This study was carried out to analysis change of distribution and habitat location environment of Korean Fir which is typically vulnerable species by the climate change in Mt. Jiri and Halla. Korean Fir was decreased 18% during 27 year since year 1981, Mt. Halla was 34% during 15 years since year 1988. In the same periods, Temperature change was increased from 8.56 to $9.36^{\circ}C$, from 11.2 to $12.1^{\circ}C$. Distribution changes by the elevation showed higher change ratio 1,400~1,600m in Mt. Jiri and 1,200~1,900m in Mt. Halla. Changes of Korean Fir each slope aspects was high $180{\sim}360^{\circ}$ in Mt. Jiri, $45^{\circ}$ in Mt. Halla. In slope was $30^{\circ}$ in Mt. Jiri and $20^{\circ}$ in Mt. Halla. Changes by reliefs was 12 in Mt. Jiri, 0 or 15 in Mt. Halla, and Sites of Korean Fir was convex slopes both of two areas. Changes by soils was in the good drainage textures.
The character species of Abies koreana community in Mt. Halla national park, Korea, and it s nomenclature was reviewed. According to the code of phytosociological nomenclature (Barkman et al., 1986), the association name was corrected from Saso-Abietetum koreanae Yim et al. 1990 nov. in the Korean J. Ecol. 13(2): 101-130 (1990) to Saso quelpaertensi-Abietetum koreanae (Song et Nakanishi) corr. Yim et Kim 1990.
The production and decomposition of litters and nutrient cycling of forests were studied at the pine forests such as Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigida, Pinus thunbergii, Abies holophylla and Larix kaempfer. The annual litter production of the P. densiflora forest was the most on Mt. Mudeung which was 620.75g/$m^2$ and the least on Mt. Halla which was 155.00g/$m^2$. The decay rate of litters was the highest at the P. densiflora forest on Mt. Mudeung which was k=0.256 and the lowest at the P. densiflora forest on Mt. Halla and A. holophylla on Mt. Jiri which were k=0.099. The half time of decomposition of litters was shortest at the P. densiflora forest on Mt. Mudeung and the longest at the P. densiflora on Mt. Halla and A. holophylla forests on Mt. Jiri. The average decay rate of the L. kaempferi forests which was k=0.204 was the highest and that of the A. holophylla forests which was k=0.122 was the lowest. The decay rate tended to decrease against increasing the altitude. The annual production of litterr, the contents of mineral nutrients and the amounts of mineral nutrients inputted into the forest soil tended to increase in proportion to the decay rate, k.

Wet precipitation samples were collected in Jeju City and Mt. Halla-1100 site (a site at an altitude of 1100 m on Mt. Halla) during 2011-2013, and their major ionic species were analyzed to examine the chemical composition and characteristics. A comparison of ion balance, electric conductivity, and acid fraction of precipitation revealed correlation coefficients in the range of r = 0.950~0.991, thereby implying the high quality of analytical data. Volume-weighted mean pH and electric conductivity corresponded to 4.86 and 25.5 µS/cm for Jeju City, and 4.98 and 15.1 µS/cm for Mt. Halla-1100 site, respectively. Ionic strengths of the wet precipitation in Jeju City and Mt. Halla-1100 site corresponded 0.3 ± 0.5 and 0.2 ± 0.2 mM, respectively, thereby indicating that more than 30 % of total precipitation was within a pure precipitation criteria. The precipitation with a pH range of 4.5 - 5.0 corresponded to 40.8 % in Jeju City, while the precipitation with a pH range of 5.0 - 5.5 corresponded to 56.9 % in Mt. Halla-1100 site, thereby indicating slightly more weak acidity than that in Jeju city. The volume-weighted mean concentration (µeq/L) of ionic species was in the order of Na+ > Cl- > nss-SO42- > NO3- > Mg2+ > NH4+ > H+ > nss-Ca2+ > PO43- > K+ > CH3COO- > HCOO- > NO2- > F- > HCO3- > CH3SO3- at Jeju City area, while it corresponded to Na+ > Cl- > nss-SO42- > NO3- > NH4+ > H+ > Mg2+ > nss-Ca2+ > PO43- > CH3COO- > K+ > HCOO- > NO2- > F- > HCO3- > CH3SO3- at Mt. Halla-1100 site. The compositions of sea salts (Na+, Cl-, Mg2+) and secondary pollutants (NH4+, nss-SO42-, NO3-) corresponded to 66.1 % and 21.8 %, respectively, in Jeju City and, 49.9 % and 31.5 %, respectively, in Mt. Halla-1100 site. The acidity contributions in Jeju City and Mt. Halla-1100 site by inorganic acids, i.e., sulfuric acid and nitric acid, corresponded to 93.9 % and 91.4 %, respectively, and the acidity contributions by organic acids corresponded to 6.1 % and 8.6 %, respectively. The neutralization factors in Jeju City and Mt. Halla1100 site by ammonia corresponded to 29.8 % and 30.1 %, respectively, whereas the neutralization factors by calcium carbonate corresponded to 20.5 % and 25.2 %, respectively. From the clustered back trajectory analysis, the concentrations of most ionic components were higher when the airflow pathways were moved from the continent to Jeju area.
