  • A multi-perforated tube is generally installed between the muffler inlet and in front of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts in the integrated urea-SCR muffler system in order to disperse the urea-water solution spray uniformly and to make better use of the SCR catalyst, which would result in an increase nitrogen oxide ($NO_x$) reduction efficiency and a decrease in the ammonia slip. The effects of the multi-perforated tube orifice area ratios on the internal flow characteristics were investigated analytically by using a general-purpose commercial software package. From the results, it was clarified that the multi-perforated tube geometry sensitively affected the generation of the bulk swirling motion inside the plenum chamber set in front of the SCR catalyst and to the uniformity index of the velocity distribution produced at the inlet of the catalyst. To verify the analytical results, engine tests were carried out in the ESC and ETC modes. Results of these tests indicated that the larger flow model in the longitudinal direction showed the highest NOx reduction efficiency, which was a good agreement with the analytical results.

  • A 40 mm medium caliber gun to be equipped with ventilation holes is designed and manufactured in this study. The muffler used is composed of holes, blades, and several spaces in the tube. Accordingly, a numerical analysis is performed with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) before testing the muffler. The validity of the numerical analysis is examined by analyzing the differences between the measured data of the firing test and the results of the CFD analysis. The CFD analysis showed that the numerical analysis can be used positively in the muffler design because no difference exists between the results of the field test and the CFD analysis. The test result also indicated a noise reduction of approximately 10 dB. Moreover, the muzzle velocity is almost equivalent, regardless of the muffler.

  • This study reports a numerical analysis of the internal flow characteristics of the integrated urea-SCR muffler system with the various geometries of the multi-perforated tube which is set up between the muffler inlet and in front of SCR catalysts. The multi-perforated tube is generally used to disperse uniformly the urea-water solution spray and to make better use of the SCR catalyst, resulting in the increased $NO_x$ reduction and decreased ammonia slip. The effects of the multi-perforated tube orifice area ratios on the velocity distributions in front of the SCR catalyst, which is ultimately quantified as the uniformity index, were investigated for the optimal muffler system design. The steady flow model was applied by using a general-purpose commercial software package. The air at the room temperature was used as a working fluid, instead of the exhaust gas and urea-water solution spray mixture. From the analysis results, it was clarified that the multi-perforated tube geometry sensitively affected to the formation of the bulk swirling motion inside the plenum chamber set in front of the SCR catalyst and to the uniformity index of the velocity distribution produced at the inlet of the catalyst.

  • Turbocharger has been widely used in many passenger cars in application with diesel engines because of high power and fuel efficiency. However, flow-induced noise (whoosh or hissing noise) which is generated within the compressor during its operation at marginal surge line can deteriorate noise characteristics. Hissing noise excitation was associated with the generation of turbulence within the turbocharger compressor and radiated through the transmission path in turbocharger system. In this study, a sharp-edged reactive-type muffler was devised and installed in the transmission path to reduce the hissing noise. Acoustic and fluid dynamic characteristics for the muffler were investigated which is related to the unsteadiness of turbulence and pressure in turbocharger system. A transfer matrix method was used to analyze the transmission loss of the muffler. Simple expansion muffler with extended tube of the reactive type is proposed for the reduction of high frequency component noise. Turbulence computation was carried out by a standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model. An optimal design condition of the muffler was obtained by extensive acoustic and fluid dynamic analysis on the engine dynamometer with anechoic chamber. A significant reduction of the hissing noise was achieved at the optimal design of the muffler as compared with the conventional turbocharger system.

  • The design of suction muffler for compressor aims to achieve a maximum noise reduction and a minimum pressure loss. Until now, the design process has been performed experimentally rather than theoretically. In this paper, to achieve the maximum noise reduction and minimum pressure loss. we studied the effect of the shape and volume of the expansion tube of the muffler on TL and pressure drop. We made an extensive use of computer program such as SYSNOISE. FLUENT, and STAR-CD to calculate the TL and pressure distribution of suction muffler. The design of the muffler is optimized with respect to flow loss and TL. Experiments are performed to check the result of design change, which proves satisfactory results. It is expected that this process can reduce time to design a muffler in the fields.

  • A BEM program is developed for the performance analysis of axisymmetric mufflers. In the program the sub-region method is used to deal with singularity or inner boundary. The program is applied to typical axisymmjetric mufflers such as simple expansion, extended tube, perforated tube and absorptive expansion sufflers. The transmission losses of the mufflers are calculated by the program and compared with experiments. It is found that the prediction is in a good agreement with measurement, except for the absorptive muffler with parallel lining.

  • In previous modeling of Helmholtz-type pulse combustion water heater, muffler and the motion of the flapper valve were omitted. In present work, these have been included in modeling for providing more accurate information regarding the thermal and dynamic behavior of the water heater. In addition, a computer simulation based on the modeling was developed. The comparison of computer predictions with available experimental data shows that the simulation is satisfactory in predicting the nature of operating behavior, amplitudes of the pressure oscillations, and the magnitude of the frequency. But the predicted time-averaged axial temperature of the flue gas along the flue tube length is somewhat below the previous experimental results. The temperature pulsation of the combustion chamber and the velocity pulsation of the flue gas were predicted which have never been measured in previous studies. In particular, the latter is of importance for a valid determination of the heat transfer enhancement due to the gas flow pulsation. Heat transfer results in flue tube were presented and discussed. Also the effects on the installation of the muffler were investigated.

  • The lattice filter formed transfer function has the advantage of computer simulation in the analysis of muffler. The transfer function is derived by using z-transformation for perforated elements in through-flow, cross-flow and reverse-flow type. A computer program for the prediction of the performance of automotive mufflers is developed using the transfer functions for uniform tube, open termination, expansion element, perforated elements, etc. The analytical results are verified by comparing with the experimental results for the transmission loss of a muffer. The effect of geometric configuration change of the muffler was invesigated in order to improve the performance of noise attenuation.

  • In this study, the computer simulation for the heat transfer in pulse combustion water heater is performed. The attention is focused to the effects of the installation of corebuster in the flue tube on heat transfer. The energy equations are established for both wall and gas side in the combustion chamber, flue way, exhaust chamber and muffler, and the numerical calculation is executed. Zone method takes longer computer calculation time compared with semi-zone method. Semi-zone method is chosen for numerical calculation. As a result of this study, it is found that the installation of the core buster in flue tube increases total heat transfer. It is also found that the total heat transfer is increased with the increasing of the ratio of the cross section area of corebuster to that of the flue tube. However, the heat transfer effect is negligible for the area ratio above 0.5.
