Vegetation of the Khogno Khan Natural Reserve, Mongolia

  • The vegetation of the Khogno Khan Natural Reserve of the central Mongolia was studied in terms of the Zurich-Montpellier School's method. Twenty plant communities were identified from the three different landscape types such as mountain areas(63%), plains(32%), and wetlands(5%). Actual vegetation map using five vegetation domains was accomplished in order to understand the spatial distribution of regional vegetation. Steppe vegetation of 88% vegetation cover to the whole area is representative, which is composed of a matrix of landscape. The birch-aspen forests and the elm bush forests are relics as a patch distribution. It is recognized that the whole territory of protected area be under the effects of severe grazing from the phytosociological viewpoint.

Distribution of five rare plants in Korea

  • The natural habitats and distribution of five rare plants were recently discovered in Korea. Salomonia oblongifolia DC., which grows in mountain wetlands, was found in Gijang-gun, Busan, Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, and Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do. Glaux maritima var. obtusifolia Fernald, which grows along the coast, was found in Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do, Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Buk-gu, Ulsan. Tillaea aquatica L. and Limosella aquatica L., which was previously not known to be present in Korea, were discovered in Gijang-gun, Busan for the first time. Apocynum lancifolium Russanov, which has a narrow distribution range in Korea, was also found in Samcheok-si, Gangwon-do, Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do, Siheung-si, Gyeonggi-do, Jung-gu, Incheon, Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do.

Development of Digital Terrain Analysis for an Identification of Wetland Area at Mountainous Watershed (산지습지의 수문지형분석 방법론의 개발)

  • In this study, a digital terrain analysis had been performed for a mountainous watershed having wetlands. In order to consider the impact for wetland in the flow determination algorithm, the Laplace equation is implemented into the upslope accounting algorithm of wetness computation scheme. The computational algorithm of wetland to spatial contribution of downslope area and wetness was also developed to evaluate spatially distributed runoff due to the presence of wetland. Developed schemes were applied to Wangpichun watershed located Chuncuk mountain at Ulzingun, South Korea. Both spatial distribution of wetness and its histogram indicate that the developed scheme provides feasible consideration of wetland impact in spatial hydrologic analysis. The impact of wetland to downslope propagation pattern is also useful to evaluate spatially distributed runoff distribution.

Polyphenism by the level of predation risk in larval salamander, Hynobius leechii (포식압 수준에 따른 한국산 도롱뇽 유생의 표현형의 변화)

  • This study examined the cannibalistic polyphenism of larval salamander Hynobius leechii by the level of predation risk. Salamander eggs were collected from three regions (Mountain Inwang, Mountain Surak and Gwangju). Eggs were treated by three different risk conditions: (1) high risk, predation risk three times a day; (2) medium risk, predation risk once a day; and (3) low risk, no predation risk. Predation risk was conducted using a chemical cue from Chinese minnows. The chemical cue treatment started from the day of collection and ended one week after hatching. Post-treatment measurements were head width at the level of the eyes (HWE), largest head width (LHW), and Snout-vent length of the each larva. To compare the morphological change according to the predation risk, we modified the two head size, HWE and LHW, to HWE/LHW. A significant difference in HWE/LHW and snout-vent length was evident according to the level of predation risk. And larval mortality was increase by the predation risk. The results indicate that predation risk can cause cannibalistic polyphenism of larval salamander and this morphological change could influence larval mortality.

Evaluation of the Applicability of Major Domestic and International Forest fire indices: A Case Study in the Eastern Region of the Taebaek Mountain Range (국내외 주요 산불위험지수의 국내 적용성 평가: 태백산맥 동쪽 지역을 대상으로)

  • In this study, we evaluate the applicability of domestic and international forest fire indices in Korea. To accomplish this objective, we first compare the structures of widely-used forest fire indices worldwide. Then, the application results of these forest fire indices are evaluated by comparing them with the annual and seasonal variations in actual forest fire occurrences in Korea. Finally, we select indices suitable for domestic application and propose directions to improve their appropriate applicabilities. The considered forest fire indices include MI, KBDI, FFWI, and mFFWI developed in the United States, NI, ZhI, and MNI developed in Russia, and DWI developed in Korea. This study considers the East Coast region as a study area, and the number of forest fire occurrences is referenced from the forestry statistics yearbook provided by the Korea Forest Service. As results, first, most forest fire indices do not adequately reproduce the actual annual forest fire occurrences as its variation is so small. However, most indices are found to effectively represent the monthly variations. Based on the correlation analysis between forest fire indices and actual forest fire occurrences, mFFWI, MI, ZhI, and DWI are selected as suitable indices for the East Coast region. However, these indices are still not satisfactory to adequately represent the forest fire occurrences in Korea, suggesting the need for further improvements. Each index has its own different aspects to be improved and, therefore, evaluation of these indices may be available only after further improvements are completed.

Potential damage assessment of inland wetlands by topsoil erosion (표토침식에 따른 내륙습지 훼손 가능성 평가)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a quantitative assessment of wetland damage considering the effects of topsoil erosion and deposition from rainfall. In the Cheoncheon Basin located upstream of the Yongdam Dam, 16 wetlands are located, but the lacustrine and small palustrine wetland were analyzed for possible damage to erosion and deposition. As a result of applying typhoon events in 2002 and 2003, the sediment load from the upper basin was the highest at 2.30% (22,548 ㎥) of low water capacity. The average sediment load in the mountain areas was found to be 0.03% of the low water capacity, and it was analyzed to be less damaging than the lacustrine with relatively large watershed. as a result of the model, the lacustrine wetland, where a large area is used as agricultural land, shows a high probability of sediment yield, so it is highly likely to damage the wetland by topsoil erosion.

