  • Seabed drilling system has recently been used to drill seafloor mineral resources. This case report highlights the procedure and result of sea-trial of seabed drilling system at off-shore of Japan on March, 2016 as well as briefs an international-technical trend of seabed drilling system. In case of having less than 100 m drill depth, seabed drilling system is favorable for seafloor mineral deposits which are mostly distributed within a narrow district and situated between 1000~3000 m water depth, compared with vessel-mounted drilling system. The system is featured by the remotely-operated drill gear, which has top drives, drill strings and mud system on it. The core samples are generally recovered to ship with seabed driller after a dive. In this sea-trail, recovery rate of core samples averagely shows about 55% and the recovered rocks mostly correspond to fresh and/or weak-altered basalt. In case of drilling hydrothermal ore deposit, the recovery rate would be lower than 55% because of the fragile nature of ores. Alternatively it is used to collect cutting chips through riser or bins in order to increase the recovery rates. Recently a reverse circulation method is taken considered to acquire the better cutting-chips. Three-leg type outrigger system and four-leg type leveling system are the competing landing-instruments of seabed drill system. However the landing efficiency using these gears has to be further monitored due to lack of case reports.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the growth rate and the optimal stocking density of sea cucumbers. Grow-out was studied in situ by conducting a follow-up survey using visible implant elastomer (VIE) tags. The rearing systems were made of polypropylene pipe for the frames and netting. The experiment ran for 70 days near Yeosu, Korea in the water depth of about 7 m. A total of 576 sea cucumbers which have three groups of body sizes (small: 5.15, medium: 12.34 and large: 23.26 g) were used. The five groups of stocking densities (150, 300, 450, 600 and $850g/m^2$) in rearing system for sea cucumber were considered. Sea cucumbers were fed a mixed diet (mud, mineral, fish meal, etc.). The feed was supplied to 10% of their body wet weight once every 7 days. The survival rate (73%) of sea cucumber in $850g/m^2$ was lower than those of other density groups ($150g/m^2$: 89%, $300g/m^2$: 84%, $450g/m^2$: 78% and $600g/m^2$: 86%). The survival rate of medium size group was higher than those of small and large groups regardless of the density (P<0.05). Most of density groups have no significant difference except for $850g/m^2$ (P>0.05). The growth rate of small size group ($0.63%day^{-1}$) was higher than those of medium ($0.38%day^{-1}$) and large ($0.34%day^{-1}$) group regardless of the density (P<0.05). The threshold water temperature was $11.0^{\circ}C$ for sea cucumber growth in winter season.

  • Detection of Vibrio vulnificus in fish farm and searching for the bactericidal methods on this bacteria were studied. To detect this microorganism in sea water, mud, fish and mussels, selective isolation methods and detection of vvhA gene were used from January to October,2000. V. vulnificus was detected from May when the water temperature was over $17^{\circ}C$. From June to September, higher than $19^{\circ}C$, this bacteria could be isolated from most of the samples. Freezing and refrigerating did not inhibit the growth of V. vulnificus. Citric acid did not show the bactericidal effect, but more than 500 mg/l of EDTA did. With the aid of UV and photocatalyst, $TiO_{2}$ showed bactericidal effect after 15 minute treatment. Photocatalytic system consisted of glass bead coated with $TiO_{2}$ and UV illumination showed bactericidal effect on V. vulnificus at the turnover rate of 0.2/min.

  • A numerical simulation technique of three-dimensional finite difference model is developed to study the groundwater flow system in Dejima, an upland area which faces Kasumigaura Lake. For general perspectives of the groundwater flow system, a steady state three-dimensinal model is simulated. For the sedimentary mud formations which are found in the representative formation, three situations where the horizontal permeability is equal to 10 times and 100 times of the vertical one. The finite difference grid used in the simulation has 60$\times$50$\times$30=90,000 nodes. A converged solution with a tolerance of 0.001 meter of hydraulic head is set. Having determined the flow net by using a steady state three-dimensional model, the results for the three cases of hydraulic conductivity are compared with the results of the tracer methods (Bae and Kayane, 1987). With the aid of four representative vertical cross-sections, groundwater flow systems in the study area are assumed. The results of these are reasonally good comparable with the results of the basin yield and thd recharge-discharge distribution 8.

  • In this paper, we propose a time constant control method for sieving local minimum problem of the multiuser detector using Hopfield neural network for synchronous multi-rate code division multiple access(CDMA) system in selective fading environments and its performance is compared with that of the parallel interference cancellation(PIC). We also assume that short scrambling codes of 256 chip length are used an uplink, suggest a simple correlation estimation algorithm and circuit complexity reduction method by using cyclostationarity property of short scrambling code.It is verified that multiuser detector using Hopfield neural network more efficiently cancels multiple access interference(MAI) and obtain better bit error rate and near-far resistant than conventional detector.