The forest vegetation of Mt. Halla national park area. Cheju island, Korea, was classified into six associations in three alliances and two associations in unidentified alliances by Z-M school method as follows: Unidentified alliance Saso-Abietetum Koreanae assoc. nov. Acero-Quercion mongoliae Kim et Yim 1988 Hepatico-Quercetum mongolicae assoc. nov. Saso-Carpinioin laxiflorae all. nov. Saso-Carpinetum laxiflorae assoc. nov. Daphniphyllo-Carpinetum tschonoskii assoc. nov. Asaro-Quercetum serratae assoc. nov. Rhododendro-Pinion densiflorae Kim et Yim 1988 Saso-Pinetum densiflorae assoc. nov. pinus thunbergii community Unidentified alliance Ardiso-Torretum nuciferae assoc. nov. Among them one now alliance and seven new associations were found and marked with "nov."
This study researched the number of individuals of Roe deer (Capreolus pygarus tianschanicus Satunin), which inhabit Mt. Halla (Hallasan) National Park and its neighboring areas ranging about $270km^2$ areas. The research was done from November(late fall), 1998 to March(early spring), 2001, and additional research was carried out from November 2006 to January 2007. As a result of this, we identified a total of 1,444 deer, and found out the fact that there lived 5.33 deer per $km^2$. By region, we identified a maximum of 270 deer at Donnaeko hiking path and a minimum of 12 deer at the adjacent areas to the second Sanrok-road. The frequency of Roe deer group sighting was higher at the edge of Hallasan National Park than any other surveyed region. Thus, it is estimated that the distribution of Roe deer of Hallasan is more influenced by the quantity and quality of food than human-made interference during wintry season.

In this study, to grasp the current status of cone insects occurrence on Korean fir (Abies koreana) in Mt. Halla, 117 cones damaged by cone insects in three areas in Mt. Halla were collected and placed in growth chamber until adults emerged from the cones from August to October on 2019. And species and numbers of adults emerged from the cones were identified. Also proportion of cones damaged by cone insects was examined at four study plots in Mt. Halla. As a result, total 233, 101, and 4 adults of Dioryctria abietella (Denis & Schiffermüller), Cydia kamijoi Oku, and Scathophaga stercoraria (L.) were identified from 117 collected cones, respectively. The average number of emerged adults per cone was 1.99 for D. abietella and 0.86 for C. kamijoi. And the average damage rate of cone insects in four study plots of Mt. Halla ranged from 49.7-80.1 percent, with differences between regions. Also, our results show that positive correlation between the damage rate per tree and the number of cones per tree, and between number of emerged cone insects and the size of cones were found. It suggests that the cone insects prefer host trees with lots of cones per tree and with larger size of cones.
This study is to examine the environmental characteristics of subpopulations of Ilex crenata var. microphyllla Max. distributed in the east-west slopes of Mt. Halla National Park based on analyzing the factors of environment, vegetation and soil. The result of the TWINSAPN analysis conducted on 56 study plots between the altitudes of 500 m and 1600 m of east-west slopes of Mt. Halla National Park can be divided into five communities-Prunus maximowiczii Rupr., Manshurian fullmoon Maple, Carpinus tschonoskii Max., Daphniphyllum macropodum Miq., Quercus serrata Thunb. ex Murray and Pinus thunbergil Parl. Among these communities, the plot with high importance percentage of the subpopulation of Ilex crenata var. microphyllla Max., is the Carpinus tschonoskii Max.-Daphniphyllum macropodum Miq. included in the altitude of 600m~1200m radius. The dominant species of the upper shrub layer was Carpinus tschonoskii Max.(I.P.: 29.82%) while the dominant species of the canopy layer was Daphniphyllum macropodum Miq.(I.P.: 26.76%). For the understory layer the dominant species was Ilex crenata var. microphyllla Max.. Species diversity index was on the low end with 0.7424, indicating the stably formed climax community of Carpinus tschonoskii Max.. The analysis of soil properties showed high concentrations of organic matters, available phosphate and Ca, Mg, the high importance percentage of the of Ilex crenata var. microphyllla Max. is found in altitude of 600m~800m on the eastern slope and the altitude of 800m~1,000m radius on the west slope. This region is included in the southern part of the cold/hot forest zone, its high importance percentage of Carpinus tschonoskii Max. and low in the species diversity index of 0.7424, and has formed stable climax community of Carpinus tschonoskii Max. in Mt. Halla.
