered Orifice) nozzles was performed and its results were compared to standard sac nozzle. The global characteristics of spray, including spray angle, spray tip penetration, and spray pattern were measured from the spray images which were frozen by an instantaneous photography with a spark light source. For better understanding of spray behavior, SMD of the fuel sprays from multi hole nozzles were measured with back light imaging while the sprays from the other holes are covered by a purpose-built nozzle cap. The investigation manifestly reveals the different spray patterns at the beginning of injection produced by VCO nozzles can be identified as three distinct types with their own macroscopic and microscopic characteristics, while macroscopic non-uniformity disappears at 0.9∼1.0ms from the start of injection.
