  • In this study, we derived the wind speed at 50 m and 80 m above sea level from 567 stations over a period of 1 year and correlated to measured wind speed at 5 radiosonde sites. From these correlations, we derived and analyzed the spatial distribution of wind map over Korea based on hourly observational data recorded over a period of 5 years from 2004 to 2008. As a results, wind speed is generally high over seashores, mountains, and islands. Mean wind speed over Korea at 50 and 80 m above sea level for 5 years during 2004 to 2008 seasonally are highest at Spring, and then followed by Winter, Fall, and Summer. In 76 (14%) stations, mean wind speed at 80 m above sea level for 5 years during 2004 to 2008 are greater than $5ms^{-1}$. The prevailing winds over Korea at 80 m above sea level for 5 years during 2004 to 2008 are North (44%), Northwest (16%), and West (15%). In 99 stations, the % of wind faster than $5ms^{-1}$ was higher than 40%, and in 62 stations, the % of wind faster than $5ms^{-1}$ was higher than 50%. In 178 station, the % of prevailing winds was higher than 30%, and there are 7 stations which also have wind speeds over $5ms^{-1}$, ranking from highest to lowest, Dongsong, Daegwallyeong, Baekun Mt., Hyangrobong Mt., Sorak Mt., Gosan, and Misiryeong Mt..

  • Natural forest stand plays a very important role to understand the forest ecosystem in Korea, in which there is no ancient forests aye left. Several old growth Korean fir stands were studied to determine their naturalness. Internationally accept-ed criteria for virgin or natural forests were used and the changes in several stages by stand dynamics were applied. Although the areas survey is limited in size, it was discovered that they clearly represent certain characteristics of naturalness. This study and collected data will hopefully be the starting point for the further studies for naturalness of forest in Korea in the future.

  • The crustose lichen genus Pertusaria comprises over ca. 800 species worldwide. In total, 20 Pertusaria species were localized to the Mt. Sorak and Jeju-do in Korea. To date, information regarding the distribution of Pertusaria species in the South Korean peninsula is scarce. In this study, we collected Pertusaria species across South Korea and identified them based on morphological, chemical, and molecular characteristics. Of the 387 samples collected, we identified 24 taxa and 1 variety, of which 17 were previously recorded, and 6 taxa were newly found in South Korea (P. leioplaca, P. leucosora var. violascens, P. texana, P. thiospoda, P. thwaitesii, and P. xanthodes), 2 known species were transferred to Varicellaria (Varicellaria lactea and V. velata), one species was transferred to Variolaria as a new record (Variolaria multipunctoides) and one was a new species (P. jogyeensis J. S. Park & J.-S. Hur, sp. nov.). Characteristics of the newly discovered species, P. jogyeensis, are as follows: smooth to bumpy thallus, scattered to crowded poriform apothecia, blackish ostioles, definitely sunken, thin yellowish green rims around ostioles, 8-spored ascus, and the presence of perlatolic acid and thiophaninic acid (chlorinated xanthone). Phylogenetic studies on P. jogyeensis based on the mitochondrial small subunit sequence revealed proximity to P. flavicans and P. texana, and supported its classification as a new species within the genus Pertusaria. Additionally, we describe the chemical composition and morphology of all listed species in detail and provide an artificial key for identification.

  • External morphology and numerical taxonomy by principal component analysis and cluster analysis were investigated to understand the taxonomic relationships on the populations of Hanabusaya asiatica from 6 different habitats. Additionally H. latisepala was used as a outgroup. The distinct characters to each habitat were not present in the measurement of 21 qualitative characters except for some native individuals in the top of Mt. Sorak and Hyangrobong based on leaf shape and bracts. This results were recognized as the continuous variations of external morphology. The populations of H. latisepala and H. asiatica were identified by calyx lobe shape. The results obtained based on the principal component(PC) analysis of treated 78 OTU were divided into two groups by PC 1,2,3, and the sums of contributions for the total variance were 50.07% (PC1 22.3% , PC2 15.7%, PC3 12.0%, respectively), and six populations were not distinctly identified as illustrated in two dimensions with PC1 and PC2. In cluster analysis based on average linkage cluster analysis and Ward's method, there were similarities in the composition of clustered taxa, and each populations were not identified.

  • From Salix maximowiczii of the Korean Salix, morphological and palynological characters were investigated by stereoscopic, light, and scanning electron microscopes. Also, this study was eonducted to investigate the effect of meteorological factors on the disjunct distribution in Salix maximowiczii forests grown within the restricted region. 1. Morphological characters of S. maximowiczii clarified with the descriptions and figures. 2. The palynological description was made to the S. maximowiczii and identified distinctly species. 3. S. maximowiczii is distributed only in Baekdam and Hangyeryong valley of Mt. Sorak in Kangwon-do, and valley of height region in Kyeongseong-gun (Hamgyongbuk-do), Sinhueng-gun, and Pungsan-gun (Hamgyongnam-do) in North Korea. 4. Water factors was better than temperature factors in the influence of meteorological factors for disjunct distribution. 5. These ecological and taxonomical informations could be used in practical application for silvicultural prescription, such as erosion control forest, timber production, and development of green area in river bank.

  • The narrow interal grid is effective in accuracy, but it is not able to make a densely grided sample, so that smoothing is requared. In digital elevation models, an application of the finite elements method is effective to smooth the undesired noise which is generated in aquisition of elevation data. And this is one of the simple and direct method to solve the problem for discontinuity of terrain. Therefore, the finite elements method is applied to study. In digital elevation model by appling the finite element, smoothing is affected by the height weight. In this study, the relation equation between elevation weight and standard deviation of smoothing was obstained as Y = 1900625 $X^4-312987.6$ $X^3+20330.72$ $X^2-578.6029$ X+12.63772 and from this function, Optimum elevation weight is 0.05.
