  • Sampels of Korean field mice (apodemus peninsulae peninsulae Thomas ) from six localities in Korea were used for the analyses of mitochondrial DNa (Mt DNA) fragment patterns resulted from the digestion with eight restriction enzymes. A total of 29 fragments were recognized and seven mtDNA clones were revealed. The nucleotide-sequence divergences (p) among the seven mtDNA clones ranged from 0.42% to 2.01%. Moreover, the seven clones were grouped into three major subgroups with the mean divergence value of 1.52% among them. One subgroup was composed of three clones of 18 sample from three localities (16, Cheongu: 1, Mt. Sobaek : 1, Mt. weolak) L another subgroup, three clones of eight samples from four localities (2, Cheongju ; 2 , Mt. Weolak ; 2, Mt. Gaya ; 2, haenam) ; and the last subgroup, one clone of two samples from Cheongju. Three subgroups were also distinct with one another in their mtDNA genotypes of Stu I and the former two subgroups differed from the last subgroup in their genotypes with Pvu II. Further analyses with additional samples from various localities in Korea appeared to be necessary in order to clarify the taxonomic status of the distinct mtDNA subgroups.

  • The Baptistina family is one of the typical young asteroid families with an age estimated to be about 140-320 Myrs old (Masiero et al. 2012); considered to have not enough time to experience a significant collisional and dynamical evolution since it was formed. Therefore, it may offer a unique insight into spin rate distribution of relatively fresh fragments and physical mechanism of a family break-up event. Observations of the Baptistina family asteroids were conducted during 111 nights from 2013 Oct. to 2015 Feb., using 0.5 m- to 2 m- class telescopes at 6 observatories in the northern hemisphere. We used CCD cameras on the Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory (SOAO) 0.6 m telescope on Mt. Sobaek, Korea, the Lemmonsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (LOAO) 1.0 m telescope on Mt. Lemmon, USA, the Tubitak Ulusal Gozlemevi (TUG) 1.0 m telescope in Bakirlitepe, Turkey, the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) 1.8 m telescope on Mt. Bohyun, Korea, the McDonald Observatory 2.1 m Otto Struve Telescope on Mt. Locke, USA, and the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) Observatory 2.4 m telescope on Mt. Doi Inthanon, Thailand. Here, we will present our preliminary results for lightcurve analyses of Baptistina family members.

  • The present study was undertaken to classify and describe the Quercus mongolica forest on Mt. Sobaek (36°50'∼ 37°07'N, 128°25'∼ 128°35'E), Korea by a reciprocal averaging methol (RA ordination) and the methodology of the ZM school of phytosociology. Atemporal vegetation tabel was prepared by the RA ordination. As a result it showed that the RA ordination on the first axis is very applicable for selecting the character and differential species of vegetation units of the Quercus mongolica forest. The phytosociological investigations were carried out in 34 stands on the mountain. The field data obtained were classified by the tabel comparison method. For the establishment of new vegetation units, the floristic composition of the Quercus mongolica forest was compared with those of the other vegetation units of the Mt. Sobaek, Considering the candidates of the character and differential species derived from RA ordination. As the result, the forest vegetation was classified into the following vegetation units; Fagetea crenatae Miyawaki et al. 1968 Acero-Quercetalia mongolicas Song 1988 em. Takeda et al.1994 Lindero-Quercetalia mongolicae Kim 1990 1. Lindero-Quercetum mongolicae assoc. nov. 1-1. quercetosum serratae subassoc. nov 1-2. typicum subassoc. nov. Rhododendro-Qurcion mongolicas Song 1988 em. Takeda et al. 1994. It is inferred that the Lindero-Quercion mongolicae and the Rhododendro-Quercion mongolicae corresponded to the cool-temperate forests of central and northern areas, respectively, in Korean Peninsula. Syntaxonomical synonyms were also rearranged based on the result of the present study. On the other hand, the RA ordination of stands and species on the first and second axes revealed some environmental gradients such as altitute, human impact and species richness between the vegetation units. However, the RA ordinations is considered to be less indicative for the gradients of the lower vegetation units than association. With the present study. some phytosociological problems in Korea were discussed here in detail from the floristic viewpoint.

  • The objectives of this study, an analysis of the variation for leaf and fruit characteristics among the selected ten populations of Sorbus commixta Hedl. could be used for the conservation of gene resources and could provide information to superior trees selection. The results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows; Approximately, the Mt. Sungin population at Ulleung island showed larger values in overall characteristics and populations. On the other hand, Mt. Halla population at Jeju island showed the smaller values of the overall characteristics and populations. ANOV A tests showed that there were statistically significant differences in all leaf characteristics among the populations as well as individual trees within populations. But, for fruit characteristics, differences were statistically significant only among the populations. Cluster analysis using single linkage method based on leaf and fruit characteristics showed that ten selected populations of S. commixta in Korea could be clustered into three groups. Group I is Mt. Sungin at Ulleung island, Group II is Mt. Halla at Jeju island, and Group III comprises Osan, Mt. Kaji, Mt. Duckyoo, Mt. Balwang, Mt. Sobaek, Mt. O-dae, Mt. Jiri, and Mt. Taebaek. The selection level based on major agronomic traits, which are the Number of Fruit per Fruiting Lateral(NFL) over 50, and Fruit Length(FL) and Width(FW) over 10 mm, and Weight of 100 Fruit(WFI00) over 66 g, was applied on 100 sample trees, and five trees were selected. The selection effects from selected trees in NFL, FL, FW, and WF100 were evaluated as 132%, 151 %, 142%, and 264% compared to the mean of those 100 sample trees, respectively. Especially, Ulleung 2 showed excellent values that NFL and WFI00 were 95, and 69 g, respectively, suggesting a promising new cultivar for larger fruit and high productivity.

  • On the basin of RAPD analysis, genetic diversity and structure of the natural populations of Abies holophylla was estimated by AMOVA procedure. The average value of percent of polymorphic markers was 71.9%. Most variation existed among individuals within population(80.2%). Genetic differentiation among populations(${\Phi}_{ST}$) was 0.198. When the populations were grouped as two region(i.e., Taebaek and Sobaek Mountain Regions), 8.5% of the total genetic variation was explained as regional differences. The heterogeneity of molecular variance among populations was investigated with Bartlett's test, which revealed that populations of Mt. Taebaek and Mt. Gariwang were more heterogeneous. Generally, the populations of Taebaek Mountain Reion were more heterogeneous than those of Sobaek Mountain Reion. Finally, the applicability of AMOVA to the populations frenetic study was discussed in comparison with other measures of genetic differentiation which were widely used.

  • In recent years, the occurrence of abnormal weather has increased rapidly, increasing the frequency of torrential rain. As a result, stable water resource management is difficult, and human and material damage is increasing. Various measures are being established to reduce damage caused by torrential rains, but small-scale mountain catchments are relatively difficult to manage due to lack of basic plan. In this study, the risk of flooding was evaluated using the rainfall-flow model in the Yeonhwa-dong catchment national park among national parks in Korea. The Yeonhwa-dong catchment of Mt. Sobaeksan was simulated to cause flooding when rainfall of more than 50 years occurred, and it was confirmed that there was a high risk of water resource structures, safety facilities, and trails.
