  • Turbulent flows around two-dimensional wing sections in ground effect are analysed by incompressible RANS equations and a finite difference method. The Baldwin-Lomax algebraic turbulence model is used to simulate high Reynolds number flows. The main purpose of this study is to clarify the two-dimensional ground effect and its flow characteristics due to different ground boundary conditions, i.e., moving and fixed bottom boundary. As a first step, to validate the present numerical code, the computational result of Clark-Y(t/C 11.7%) is compared with published numerical results and experimental data. Then, NACA4412 section in ground effect is calculated for various ground clearances with two bottom boundary conditions. According to the computational results, the difference in the lift and moment simulated with the two bottom boundary conditions is negligible, but the drag force simulated by the fixed bottom is to some extent smaller than that by the moving bottom. Therefore, it can be concluded that the drag force measured in a wind tunnel with the fixed bottom could be smaller than that with the moving bottom.

  • This article discusses the dynamic response of Bernoulli-Euler straight beam with angular elastic supports subjected to moving load with variable velocity. A new engineering approach for determination of the dynamic effect from the moving load on the stressed and strained state of the beam has been developed. A dynamic coefficient, a ratio of the dynamic to the static deflection of the beam, has been defined on the base of an infinite geometrical absolutely summable series. Generalization of the R. Willis' equation has been carried out: generalized boundary conditions have been introduced; the generalized elastic curve's equation on the base of infinite trigonometric series method has been obtained; the forces of inertia from normal and Coriolis accelerations and reduced beam mass have been taken into account. The influence of the boundary conditions and kinematic characteristics of the moving load on the dynamic coefficient has been investigated. As a result, the dynamic stressed and strained state has been obtained as a multiplication of the static one with the dynamic coefficient. The developed approach has been compared with a finite element one for a concrete engineering case and thus its authenticity has been proved.

  • The dynamic instability and natural frequency of axially moving beam with an attached mass are investigated. Thus, the effects of an attached mass on the stability of the moving beam are studied. The governing equation of motion of the moving beam with an attached mass is derived from the extended Hamilton's principle. The natural frequencies are investigated for the moving beams via the Galerkin method under the simple support boundary. Numerical examples show the effects of the attached mass and moving speed on the stability of moving beam. Moreover, the lowest critical moving speeds for the simple supported conditions have been presented. The results can be used in the analysis of axially moving beams with an attached mass for checking the stability.

  • In this paper, the dynamic behaviour of an inclined functionally graded material (FGM) beam with different boundary conditions under a moving mass is investigated based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The material properties vary continuously along the beam thickness based on the power-law distribution. The system of motion equations is derived by using Hamilton's principle. The finite element method (FEM) is adopted to develop a general solution procedure. The moving mass is considered on the top surface of the beam instead of supposing it on the mid-plane. In order to consider the Coriolis, centrifugal accelerations and the friction force, the contact force method is used. Moreover, the effects of boundary conditions, the moving mass velocity and various material distributions are studied. For verification of the present results, a comparative fundamental frequency analysis of an FGM beam is conducted and the dynamic transverse displacements of the homogeneous and FGM beams traversed by a moving mass are compared with those in the existing literature. There is a good accord in all compared cases. In this study for the first time in dynamic analysis of the inclined FGM beams, the Coriolis and centrifugal accelerations of the moving mass are taken into account, and it is observed that these accelerations can be ignored for the low-speeds of the moving mass. The new provided results for dynamics of the inclined FGM beams traversed by a moving mass can be significant for the scientific and engineering community in the area of FGM structures.

  • In this study, the absorbing boundary condition was adopted to prevent elastic wave propagation due to abrupt load condition changes in moving force analysis. It was proven to be effective in reducing inappropriate noise components. Furthermore, to verify whether fixed point excitation in a laboratory test can simulate train movement effectively, the results of dynamic analysis for fixed point excitation and moving force conditions were analyzed. The dynamic stability of an asphalt track structure under a KTX train condition was also studied. Additionally, the dynamic safety of asphalt tracks was verified by comparing the results of a moving force analysis under a KTX train load and a quasi-static analysis under the design standard Korean train load.

  • This paper presents a highly efficient moving least squares finite difference method (MLS FDM) for a heat transfer problem of bi-material with interfacial boundary. The MLS FDM directly discretizes governing differential equations based on a node set without a grid structure. In the method, difference equations are constructed by the Taylor polynomial expanded by moving least squares method. The wedge function is designed on the concept of hyperplane function and is embedded in the derivative approximation formula on the moving least squares sense. Thus interfacial singular behavior like normal derivative jump is naturally modeled and the merit of MLS FDM in fast derivative computation is assured. Numerical experiments for heat transfer problem of bi-material with different heat conductivities show that the developed method achieves high efficiency as well as good accuracy in interface problems.

  • This paper presents the computational method for analyzing the compressible flow fields in a high voltage gas circuit breaker. There are many difficult problems in analyzing the gas flow in GCB due to complex geometry, moving boundary, shock wave and so on. In particular, the distortion problem of the grid due to the movement of moving parts can be worked out by the fixed grid technique. Numerical simulations are based on a fully implicit finite volume method of the compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations to obtain the pressure, density, and velocity through the entire interruption process. The presented method is applied to the real circuit breaker model and the pressure in front of the piston is good agreement with the experimental one.

  • The objective of this research is to estimate two dimensional ablating and charring of heat shield materials in severe aero-thermal heat transfer. This estimation requires an accurate and rapid technique for its serious heat transfer with a moving boundary. Aerodynamic heating is obtained by an explicit relation which is a function of Mach number and air condition, while a fully implicit method is used for heat transfer calculations. Moving boundary is captured by FLIAR method which is a subgroup of VOF. Thickness of ablating and charring of heat shield, temperature of the moving surface and rate of radiation heat are calculated and compared with references. The results are in good agreement with other calculations.

  • The control objectives in this paper are to move the gantry of a container crane to its target position and to suppress the transverse vibration of the payload. The crane system is modeled as an axially moving nonlinear string equation, in which control inputs are applied at both ends, through the gantry and the payload. The dynamics of the moving string are derived using Hamilton's principle. The Lyapunov function method is used in deriving a boundary control law, in which the Lyapunov function candidate is introduced from the total mechanical energy of the system. The performance of the proposed control law is compared with other two control algorithms available in the literature. Experimental results are given.
