Hygroscopic aerosols can rapidly grow in size by steam condensation even under subsaturated steam conditions. Much efforts have been made to handle this process, but there have been computational difficulties in handling the condensational growth of hygroscopic aerosols by contentional methods. A recently released computer code, CONTAIN 2.0, employs a new technique called Moving Sectional Method(MSM) to handle the growth of hygroscopic aerosols. As a part of the model verification efforts, we have used the code to simulate the VANAM M3U hygroscopic aerosol experiment. We assess the accuracies of the new MSM and the conventional Fixed Sectional Method(ESM) based on the simulation results. Also presented are discussions about the robustness of the MSM.
An axisymmetric flow induced by a train moving into a tunnel is numerically simulated. The effect of train shape on wavefront of a compression wave created by a train is investigated parametrically using several model trains having the same nose shape but different blockage. The zonal method combined with the Fortified Solution Algorithm (FSA) is employed as a numerical algorithm to solve this moving body problem. The computational result is compared with the experimental data. Good agreement is obtained, which justifies the present computational approach. The compression waves created by the model trains are compared and the result shows that the pressure gradient of the wavefront of the compression wave becomes small in the case of small blockage even though the nose shape is same. The wavefront is not determined solely by the cross-sectional area distribution of the train nose.
LB layers of L-$\alpha$-DLPC deposited by LB method were deposited onto n-type silicon wafer as Z-type film. Films made up of 8, 16 layers of lipid with long alkyl chain and the thickness of monolayer and multilayers was determined by ellipsometry. It was deposited Ag and Al onto LB layers and silicon wafer for electrode and small electrode exhibit high capacitance and low leakage current. The C-V curves of the MLS capacitor shows very high saturation value of capacitance. And cross-sectional SEM image of MLS capacitor indicated the presence of pore with Al electrode and we found that the Ag is good for electrode metal.
This paper presents a finite element procedure for dynamic analysis of non-uniform Timoshenko beams made of axially Functionally Graded Material (FGM) under multiple moving point loads. The material properties are assumed to vary continuously in the longitudinal direction according to a predefined power law equation. A beam element, taking the effects of shear deformation and cross-sectional variation into account, is formulated by using exact polynomials derived from the governing differential equations of a uniform homogenous Timoshenko beam element. The dynamic responses of the beams are computed by using the implicit Newmark method. The numerical results show that the dynamic characteristics of the beams are greatly influenced by the number of moving point loads. The effects of the distance between the loads, material non-homogeneity, section profiles as well as aspect ratio on the dynamic responses of the beams are also investigated in detail and highlighted.

The equivalent vehicle load factors which can consider the concentrated wheel load effect in slab design of parking garage structure are proposed. Based on the standard vehicle with total weight of 2.4 ton which is designed through the investigation of small to medium vehicle produced in Korea and the review of numerous foreign design codes for parking garage structure, the effects of moving vehicle loads on slab are analyzed using the finite element method. Besides. the relationships between the equivalent load factors and the sectional dimensions are established by regression analysis. The calculation of design forces can be easily accomplished without taking sophisticated numerical analysis for the moving vehicle load as the results obtained to the distributed load are multiplied by the proposed load factors in practice.
The experiments for aerodynamic characteristics of railway acoustic screen are performed using 1/61 scaled-down moving model rig facility which employs an axis symmetry and one wire guidance method. The launching mechanism is an air-gun type. The train model for the experiment is the high speed train (Korea Train Express: KTX) and the tested speed is about 300 km/h. The tested train length is 61 em which is corresponding to two units of KTX train. The cross sectional area and weight of train model are 0.00264 $m^2$ and 287 g, respectively. The Reynolds number based on the model train length is $1.2{\times}10^7$. The strength of pressure wave is measured using piezo typed pressure sensor. The measured pick value of pressure was as high as 365 Pa in the shortest gap between the acoustic screen and model train. The measured pressure is well compared with the field test data of mc 779-1 [2] values. However, the experimental data were slightly lower than the mc 779-1 values. The results show the model test can be used as a substitute for the field test.

An understanding of the natural frequencies of a beam is virtually a prerequisite to the understanding of its response in forced vibration due to shock, ground acceleration or moving loads. Contrary to the frequencies of the prismatic bars with arbitrary boundary conditions, those of a tapered bar are hard to determine when one employs convevtional neutral equilibrium or energy method. In this paper, finite element method is adopted to determine the fundamental frequencies of the non-symmetrically tapered bars. The bars assume the shapes of straight lines along the axis. The parameters considered in this study are sectional parameter, m,n and taper parameter, $\alpha$ For the structural engineer's convenience, the results by finite element method are expressed by simple algebraic equations, by which first mode frequencies are easily estimated. And they agree fairy well with those by F.E.M in most cases.
The ship wave phenomena in the restricted waterway were investigated by a numerical analysis. The Euler and continuity equations were employed for the present study. The boundary fitted and moving grid system was adopted to enhance the computational efficiency. The convective terms in the governing equations and the kinematic free surface boundary condition were solved by the Constrained Interpolated Profile (CIP) algorithm in order to solve accurately wave heights in far field as well as near field. The advantage of the CIP method was verified by the comparison of the computed results by the CIP and the Maker and Cell (MAC) method. The free surface flow simulation around Wigley hull was performed and compared with the experiment for the sake of the validation of the numerical method. The present numerical scheme was applied to the free surface simulation for various canal sections in order to understand the effect of the sectional shape of waterways on the ship waves. The wave heights on the side wall and the shape of the wave patterns with their characteristics of flow are discussed.

A Digital X-ray imaging system using Compton backscattering has been developed to obtain a cross-sectional profile and mass loss of corroded lap-splices of aging aircraft from density variation. A slit-type camera was designed to focus on a small scattering volume inside the material, from which the backscattered photons are collected by a collimated scintillator detector for interpretation of material characteristics. The cross section of the lap-joint is scanned by moving the scattering volume through the thickness direction of the specimen. The mass loss of each layer has been estimated from a Compton backscatter A-scan to obtain the thickness of each layer including the aluminum sheet, the corrosion layer and the sealant. Quantitative information such as location and width of planar corrosion in the lap splices of fuselages is obtained by deconvolution using a nonlinear least-square error minimization method(BFGS method): A simple reconstruction model is also introduced to overcome distortion of the Compton backscatter data due to attenuation effects attributed to beam hardening and quantum noise.
In this paper, auto focus actuator, which is used to move a lens module in the mobile phone having a camera module, is developed. Camera module containing auto focus actuator requires to minimize total size because of characteristics of the application area such as mobile phone, digital camera, and personal digital assistant. There are stepping motor, voice coil motor, and piezoelectric motor as auto focus actuator. In this paper, voice coil motor having new electromagnetic configuration is proposed. And actuator using proposed voice coil motor is developed by optimal design method using magnetic circuit analysis. The sectional area of the developed actuator is reduced to 32.4% compared with actuator using general electromagnetic configuration. From the performance test, the developed actuator has moving stroke of 0.64 mm for 2.1 volt, hysteresis of 40 $\mu$m, full stroke current of 54 mA, and unit step motion of 3 $\mu$m.