  • In recent years, attention on the inhabitation environments of animals and plants which coexist with humans is growing more and more, and relevant research is being activated. In habitats of rivers, a lot of factors are interacting, even among them, some elements especially such hydraulic factors as water velocity and water depth, and such geological shapes as gravels, sand and mud are being considered as primary elements. In this study, various field investigations are carried out to determine the relationship between the river habitats of fishes and hydraulic primary elements using high-tech equipments. Furthermore numerical experiments to classify such habitats according to topographical spaces are carried out. In detail, hydraulic field investigations performed in this study can be summarized as topographical survey, discharge measurement, water level fluctuation monitoring and so on. In numerical experiments, the RMA2 model of the commercial program, Surface-Water Modeling System (SMS), which is widely used in conducting a two-dimensional analysis of the flow behavior of a river is utilized. In conclusion, as a result of field investigation, the relationship between water velocity and water depth is obtained. And the relationship between water velocity and water temperature is identified, too. Finally, using above obtained results, the inhabitation environment was classified into Riffle, Glide, Run, Pool, and E.D.Z according to the relationship between water velocity and water depth.

  • In this report the practical case of Viking ship's conservation in Denmarke specially among the Eurpoean nations is introduced. The contents of it are summarized as follows :From 1957 to 1962 the Danish National Museum Salvaged five Viking ships from the bottom of Roskilde Fjord, Which were composed of the pieces of timber whose surface was soft because they had lain on the sea bed for about a thousand years. Excavation had been carried out in the same way as in the field by driving down a sheet piling around the wrecks and pumping the water out. These pieces of the wreck ships were packed in airtight plastic bags one by one to be transported for Brede and then immidiately had to go through the treatment for conservation. The conservation treatment process for the pieces includes three steps ; the preliminary process prior to the hardening treatment, the hardening and the assemble of the ships. In the first step ; the preliminary process, all remains of mud and shells from the fjord bed are washed off, and measuring followed ; every single piece of wreckage was drawn so that the form and size of the piece, nail holes, and breaks were registered before conservation. In the second ; the hardening treatment step, the pieces of the woreckage were filled with P.E.G. This Polyethylene Glycol method was the best to handle in the subsequent mounting of the ships in the museum. In the final, the Glycol-treated pieces were pieced together to spips with support of a system of reinforcements. They were to fit in place after corrections of the form were made several times.

  • These days, beds have been developed not as furniture to sleep in but Healthcare Furniture. The function of heating, non-electronic-waves and far-infrared rays have been added. Also, eco-friendly materials such as stone, mud, rubber and wood are combined to them together with the radiation-heating method using heat conduction through electronic coil and hot water circulation. Modern people suffer from stress and fatigue. The hot issue is "health." Focused on the health, the development of design for beds considering the influence electronic waves, anions, deep sleep and the density of toxic materials have on human bodies has become urgent. In this study, the trend, specification and efficiency of the functional health-related electronic coil technology are analyzed. Through the analysis, the environmental standards are set. According to them, technology, eco-friendly materials and additional functions for the development of the design are considered. Also, the government is promoting the IEC international standardization for the Korean traditional floor heating style beds. In preparation for that, we adopted new HPT method technology. It enables non-electronic-waves, low electricity and stable temperature maintenance control for the warm top and the cool bottom. Also, the head boards and the frames of the beds can be separated. Through this separation, the beds can be easily moved or installed. Eco-friendly materials such as Hinoki cypress wood and red clay and the existing tables function are combined to the head boards so they can be used as drawers and display shelves. If they are used as separate items, they can be used as covers. This is how we suggest the design for the heating beds.

  • Physical and acoustic properties of sediment on the southwestern Taean Penisula, the Yellow Sea, were studied using eight piston cores. The sediments in the study area are largely composed of sand which has been deposited with sea-level change after LGM(Last Glacial Maximum). After the sea-level rise, fine-grained sediments discharged from Keum River and neighboring coast area were deposited as muddy sand or sandy mud. Results of these sedimentary environment in this area, the texture of sediments are different from place to place with variable horizontal and vertical distribution of physical and acoustic properties. Correlations among the physical, geoacoustic properties, and mean grain size show slight deviations from those of the South Sea in spite of similar pattern. This is probably due to the differences in sedimentary environment, mineral composition, and measurement system.

  • In recent days, the consumption of stainless steel in the propulsion shafting systems for small-medium class vessel is increased due to its high corrosion protection with wear resistant properties. Unfortunately the small and medium class vessel that operated in the west-south sea area of Korean peninsula experienced heavy wear down due to the role of mud. In the event of wear or broken down, the propeller shaft must be replaced by new one, but the new shaft is very expensive and time-consuming for order made supply. In this case, the methods of built up for wear and broken shaft by welding is one of the most effective cases. In this study, the built up welding for austenitic stainless steel shaft has been accomplished by various pre-surface treatment, welding methods, post heattreatment and inspection. The results confirmed that the built-up welding was one of the effective methods for stainless steel shafting.
