Our aim was to simulate ocean waves in a small-size wave flume and observe the motion of a cylindrical floating body placed in an offshore environment. To precisely visualize the oscillation of the body, a set of light-emitting diode illuminators and high-speed charge-coupled device camera were installed in the flume. Spectral analysis was performed of the movement of the floating body. The wave generator and absorbers worked well to simulate stable regular waves. As the period of the oncoming waves changed, the movement of the floating body substantially differed when tethered to a tension-leg mooring cable. In particular, when connected to the tension-leg mooring cable, the natural frequency of the floating body suddenly appeared at 0.391 Hz as the wave period was increased.

This paper focused on the application of finite element model updating technique to evaluate the structural properties of the reinforced concrete specimen using the data collected from shaking table tests. The specimen was subjected to six El Centro(NS, 1942) ground motion histories with different Peak Ground Acceleration(PGA) ranging from 0.06g to 0.50g. For model updating, flexural stiffness values of structural members(walls and slabs) were chosen as the updating parameters so that the converged results have direct physical interpretations. Initial values for finite element model were determined from the member dimensions and material properties. Frequency response functions(i.e. transfer functions), natural frequencies and mode shapes were obtained using the acceleration measurement at each floor and given ground acceleration history. The weighting factors were used to account for the relative confidence in different types of inputs for updating(i.e. transfer function and natural frequencies). The constraints based on upper/lower bound of parameters and sensitivity-based constraints were implemented to the updating procedure in this study using standard bounded variable least-squares(BVLS) method. The veracity of the updated finite element model was investigated by comparing the predicted and measured responses. The results indicated that the updated model replicates the dynamic behavior of the specimens reasonably well. At each stage of shaking, severity of damage that results from cracking of the reinforced concrete member was quantified from the updated parameters(i.e. flexural stiffness values).

Dynamic aeroelastic behavior of structurally nonlinear Joined Wings is presented. Three configurations, two characterized by a different location of the joint and one presenting a direct connection between the two wings (SensorCraft-like layout) are investigated. The snap-divergence is studied from a dynamic perspective in order to assess the real response of the configuration. The investigations also focus on the flutter occurrence (critical state) and postcritical phenomena. Limit Cycle Oscillations (LCOs) are observed, possibly followed by a loss of periodicity of the solution as speed is further increased. In some cases, it is also possible to ascertain the presence of period doubling (flip-) bifurcations. Differences between flutter (Hopf's bifurcation) speed evaluated with linear and nonlinear analyses are discussed in depth in order to understand if a linear (and thus computationally less intense) representation provides an acceptable estimate of the instability properties. Both frequency- and time-domain approaches are compared. Moreover, aerodynamic solvers based on the potential flow are critically examined. In particular, it is assessed in what measure more sophisticated aerodynamic and interface models impact the aeroelastic predictions. When the use of the tools gives different results, a physical interpretation of the leading mechanism generating the mismatch is provided. In particular, for PrandtlPlane-like configurations the aeroelastic response is very sensitive to the wake's shape. As a consequence, it is suggested that a more sophisticate modeling of the wake positively impacts the reliability of aerodynamic and aeroelastic analysis. For SensorCraft-like configurations some LCOs are characterized by a non-synchronous motion of the inner and outer portion of the lower wing: the wing's tip exhibits a small oscillation during the descending or ascending phase, whereas the mid-span station describes a sinusoidal-like trajectory in the time-domain.

Analytical and experimental studies show that the dynamic behavior of liquid storage tanks is significantly influenced by the fluid-structure interaction (FSI). The effects of FSI must be rigorously considered for accurate earthquake analysis and seismic design of liquid storage tanks. In this study, a dynamic analysis of a rectangular liquid storage tank subjected to bi-directional earthquake ground motions is performed and its dynamic characteristics are examined, with the effects of FSI rigorously considered. Hydrodynamic pressure is evaluated using the finite-element approach with acoustic elements and applied to the structure. The responses of the rectangular tank subjected to bi-directional earthquake ground motions are thus obtained. It can be observed that the incident angle of bi-directional horizontal ground motions has significant effects on the dynamic responses of the considered system. Therefore, the characteristics of the system must be considered in its seismic design and performance evaluation.

In this paper, a nonlinear finite element procedure is presented for the dynamic analysis of reinforced concrete shells. A computer program, named RCAHEST(reinforced concrete analysis in higher evaluation system technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. A 4-node flat shell element will drilling rotational stiffness is used for spatial discretization. The layered approach is used to discretize behavior of concrete and reinforcement through the thickness. Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. Solution of the equations of motion is obtained by numerical integration using Hilber-Hughes-Taylor(HHT) algorithm. The proposed numerical method for the nonlinear dynamic analysis of reinforced concrete shells is verified by comparison with reliable analytical results.

