Applicability of the digital instrument to improve the reproducibility of motor unit number index

  • Background: The motor unit number index (MUNIX) and motor unit size index (MUSIX) refer to the electrophysiological measurement of the motor units using the surface electromyographic interference pattern (SIP) recorded during graded muscle contraction. In order to improve the reliability and reproducibility of MUNIX by the systematization of the graded muscle contractions, we applied a digital hand instrument to the procedure of recording SIP signals. Methods: We tested the applicability of the digital instrument in the MUNIX technique by assessing the mean values and the reproducibility of the MUNIX involving the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) and the abductor digiti minimi (ADM) muscles in 30 healthy adults. Results: The digital dynamometer was successfully applied to the MUNIX measurements of the APB and ADM muscles, and showed high reproducibility across trials. Conclusions: Application of the digital instrument would be useful in improving the reliability and reproducibility of MUNIX.

Development of Traction Unit for 2-motor Driven Electric Vehicle

  • This paper describes a development of traction unit for 2-motor driven electric vehicle (EV). The traction unit is consisted with an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), a reduction gear and an inverter for electric vehicle that is driven by 2 motors without differential gear. For traction unit, prototype IPMSM and inverter have been developed. The IPMSM was designed by CAD program that was developed with both equivalent circuit method and FEM. Also the inverter was developed to drive 2 motors with 6 legs IGBT switches in a control board. The vector control algorithm was implemented with maximum torque control method in the constant torque region and field weakening control method in the constant power region considering inverter capacity. To verify that the traction unit is more high efficiency and has more high power density than a traction unit with induction motor with the same power, we would like to show the results about the design and analysis of the IPMSM and the experiment results about the traction unit.

  • A simple fault correction method for rotor position detection of a brushless DC(BLDC) motor with trapezoidal back EMF(electromotive force) using a Hall effect latch unit is presented. The reason why the Hall effect latch unit does not operate properly during the startup of a BLDC motor is thoroughly explained. To solve this problem, a simple code change method and its hardware implementation issues are proposed and discussed.

  • Imported vane type air motor and-piece is used widely in the domestic dental services. The imported hand-pieces are more than 90 percent in the domestic market. The air-motor unit of the hand-piece had not been developed inside of the country yet. Therefore it needs some research works. Purpose of this study is to design the air motor of the hand-piece for better performance. The geometry of the air-motor is based on product of NSK Company. The airflow of the air motor unit is simulated by Computational Fluid Dynamics. The performance analysis of the air motor units is investigated. ANSYS 12.0 CFX is used to analysis of the flowfield. Torque changes depends on spin calculated by the immersed solid method.

  • The real time simulator for testing the high power inverter unit of a PM synchronous motor is proposed. The power converter of the real time simulator can replaces the dynamo test equipment that consists of a PMSM(PM synchronous motor) and load unit. It is verified by the simulation that the real time simulator has a similar electrical and mechanical characteristics of the PM synchronous motor.

신경근육 접합부의 종판 폭과 분포에 따른 운동단위 수의 추정에 관한 연구 (A Study on Estimation of Numbers of Motor Unit related to the Widths and Distribution of Endplate in Neuromuscular Junction)

  • 본 논문에서는 표면 근전도(surface electromyogram : SEMG)와 근육모델링을 이용하여 신경근육 접합부(neuromuscular junction, NMJ)의 종판(end plate) 폭(widths)과 분포(distribution)에 따른 운동단위(motor unit, MU)수를 추정하는 새로운 방법을 제안하였다. 이를 위하여 MU-시뮬레이터(motor unit simulator)와 EPZ-시뮬레이터(end plate zone simulator)를 설계하고, 본 연구에서 제안된 방법과 기존방법들을 비교하였다. 제안된 MU-시뮬레이터로 시뮬레이션 된 SMUAP(single motor unit action potential : 단일운동단위활동전위)와 CMAP(compound muscle action potential : 복합근활동전위)은 검출된 근신호와 유사하였다. EPZ-시뮬레이터는 신경근육 접합부의 종판 폭과 분포를 바꾸어 가면서 운동단위수를 추정하기 위하여 설계하였다. 실험결과 운동단위 수는 약 450 개, 근섬유수 약 340 개, 종판 폭은 약 6 mm이고, 종판분포는 불규칙하게 분포된 것 (randomly distributed)으로 추정되었다. 본 연구에서 제안된 방법은 인간 근육의 생체조직검사로 측정한 운동단위의 수와 비교 가능한 결과가 나왔다.

