Identifying the Appropriate Position on the Ground Plane for MIMO Antennas Using Characteristic Mode Analysis

  • In this paper, a method for identifying the appropriate position on the ground plane for antennas is proposed based on the current correlation coefficient ($C^3$). This method explains that the mutual coupling between antennas when locating several antennas on the same ground plane is necessary. Given the current distribution on the ground plane induced by each antenna, easily estimating the coupling between antennas is possible. This paper also demonstrates that the proposed method can be used in the design of a multi-input multi-output system. The measured data are in good agreement with the simulation results.

  • One of the most advanced classes of techniques for ground response analysis is based on the use of Transfer Functions. They represent the ratio of Fourier spectrum of amplitude motion at the free surface to the corresponding spectrum of the bedrock motion and they are applied in frequency domain usually by FFT method. However, Fourier spectrum only shows the dominant frequency in each time step and is unable to represent all frequency contents in every time step and this drawback leads to inaccurate results. In this research, this process is optimized by decomposing the input motion into different frequency sub-bands using Wavelet Multi-level Decomposition. Each component is then processed with transfer Function relating to the corresponding component frequency. Taking inverse FFT from all components, the ground motion can be recovered by summing up the results. The nonlinear behavior is approximated using an iterative procedure with nonlinear soil properties. The results of this procedure show better accuracy with respect to field observations than does the Conventional method. The proposed method can also be applied to other engineering disciplines with similar procedure.

연약지반에 건설된 단일형 현장타설말뚝 교량의 근단층지반운동에 대한 내진성능 (Seismic Performance of Bridge with Pile Bent Structures in Soft Ground against Near-Fault Ground Motions)

  • 근단층 지역에 위치한 교량은 근단층지반운동에 대한 내진안전성을 확보하는 것이 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 연약지반이 두껍고 다양한 지층으로 구성된 지역에 건설되는 단일형 현장타설말뚝 교량의 지진거동특성과 내진안전성을 분석하였다. 근단층지반운동을 생성하고 지반해석을 수행하여 각 지층에서의 지반가속도이력을 산정하였다. 이 가속도이력을 이용하여 각 지층의 지반을 등가스프링으로 모델화하고, 각 지층에서의 가속도시간이력을 입력지반운동으로 하는 다지점 가진 지진해석을 수행하였다. 근단층지반운동의 특성으로 인하여 교량은 탄성영역 내에서 거동하였지만 최대모멘트의 발생 위치 등이 설계지반운동을 고려할 때와는 상이한 특성을 보였다.

  • This paper describes the multi-heat pumps applied in an ground source heat pump system for an actual building. The performance of a ground source multi-heat pump installed in the field was investigated at heating season. The average COP of the systems with single U-tube and double tube type GLHXs were 4.8 and 5.0, respectively. It is needed to investigate the long term performance of double tube type GLHX, because the reduction of inlet temperature of OD HX for this GLHX was larger than it for U-tube GLHX.

  • This paper proposes an optimum curve driving method for adeep-seabed mining robot(MineRo) in deep-sea soft ground. MineRo was designed as afour-row tracked vehicle. A study on the turning methods for the four-row tracked vehicle was conducted using three case by changing the velocity profile of each track. The configuration of the four-row tracked vehicle and soft ground equation are introduced, along with the dynamics analysis models of MineRo and soft ground, which were constructed using the commercial software DAFUL. Because the purpose of this study was to investigate a driving method on soft ground, the marine environment of the deep sea was not considered.

PBD가 설치된 연약지반의 원심모형실험에 관한 연구 (A Study on Centrifuge Model Experiments of Soft Soil Ground Installed with PBD)

  • This study is the results of experimental and numerical study on the consolidational behavior of multi-layered soft soil ground installed with plastic board drains (PBD). Centrifuge model tests with a marine clay sampled from field were performed to investigate the consolidational behavior of multi-layered ground where a dredged soil was placed on the soft clay ground and PBDs were installed. Test results were compared with those of numerical analyses, using the 2-D equivalent model previously proposed. From test results, it was found that the amount of consolidation settlement occurred in the original ground due to embankment surcharge loads was in the range of 38% of total settlement in the whole ground. From the results of cone penetration tests executed after finishing the centrifuge model tests, the cone resistance was found to increase with depth. The measured water contents inbetween PBDs were in the ranges of 38~50% and their values tended to increase with increasing the distance between PBDs.

  • 최근 들어 경제적이고 친환경적인 에너지 활용을 위하여 지열에너지 필요성이 증대되고 있다. 지반의 열전도도(ground thermal conductivity)와 보어홀 열저항(borehole thermal resistance)은 지열 히트펌프 시스템(geothermal heat pump system)의 설계 과정에서 매우 중요한 변수이다. 본 논문에서는 일반 수직밀폐형에서의 U, W 타입의 지중 열교환기(ground heat exchanger)를 매립지 지반에 설치한 후 100시간 연속 운전 조건으로 현장 열성능 실험(thermal performance test)을 수행하였다. 또한 보어홀 열저항 산정 모델들을 이용하여 열효율을 산정한 후 이를 실험값과 비교하였다. 실험 결과 기존에 주로 적용되고 있는 shape factor(SF) 모델보다 multi-pole과 equivalent diameter(EQD) 모델이 계측값과 잘 일치하였다.

  • In the present study, in order to apply a cyclic viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model to multi-layered ground conditions during large earthquake, the numerical simulations of the 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu Earthquake at Port Island, Kobe, Japan, were performed by the seismic respons analysis. From the seismic response analysis, it was verified that a cyclic viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model can give a good description of the damping characteristics of clay accurately during large event which induces plastic deformation in large strain range.

Study of ground vibration induced by high-speed trains moving on multi-span bridges

  • This paper investigates the ground vibration induced by high-speed trains moving on multi-span continuous bridges. The dynamic impact factor of multi-span continuous bridges under trainloads was first determined in the parametric study, which shows that the dynamic impact factor will be large when the first bridge vertical natural frequency is equal to the trainload dominant frequencies, nV/D, where n is a positive integer, V is the train speed, and D is the train carriage interval. In addition, more continuous spans will produce smaller dynamic impact factors at this resonance condition. Based on the results of three-dimensional finite element analyses using the soil-structure interaction for realistic high-speed railway bridges, we suggest that the bridge span be set at 1.4 to 1.5 times the carriage interval for simply supported bridges. If not, the use of four or more-than-four-span continuous bridges is suggested to reduce the train-induced vibration. This study also indicates that the vibration in the train is major generated from the rail irregularities and that from the bridge deformation is not dominant.

Multi-material core as self-centering mechanism for buildings incorporating BRBs

  • Conventional buckling restrained braces used in concentrically braced frames are expected to yield in both tension and compression without major degradation of capacity under severe seismic ground motions. One of the weakness points of a standard buckling restrained braced frame is the low post-yield stiffness and thus large residual deformation under moderate to severe ground motions. This phenomenon can be attributed to low post-yield stiffness of core member in a BRB. This paper introduces a multi-core buckling restrained brace. The multi-core term arises from the use of more than one core component with different steel materials, including high-performance steel (HPS-70W) and stainless steel (304L) with high strain hardening properties. Nonlinear dynamic time history analyses were conducted on variety of diagonally braced frames with different heights, in order to compare the seismic performance of regular and multi-core buckling restrained braced frames. The results exhibited that the proposed multi-core buckling restrained braces reduce inter-story and especially residual drift demands in BRBFs. In addition, the results of seismic fragility analysis designated that the probability of exceedance of residual drifts in multi-core buckling restrained braced frames is significantly lower in comparison to standard BRBFs.
