  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to introduce and examine the possibilities of infrared (IR) imaging, biophoton detection and gas discharge visualization(GDV) as diagnostic tools in Korean Medicine. Methods : To review the basic mechanism and measurement methods of three modalities, concepts in physics were introduced. Physical backgrounds of IR, biophoton and GDV were briefly explained based on recent research papers. Simple electronics was employed for relevant detectors. In order to find the relation between Korean Medicine and these methods, papers on their applications were reviewed. Opinions from the experts on each modality were obtained from their papers and private communications. Results and Conclusions : IR imaging has been used as an auxiliary diagnostic tool but there are some rooms for the improvement for clinical applications. Experimental confirmation of the meridian activation by a moxa cigar is necessary for its verification. Biophoton is not correlated with human skin temperature but it has a circadian rhythm. Biophoton and GDV have a negligible relation if any. Therefore there are no correlations among three modalities in terms of basic mechanisms. But their clinical relations are yet to be scrutinized. Biophoton and GDV need more rigorous clinical tests before they can be used as diagnostic tools.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to report a pediatric patient with bilateral facial nerve palsy. Methods The patient was treated by acupuncture, moxa, herb(Cheongungkyeoji-tang, Palmulgunja-tang) for 1 month. We described his progression and measured the degree by House-Brackmann scale and Yanagihara's scale. Results He started getting better from 7th day of the onset. During admission, the facial palsy had improved from Grade V/V(Rt/Lt) to Grade II/II(Rt/Lt) by House-Brackmann scale and from 0/0(Rt/Lt)score to 36/36(Rt/Lt)score by Yanagihara's scale. Conclusions Compared with unilateral facial nerve palsy cases, this case was not different from the time when it got better, and how much it improved. However, biased degree had increased and then decreased because of the time gap between the right facial improvements and left facial one.

  • Facial nerver paralysis is classified as Supranuclear, Peripheral and Nuclear. It is mostly Spontaneous Peripheral Facial Paralysis(Bell's palsy) or Supranuclear Paralysis by C.V.A, but Nuclear Facial Nerve Paralysis is rarely reported. We treated a 64-years-old female patient who had 7-years history of C.V.A with hypertension and heart disease, and complained of these symptoms; left facial palsy, ocular dysmetria, diplopia, and right extremity weakness. We diagnosed as direct attack from the wind pathogen(風邪入中) with deficiency of both Gi(Qi, vital energy) and blood(氣血雨虛), and employed Oriental medical treatments; herb-medication, acupuncture and moxa therapy. The result was relatively acceptable. So We report this case with a brief review of related literatures.

Method : Various contents about taech'u acupoint(GVl4) can be inquired into through investing and analyzing 41 kinds of documentary records ranging from old books to contemporary materials. Results : 1. The spot of taech'u acupoint(GVl4) is under the process of the 7th cervical vertebral. 2. Taech'u acupoint(GVl4) can be found in two positions which can be posturized by a patient. One is a position in which a patient lies on his/her face. The other is a position in which a patient sits up straight with his/her head bent. 3. The depth of acupuncturing can be varied from 3 puns to 2 chons. 4. The amount of moxa can be varied from 3 jangs to 60 jangs. 5. To treat throush taech'u acupoint(GVl4) can lower fever, relieve a state of oversensitiveness, and let vitality flown. Conclusions : The range of treating through taech'u acupoint(GVl4) can be chronic wasting diseases, neuropsychotic diseases, feverish diseases, respiratory diseases, and diseases which can be around taech'u acupoint(GVl4).