  • In this study, we present a novel method for estimating the information of MU(motor unit) which is the basic element of human muscle by using surface EMG. Some of the method developed in this field could only estimate the numbers of MU that is activated. However, in our study the MU-simulator based on the line source model was designed to estimate the MU information including the numbers of MU and muscle fiber, conduction velocity, MU diameter, fiber diameter, and end plate position. The SMUAP(single motor unit action potential) detector was designed and CMAP(compound muscle action potential) by electrical stimulus was recorded. With these data, the MU-simulator can estimate the MU information by varying muscle paramater settings through MSE(mean square error) method. Our results shows that the proposed method can be comparable with the method of anatomical studies. Moreover, our system can be utilized to build a tool for diagnosis and treatment assessment of neuromuscular patients.

기능적전기자극을 이용한 보행훈련이 편마비 환자의 하퇴근육의 근전위활동에 미치는 영향 (Influence of Functional Electrical Stimulation during Gait Training on Motor Unit Action Potential)

  • This study divided 35 hemiplegia patients into control group having standard physical therapy and gait training and functional electrical stimulation(FES) group using FES during gait training in order to examine the effects of applying FES to ankle joint dorsiflexor on motor unit action potential. Stimulation conditions of FES were pulse rate 35 pps, pulse width $250{\mu}s$, and on-time 0.3 second, treatment hour was 30 min. and treatment period was once a day for five days a week through six weeks. For functional evaluations before and after treatment, root mean square(RMS) were measured and the following conclusions were obtained. : In RMS analysis of motor unit action potential, gastrocnemius was significantly reduced in both weight bearing(p<.001) and bearing condition (p<.05). In conclusion, application of FES to hemiplegia patients in recovery stage during gait training decreased RMS and it was interpreted that it was caused by mitigation of muscular spasticity by reduction of motor unit.

  • Fundamental positioning characteristics of a dual-axis Sawyer linear motor are described. The Sawyer motor is capable of high positional accuracy. An electronic control unit of the motor whose velocity is proportional to the frequency of the electric current was produced in our laboratory. The positioning system was constructed using two Sawyer motors, an air bearings suspension unit and an electronic control unit. The stable motion of the motor was confirmed on the open loop operation. The adjustable operating conditions were the live load of 1 kg, the maximum acceleration of 1.2G and the maximum velocity of 350 mm/s. Absolute positioning accuracy was improved within .+-.5.mu.m, on microstep operating conditions of dividing one pitch of 508.mu.m into 508 steps. The following two conclusions were obtained. An accelerating-cruising-decelerating control is effective for reduction in the travel time required. Also, microstep operation is effective for improving the resolution of position.

  • An intelligent mulitiple monitoring system to monitor tool/machining states synthetically was proposed and developed. It consists of 2 fundamental subsystems : the multiple sensor detection unit and the intellignet integrated diagnosis unit. Three signals, that is, spindle motor current, Z-axis motor current, and machining sound were adopted to detect tool/machining states more reliably. Based on the multiple sensor information, the diagnosis unit judges either tool breakage or degree of tool wear state using fuzzy reasoning. Tool breakage is diagnosed by the level of spindle/z-axis motor current. Tool wear is diagnosed by both the result of fuzzy pattern recognition for motor currents and the result of pattern matching for machining sound. Fuzzy c-means algorithm was used for fuzzy pattern recognition. Experiments carried out for drill operation in the machining center have shown that the developed system monitors abnormal drill/states drilling very reliably.