A Study on Geotop Classification and Geodiversity in Mt. Jeombong Experimental Forest (점봉산 시험림 지역의 지오톱 분류와 지형다양성 연구)

  • This study was carried out to suggest fundamental concepts and data ideas for biodiversity and confrontation strategy on global environmental changes by analyzing geomorphic milieu and geotop in Mt. Jeombong experimental forest. Elements of landform were classified as landform sets by scale. Scale for classification could be decide on four categories. We could classify landforms which scale zero is seven elements, scale one is twelve elements, scale two is fifteen elements, scale three is twenty nine elements. Especially mountain wetlands were classed as valley and channel types in Mt. Jeombong. Geotop by clustering methods could be four spatial units as 2, 3, 5, and 7 classes, and analyzed geodiversity as landform sets for explanation of vegetation distribution. Rate of rise of temperature was $0.031^{\circ}C$ per year, change ratio was increased $1.25^{\circ}C$, and also precipitation was increased 320mm during forty year(from year 1973 to year 2012). The result of this research can be affordable to provide information for forest management of mountainous areas.

Role and Distribution of Freshwater Algae at the Wangdeungjae Wetland in Mt. Jiri (지리산 왕등재습지의 담수조류의 분포와 역할)

  • The role and distribution of fresh water algae was surveyed at Wangdeungjae Wetland of Mt. Jiri, a high mountain swampy land. Mean environmental factors were as follows; temperature was $17.6^{\circ}C$, pH was 6.3, conductivity was $24.6{\mu}S/cm$, TN was 0.6 mg/L, TP was 0.09 mg/L, and Chl-a was $11.9{\mu}g/L$, respectively. Algae were appeared 159 species(Chlorophyta 87, Bacillariophyta 56, Euglenophyta 11, and Cyanophyta 5). Desmid of Chlorophyta was 56 species, and dominant species was Aulacoseira distans of Bacillariophyta. To analyze food chain of the water ecosystem, we performed analysis of tadpole's stomach captured in the wetland. Tadpoles ingested mainly algae, and Aulacoseira distans was found in most quantity. Based on this study, algae take role of the primary producer as well as the prey of higher level predators(e.g. tadpoles) in the water ecosystem of Wangdeungjae Wetland.

Plant Community Structure from the Jilmoi Wetlands to the Donghae Observatory, Baekdudaegan Mountains

  • This study aims to investigate the characteristics of the vegetation structure in the sectin stretching between the Jilmoi wetlands and the Donghae Observatory and to set the criteria for the basic data for a management plan including restoration afterwards. 12 plots($10m{\times}40m$, $20m{\times}20m$) were set up to analyse the vegetation structure. The analysis of the classification by TWINSPAN and ordination by DCA, importance percentage and property, distribution of diameter of breast height, growth increments of major woody species, species diversity and the physicochemical properties of soil were all analyzed. Vegetation classes were divided into 3 communities, which are community I (Pinus densiflora community), community II (Quercus mongolica community) and community III (Quercus mongolica-Tilia amurensis community). The P. densiflora community declined when competing with Q. mongolica and Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Q. mongolica competed with T. amurensis on an understory layer in Q. mongolica community. Q. mongolica competed with T. amurensis on both canopy and understory layers in Q. mongolica-T. amurensis community. P. densiflora declined and it was assumed to succeed to F. rhynchophylla or T. amurensis through Q. mongolica based on the importance percentage and distribution of the diameter of the breast height of small and middle sized trees. The age of P. densiflora was between 47 to 51 years old and Q. mongolica was 61years old. T. amurensis was 61 years old and the growth of Q. mongolica slowed a little. As the result of Shannon's index of species diversity, community I ranged from 0.9578 to 1.1862, community II ranged from 0.7904 to 1.2286 and community III ranged from 0.8701 to 1.0323. The contents of organic matter and cation were low compared to uncultivated mountain soil and it were analysed to be inappropriate for tree growth.

Management Methods and Vegetation in a Windbreak Forest around the Coast of Gwanmaedo, Jindo-gun, Jeonnam (전남 진도군 관매도 해안 방풍림의 식생과 관리방안)

  • This study examined the characteristics of Pinus thunbergii community that forms a windbreak forest around the coast of Gwanmaedo located in Jodo-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeollanamdo which is located in the south-western areas of Korea from December 2005 to April 2007 and to suggeste the ecological management methods of coastal windbreak areas. P. thunbergii community, a coastal windbreak forest of Gwanmaedo, was classified into disturbance, growth, mixture, stability, and back mountain vegetation according to major companions species and vegetation types. P. thunbergii community of disturbance and growth vegetation needs active management through tree thinning, mowing, weeding out, use of rest space, and felling sick pine trees. P. thunbergii community of mixture, stability, and back mountain vegetation needs active preservation of a coastal windbreak to restore natural vegetation by making a windbreak walk and a forest buffer zone and inducing vegetation succession. Accordingly, in this study, ecological management methods were suggested according to the actual state of distribution by habitat characteristics of coastal windbreak areas such as management of beaches and surrounding area of idle lands, restoration of back wetlands, inhibition of foreign plants, maintenance of diversity of species and habitats, and prevention of aging and spread of damage from insects.
