  • An efficient location management for mobile stations plays an important role in mobile communication network. This paper studies a movement-based registration(MBR) method with a selective paging scheme. In the movement-based registration method, a mobile station performs a location registration when the number of cell boundary crossings since the last registration equals to the given movement threshold. In the selective paging scheme, the network first partitions the location area of the called mobile station into a number of subareas and then pages each subarea one after another until the MS is found. To reduce the paging and registration load, we propose a modified MBR(MMBR) method in the aspect of minimization of signaling traffic on radio channels. First, we propose a new establishment of the paging area to reduce the paging load on radio channels and then analyze its effects. Next, we propose the MMBR to reduce the registration load. Numerical results show that our proposed movement-based registration provides the better performance compared with the conventional method.

  • In this study, we consider the movement-based registration (MBR), location-based registration (LBR) and distance-based registration (DBR) schemes. Analytical models based on a 2-dimensional random walk in a hexagonal cell configuration are considered to analyze and compare the performances of these three schemes. We focus on the derivation of the registration costs of LBR and DBR using an analytical method and then show that DBR always outperforms both MBR and LBR. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the validity of our models under various circumstances.

  • This study considers movement-based registration (MBR). In MBR, a mobile station (MS) performs location registration whenever the number of entering cells reaches the specified movement threshold M. MBR is simple and its implementation is quite straightforward. However, it may result in more registrations than other similar schemes. An improved MBR scheme called MBIR (MBR with implicit registration) was proposed to reduce registration cost of MBR and its approximated performance was analyzed. In this study, we point out some problems of the previous analysis method and propose an exact analysis method of MBIR. Using the exact analysis method, we show that the previous analysis includes considerable errors and improvement of MBIR in our study seems to be larger than in the previous study.

  • An efficient mobility management for mobile stations plays an important role in mobile communication networks. In this paper, we intend to improve the performance of the movement-based location update scheme which is simple to implement and shows good performance. The basic idea used in the proposed location update scheme is to avoid the location update if the mobile subscriber moves around the cell where the last location update was performed. This Is made possible by utilizing the simple movement history information. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated and compared with the movement-based location update scheme through simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed location update scheme provides the better performance compared with the movement-based location update scheme by minimizing the unnecessary location updates.

  • The skin movement artifacts are referred to as the relative motion of skin with respect to the motion of underlying bones. This is of great importance in joint biomechanics or internal kinematics of human body. This paper describes a novel experiment that measures the skin movement of a hand based on MR(magnetic resonance) images in conjunction with surface modeling techniques. The proposed approach consists of 3 phases: (1) MR scanning of a hand with surface makers, (2) 3D reconstruction from the MR images, and (3) registration of the 3D models. The MR images of the hand are captured by 3 different postures. And the surface makers which are attached to the skin are employed to trace the skin motion. After reconstruction of 3D models from the scanned MR images, the global registration is applied to the 3D models based on the particular bone shape of different postures. The results of registration are then used to trace the skin movement by measuring the positions of the surface markers.

  • This paper describes a novel experiment that measures skin movement with respect to the flexional motion of a hand. The study was based on MR images in conjunction with CAD techniques. The MR images of the hand were captured in 3 different postures with surface markers. The surface markers attached to the skin where employed to trace skin movement during the flexional motion of the hand. After reconstructing 3D isosurfaces from the segmented MR images, the global registration was applied to the 3D models based on the particular bone shape of different postures. Skin movement was interpreted by measuring the centers of the surface markers in the registered models.