The purpose of this study is to prevent the unstable fracture at the FCA butt weldment of hatch coaming deck in the ultra large containership during service life. In order to do it, the behavior of the embedded crack at the weldment under design loading conditions was evaluated in accordance with BS7910. Here, the level of primary stress induced by ship motion was evaluated by the design code of classification society and FEA. The level of residual stress as secondary stress was calculated in consideration of the restraint degree of weldment and welding heat input by using the predictive equation proposed by authors in the previous study. The fatigue crack growth rate at the weldment was evaluated using CT specimen in accordance with ASTM E647. According to the results, although the allowable defect for embedded crack specified in the classification society exists at the weldment, the occurrence possibility of unstable fracture at the weldment could not be negligible, regardless of CTOD value given in this study. So, in this study, the effect of initial defect size, welding heat input, restraint degree and CTOD on the fracture mechanical characteristics of embedded crack at the weldment was evaluated by the comprehensive fracture assessment. Based on the results, the design criteria including allowable defect, residual stress level and CTOD value was established to prevent the unstable fracture at the FCA butt weldment of hatch coaming deck in an ultra large containership during service life of 20years.

We investigated the polarization retention characteristics of ferroelectric capacitors with $Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$ (PZT) thin films which were fabricated by different deposition methods. In thermally-accelerated retention tests, PZT films which were prepared by a chemical solution deposition (CSD) method showed rapid decay of retained polarization charges as the thickness of the films decreased down to 100 nm, while the films which were grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) retained relatively large non-volatile charges at the corresponding thickness. We concluded that in the CSD-grown films, the thicker interfacial passive layer compared with the MOCVD-grown films had an unfavorable effect on retention behavior. We observed the existence of such interfacial layers by extrapolation of the total capacitance with thickness of the films and the capacitance of these layers was larger in MOCVD-grown films than in CSD-grown films. Due to incomplete compensation of surface polarization charges by the free charges in the metal electrodes, the interfacial field activated the space charges inside the interfacial layers and deposited them at the boundary between the ferroelectric layer and the interfacial layer. Such space charges built up an internal field inside the films, which interfered with domain wall motion, so that retention property at last became degraded. We observed less imprint which was a result of less internal field in MOCVD-grown films while large imprint was observed in CSD-grown films.
In 2007, just after the recession of the Changma, anomalously long rainy period (from July 30 to August 15) occurred in Korea. To identify the cause of the sustained rainy period, we performed synoptic analysis and the associated air motions. The behavior of each air parcel trajectory associated with atmospheric motion was then investigated. As a result, three particular phenomena occurring at latitudes lower than $40^{\circ}N$ were discovered. First, a mass of relatively cold air, referred to as E, made a deep intrusion from $20^{\circ}N$ to $60^{\circ}N$. Second, this intrusion was accompanied by another mass of air called dE. It was colder and drier than E and originated from the mid-troposphere over the tropical ocean. Third, dE and E rotated clockwise three times over a period of 17 days over the Northwestern Pacific and blocked the westerly waves imbedded in the zonal flow from propagating. Two additional phenomena were observed at latitudes higher than $40^{\circ}N$. First, the cold core system, while approaching from the west with low geopotential values at its center, was stagnated over Shanxi China. It enhanced the northward intrusion of dE and E, and then diminished. The subsequent low system showed similar evolution as the first one. Second, a warm core anticyclone was formed over Lake Baikal, blocking the westerlies for 13 days and contributed to the persistent northward incursion of warm moist air. Moreover, a horizontally extended intrusion of upper level clouds from the tropics to $50^{\circ}N$, which may be interpreted as a tropical plume, was found around the end of the period (from August 12 to 15, 2007) with successive tropical nights over Korea.

In this article, the vibration behavior of double-bonded sandwich microplates with homogeneous core and nanocomposite facesheets reinforced by carbon nanotube and boron nitride nanotube under multi physical fields such as 2D magnetic and electric fields is investigated. Symmetric and un-symmetric distributions of nanotubes are considered for facesheets of sandwich microplates such as uniform distribution and various functionally graded distributions. The double-bonded sandwich microplates rest on visco-Pasternak foundation. Material properties of sandwich microplates are obtained by the extended rule of mixture. The sinusoidal shear deformation theory (SSDT) is employed to describe displacement fields of sandwich microplates. Also, the dimensionless natural frequency is obtained by classical plate theory (CPT) and compared with the obtained results by SSDT. It can be seen that the obtained dimensionless natural frequencies by CPT are higher than SSDT. In order to study the material length scale parameters, modified strain gradient theory at micro scale is utilized and then, the equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principle. The effects of different parameters such as foundation parameters including Winkler, shear layer and damping coefficients, various distributions and volume fraction of nanotubes, core to facesheet thickness ratio, aspect and side ratios on the dimensionless natural frequencies are discussed in details. The results of present work can be used to optimum design and control of similar systems such as micro-electro-mechanical and nano-electro-mechanical devices.
