The Influences of Inquiry Learning-Based Analogical Experiments on Experimental Design Processes of Science-Gifted Students (비유 실험을 활용한 탐구학습이 과학영재의 실험설계 과정에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, we developed analogical experimental activities to foster scientific creativity in inquiry learning and applied them to 7th grade science-gifted students. The influences of inquiry learning-based analogical experiments were investigated with respect to the experimental design processes. We classified the patterns of experimental design processes by creative thinking processes and analyzed performance levels by the elements of experimental design processes. The students' experimental design processes were categorized into three kinds of patterns such as reinitiated motion, backward-divergent motion and stationary motion. Those belonging to the reinitiated motion performed precise experimental design from new perspectives by identifying the mapping in depth and considering the elements of experimental design processes. In the case of the backward-divergent motion, they shifted their positions to new directions, but the concreteness of experimental design was insufficient due to the lack of mapping or considering the elements. In the type of stationary motion, maintaining their previous positions, they showed less performance of experimental design without considering the elements sufficiently. Educational implication of these findings are discussed.

Boundary Depth Estimation Using Hough Transform and Focus Measure (허프 변환과 초점정보를 이용한 경계면 깊이 추정)

  • Depth estimation is often required for robot vision, 3D modeling, and motion control. Previous method is based on the focus measures which are calculated for a series of image by a single camera at different distance between and object. This method, however, has disadvantage of taking a long time for calculating the focus measure since the mask operation is performed for every pixel in the image. In this paper, we estimates the depth by using the focus measure of the boundary pixels located between the objects in order to minimize the depth estimate time. To detect the boundary of an object consisting of a straight line and a circle, we use the Hough transform and estimate the depth by using the focus measure. We performed various experiments for PCB images and obtained more effective depth estimation results than previous ones.

An Experimental Study on the Effects of Perforated Floating Structures and Submerged Plates for Wave Control and Motion Reduction of Pile-Moored Floating Piers (말뚝계류 부잔교의 파랑제어 및 동요저감을 위한 유공구조 부유체와 몰수판 효과에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The floating pier is a representative type of floating structure installed along the coast, primarily used as a facility for berthing and mooring ships. Additionally, ongoing attempts have been made to utilize it for various purposes, such as wave control and wave energy conversion structures. In this study, we experimentally investigated the reflection and motion characteristics of a pile-moored floating pier, which allows heave and limited roll motion, with respect to the presence of perforated structures and the attachment of submerged plates. The hydraulic experiment results indicated that the reflection and motion characteristics of the pile-moored floating pier were significantly influenced by the presence and installation depth of the submerged plates, rather than the presence of perforated structures on the floating body. In particular, the installation of submerged plates increased the reflection coefficient in short-period waves and effectively reduced the heave and roll motions of the floating body.

  • This study presents an investigation into the ways to detect the areas of object movement with Kinect's Depth Frame, which is capable of receiving 3D information regardless of external light sources. Applied to remove noises along the boundaries of objects among the depth information received from sensors were the blurring technique for the x and y coordinates of pixels and the frequency filter for the z coordinate. In addition, a clustering filter was applied according to the changing amounts of adjacent pixels to extract the areas of moving objects. It was also designed to detect fast movements above the standard according to filter settings, being applicable to mobile robots. Detected movements can be applied to security systems when being delivered to distant places via a network and can also be expanded to large-scale data through concerned information.

  • 'Gesture' except for voice is the most intuitive means of communication. Thus, many researches on how to control computer using gesture are in progress. User detection and tracking in these studies is one of the most important processes. Conventional 2D object detection and tracking methods are sensitive to changes in the environment or lights, and a mix of 2D and 3D information methods has the disadvantage of a lot of computational complexity. In addition, using conventional 3D information methods can not segment similar depth object. In this paper, we propose object detection and tracking method using Depth Projection Map that is the cumulative value of the depth and motion information. Simulation results show that our method is robust to changes in lighting or environment, and has faster operation speed, and can work well for detection and tracking of similar depth objects.

