A new endemic focus of Heterophyes nocens, Pygidiopsis summa, and other intestinal flukes in a coastal area of Muan-gun, Chollanam-do (전라남도 무안군 해안 지역에서 발견한 유해이형흡충, 표주박이형흡충 및 기타 장흡충류의 새 유행지)

  • A small coastal village of Muan-gun, Chollanam-do, was surveyed for intesti- nal fluke infections, especially heterophyids such as Heterophwes nocens and Ftsiniopsis summc by fecal examination on 108 inhabitants. The egg Positive rate of heterophyids was very high. 75.0%, and that of other parasites was comparatively low.0.9-3.7% by parasite species . After treatment of 20 patients showing high E. P. G. with praziquantel and purging with Mgs04, total 3,864 specimens of H. nocens were collected from the diarrheic stools of all the patients treated (3-1,338 individuallyl and total 703 p. summc were harvested from 18 patients (1-170 individually), together loth several other species of flukes. Other flukes included Stictodora jlscotn (164 specimens from 4 patients), Heterophwopsis continuo (2 from 2 patients), and Gwmnophalloides seoi (4 from 3 patients). From this study, the sutra- veyed coastal area of Muan-gun, Chollanam-do was proven to be a new endemic focus of H. nocens and p. summa. The occurrence of a few infected cases surf:mists that this area should also be a low-grade endemic area of S. Juscctc, H. continuo, and G. seoi.

Comparison of Volatile Flavor Compounds of Domestic Onions (Allium cepa) during Storage (국내산 양파의 저장 중 휘발성 향기성분 비교)

  • Volatile flavor compounds of onions were analyzed and compared during storage at $0.5^{\circ}C$, which harvested in 6 regions, such as Muan, Buan, Andong and 3 regions of Changnyeong (Yueo, Jangma and Seongsan). A total of 45 compounds were detected in samples by solid phase microextraction (SPME)/GC/MSD, consisting mainly of sulfur-containing compounds (21), aldehydes (13), ketones (2) and miscellaneous compounds (9). The sulfur-containing compounds were major compounds with ranges of $66.9{\sim}86.9%$ of total volatiles in 0 day of storage as regardless of harvested regions. Three regions (Yueo, Seongsan and Muan) had high amounts of over 4,043 ng/g in 0 day of storage, whereas 2 regions (Muan and Yueo) only had amounts of over 2,400 ng/g after 60 days of storage. Five sulfur-containing compounds known as having antioxidant activity (2,4-, 2,5-dimetylthiophene, 2-vinyl-1,3-dithiane, 5-methoxy thiazole and 3,5-diethyl-1,2,4-trithiolane and isomer) were the high levels in 3 regions (Yueo, Seongsan and Muan) during 60 day of storage. These 3 regions had also the highest amounts in 5 sulfur-containing compounds known as having anticarcinogenic activity ((Z)-, (E)-methyl propenyl disulfide, (Z)-, (E)-propenyl propyl disulfide, and di-2-propenyl disulfide) and kept same trend after 60 days of storage.

Corrosion of Calcareous Rocks and Ground Subsidence in the Muan Area, Jeonnam, Korea (전남 무안지역에 분포하는 석회질암의 용식작용과 지반침하)

  • This study examines the distribution of basement rocks in Gyochon-ri, Muan-eup, Muan-gun, Jeonnam where ground subsidence occurred in June 2005, and traces corrosion of limestone. Mica schist and rhyolite are distributed in the surface of the study area, but thick limestone layer with large and small caverns are distributed underground. A horizon of limestone with maximum width of 300 m and 4 km of length was found along the detour which is in the north of pound subsidence. Such identification of limestone presence would be very useful to predict potential ground subsidence. Limestone in this area was disturbed by fold and fault due to severe shearing deformation. Small caverns were frequently found in anticline part of folds formed in limestone layer. Schists with different thicknesses were intercalated in the limestone with shearing deformation and consist of sheet silicate minerals (chlorite and mica) and quartz. In sections of weathered specimen, it is shown that biotite of schist part was altered into chlorite and corrosion of calcite around the schist followed. This suggest that ground water permeated between intercalated sheet silicate minerals and corrosion of limestone began. And small caverns were generated where active corrosion occurred. This study suggests that because of many reasons (for instance, reclamation of the Bulmu reservior and excess pumping), cavern water level was lowered and cave sediments were removed, and it caused ground subsidence to occur.

Removal Effects of Pb(II) using Natural Clays from Domestic (국내산 천연점토를 이용한 Pb(II)의 제거효과)

  • This study was carried out to investigate characteristics and Pb(II) removal effect of natural Muan, Seosan, Kangjin clays in the batch mode test to develope the low-priced treatment agent of wastewater which contain heavy metals in order structural, optical properties and chemical compositions of natural clays from domestic have been investigated to have high specific surface area and have minerals such as $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$. As a result, removal effects of Pb(II) ions on clays were reached at equilibrium in aqueous solutions by stirring about 20minutes. The removal effect of Pb(II) ions was best for Seosan clay than Muan or Kangjin clays in terms of fixed time. The results show the possibility of continuous treatment system of wastewater which contain heavy metals by using natural clays from domestic.

  • It was investigated to develop the contents for the local government for the purpose of providing various and correct information. Especially it was focused to take advantage of spatial information techniques, GIS(Geographic Information Systems) and RS(Remote Sensing). The research site for this study was Muan-gun located at the south-western part of Korea, and this site has very high opportunities to became the central point for the economical and tourist industry. The regional information contents for Muan-gun was developed and composed of three elements, internet related, geographic information related and satellite imagery related elements These contents will make a contribution for the local government to present the regional information effectively and efficiently.

Effect of Fertilizers on Yield and Storage Quality of Early Maturing Variety in Onion (조생종양파의 수량과 저장성에 미치는 비료의 영향)

  • To find out the optimum fertilizer level for onion, early maturing cultivar Fechongjoseng, experiment with four fertilizer levels was conducted of the field of the paddy and upland in Muan and Changyeong from Sep.1993 to Feb.1995. The yield character of onion was higher and rate of the rottenness was lowest under the treatment of $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$=28-9.5-23Kg/10a in the soil of paddy and upland field of Muan area. But the onion yield was excellent and rate of the rottenness was lowest under the treatments, $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$=21-19-17.3Kg/10a, in the soil of paddy field and $N-P_2O_5-K_2O$=28-9.5-23Kg/10a, in the soil of upland field of Changyeong area.

Biodiversity of Lepidopteran Insects of Mt. Seungdal-san, Muan, Jeonnam, Korea (전남 무안 승달산 나비목 곤충의 생물다양성 연구)

  • We investigated the species richness of lepidopteran insects (excluding butterflies and microlepidoptera) of Mt. Seungdal-san, Muan-gun, Jeollannam-do, Korea, from 2003 to 2005 using two portable light traps. A total of species comprised 423 species belongs to 17 families were identified. The family Noctuidae with 209 species was dominant in the area followed by Geometridae with 132 species. Based on the number of individuals collected, Geometridae was the highest mostly due to an ennomine species (Alcis angulifera). Monthly fluctuations of moth species richness present an M-shaped curve with two high peaks at June and August. Comparisons of species diversity of yearly captures revealed that the diversity of 2003 was higher than that of 2004, but the diversities of between 2003 and 2005, and between 2004 and 2005 were no different.