  • Circulation in the Jinhae Bay in the southern sea of Korea is examined using the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) with a free surface in a sigma coordinate, governed by primitive equations. The model well corresponds to the time series of the observed velocities at several layers obtained from a long-term mooring observation. In the residual velocity field of the model, persistent downward flow fields are formed along the central deep regions in the bay, and they are caused by bottom topographic effect. In addition, a comparison between a depth-averaged (2D) model and the POM is given, and a dependance of the results on bottom drag coefficient is also examined.

  • In this paper, a low-cost dynamic measurement system using the RGB-depth camera, Microsoft $Kinect^{(R)}$ v2, is proposed for measuring time-varying free surface motion of liquid dampers used in building vibration mitigation. Various experimental studies are conducted consecutively: performance evaluation and validation of the $Kinect^{(R)}$ v2, real-time monitoring using the $Kinect^{(R)}$ v2 SDK(software development kits), point cloud acquisition of liquid free surface in the 3D space, comparison with the existing video sensing technology. Utilizing the proposed $Kinect^{(R)}$ v2-based measurement system in this study, dynamic behavior of liquid in a laboratory-scaled small tank under a wide frequency range of input excitation is experimentally analyzed.

The Prediction of Hydrodynamic Forces Acting on Ship Hull in Laterally Berthing Maneuver Using CFD

  • To evaluate the unsteady motion in laterally berthing maneuver, it is necessary to grasp very clearly the magnitude and properties of the hydrodynamic forces acting on ship hull in shallow water. In this study, numerical calculation was made to investigate quantitatively the hydrodynamic force according to the water depth for Wigley model using the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique. Comparing the computational results to the experimental ones, the validity of the CFD method was verified. The numerical solutions evaluated the hydrodynamic force with good accuracy, and then captured the features of the flow field around the ship in detail. The transitional lateral force in a state ranging from rest to uniform motion is modeled by using the concept of the circulation.

A Deformation Model of a Bag-Finger Skirt and the Motion Response of an ACV in Waves

  • In this paper, the effect of a skirt deformation on the responses of an Air Cushion Vehicle in waves is investigated. The air in the bag and plenum chamber is assumed to be compressible and to have a uniform pressure distribution in each volume. The free surface deformation is determined in the framework of a linear potential theory by replacing the cushion pressure with the pressure patch which is oscillating and translating uniformly. And the bag-finger skirt assumed to be deformed due to the pressure disturbance while its surface area remained constant. The restoring force and moment due to the deformation of bag-finger skirt from equilibrium shape is incorporated with the equations of heave and pitch motions. The numerical results of motion responses due to various ratios of the bag and cushion pressure or bag-to-finger depth ratios are shown.

Analysis of Earthquake Response Data Recorded from the Hualien Large-Scale Seismic Test (Hualien 대형내진모델시험의 지진응답 계측데이타 분석)

  • A soil-structure interaction (SSI) experiment is being conducted in a seismically active region in Hualien, Taiwan. To obtain earthquake data for quantifying SSI effects and providing a basis to benchmark analysis methods, a 1/4-th scale cylindrical concrete containment model similar in shape to that of a nuclear power plant containment was constructed in the field where both the containment model and its surrounding soil, surface and sub-surface, are extensively instrumented to record earthquake data. In between September 1993 and May 1996, fifteen earthquakes with Richter magnitudes ranging from 4.2 to 6.2 were recorded. The recorded data were analyzed to provide information on the response characteristics of the Hualien soil-structure system, the SSI effects and the ground motion characteristics. The ground response data were analyzed for their variations with depth, with distance from the model structure, and at the same depths along downhole arrays. Variations of soil stiffness and soil-structure system frequencies were also evaluated against maximum ground motion. In addition, the site soil properties were derived based on correlation analysis of the recorded data and then correlated with those from the geotechnical investigation data.
