The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among parent-adolescent communication, adolescents self-esteem, social development, and home environment. Home environment includes sex, father's vocations, mother's employments, parents educational level, and religions. 275 adolescents (186 males and 89 females students) were selected from middle schools in Seoul. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in parent-adolescent communication, adolescents self-esteem and social development according to environmental factors, such as parents' age, educational level, and religions. Also adolescents self-esteem was highly correlated with parent-adolescent communication, especially with mother-adolescent open communication. Finally, adolescent development of sociality was highly correlated with parent-adolescent communication, but not significant relationship with mother-adolescent reverse-functional communication.

Objectives : This study examined maternal object relations, child's and mother's perception on rearing attitude, and children's self-esteem in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and their mothers. Methods : 64 children with ADHD and their mothers were included in the study group. In the control group, there were 85 children and their mothers. Mothers completed the following tests : Bell object relation inventory (BORI), maternal behavior research instrument (MBRI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Korean ADHD Rating Scale (K-ARS). Children completed Children's Report of Parental Behavior Inventory (CRPBI) and Rosenberg self-esteem scale. Results : Mothers of ADHD children displayed more rejecting and controlling parenting style than mothers in the control group. ADHD children showed lower self-esteem and perceived their parents as not affectionate, but rejecting and controlling. Mothers with ADHD children who belonged to object relations pathological group showed more rejecting rearing attitude and their children believed that they were more controlling, compared with children and mothers in other conditions. Among factors in mother's object relations, insecure attachment and ego-centricity impacted the rearing attitude. In turn, affective rearing attitude mainly influenced children's self-esteem. Conclusion : This study suggests that the approach focused on mother's object relations may help with the treatment of children with ADHD.
Objective: This study pays attention to types of parental depression and differences in happiness and self-esteem of children in each group of parents. Methods: This study employed the 10th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children. Cluster analysis, covariance analysis, and Bonferroni verification were performed on the data of 1,282 parents with 9-year-old children. Results: A total of four parental depression groups were categorized: 'both depressed,' 'mother depressed,' 'father depressed,' and 'not depressed.' Children of the not depressed group showed the highest psychological well-being among the four groups. Children of the mother mildly depressed group had lower scores in happiness and self-esteem than those of the father mildly depressed group. Conclusion/Implications: This study was a new attempt to categorize parental depression together, breaking away from individual approaches such as mother's depression, father's depression, and mother's and father's depression and complementary approaches between couples. When examining the impact of parental depression on children's psychological well-being, it is necessary to consider depression of the father and mother as a unit.
The purpose of this study was to investigate factors which influence the degrees of parenting stress experienced by mothers within multicultural famiiles. This study will provide basic data which can be used to develop services and programs for multicultural families. The data were collected utilizing questionnaires administered to 155 mothers of multicultural families. The data were analyzed by means of ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression using the SPSS 18.0 program. The results were as follows : Firstly, the educational level, self-esteem, depression, and marital satisfaction of the mother are factors that significantly influence a mother's parenting stress within the context of a multicultural family. Secondly, the mother's psychological factor, including her self-esteem and depression, and the mother's educational level were the clearest indicators for their relative level of their parenting stress.
This study examined different individual and environmental factors that affect children's experience of harassment from their peers. For the individual variables, gender, behavioral problems, and self-esteem were included in the anal)'sis. For the family variables, mother's parenting style and the socio-economic status of parents were examined, and for the school variables, the supervision of the teacher and the attitudes of the classmates toward bullying were used. Two forms of peer harassment, the overt form and the relational form were examined in this study. The sample consisted of 520 fifth grade children. Statistics and methods used for the data analysis were Cronbach's alpha, factor analysis, frequency, percentage, means, standard deviation, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression. Several major relationships were found from the analyses. First, the more the children tend to internalize behavioral problems and have lower self-esteem, the more likely they are to get victimized by overt and relational forms of harassment. Boys experience more overt harassment than girls. Second, the more the mother's parenting style is permissive-nonintervening, or rejecting-restricting, and the higher the father's social status is, the more likely the child is subjected to overt and relational forms of harassment. Third, the more the children feel that the teacher is paying attention to bullying, the less the children are subjected to the overt form of peer harassment. Fourth, children's internalizing behavioral problems, mother's permissiveness-nonintervention, children's self-esteem, children's gender, and the supervision of the teacher regarding bullying significantly affected the experience of overt forms of harassment. A twenty two percent variance in the victimization of an overt form was explained by those variables. Children's internalizing behavioral problems, mother's permissiveness-nonintervention, children's self-esteem, and mother's rejection-restriction significantly affected the experience of relational form of peers harassment. Twenty six percent of the variance in the relational form of victimization was explained by those variables.
The purpose of this study was to examine the maternal separation anxiety depending on the quality of day care and mother's self-esteem. subjects consisted of 187 mothers who had children from 60 t 36 months of age. the instruments used were the questionnaires which consisted of the Maternal separation anxiety scale(Cho and park, 1992), Self-Esteem Inventory(Coopersmith, 1967), and the checklist which consisted of the early childhood environment Rating scale(Harms & Clifford, 1980) and the Family Day Care Rating scale(Harms & Clifford, 1989). The datas were analyzed by the statistical method based o frequency, percentile, t-test, and one-way ANOVA. The main results were as follows : First, there was a significant difference in maternal separation anxiety by mothers' age and not by their educational levels. Second, there were no significant differences in maternal separation anxiety by children's age, sex, and girth order. Third, there was no significant difference in maternal separation anxiety by quality of day 2 care, size of group, and adult-child ratio. Forth, there was a significant differences in maternal separation anxiety by mother's self-esteem.
This study was conducted to analyze working mother's affectionate and authoritarian behavior according to social demographic variables, life satisfaction, self-esteem, and Job characteristics. Questionnaires were developed and administered to 152 working mothers with 5th and 6th emementary school graders in Gwangju City. The results of this study can be summarized as follows : First, there was no significant differences in working mothers' child-rearing behavior according to social demographic variables. Second, affectionate behavior showed a significant difference according to all sub-factors of self-esteem, and authoritarian behavior showed a significant difference only in moral behavior and self-value. Third, there was a significant difference in both child-rearing behavior according to life satisfaction of working mothers. Fourth, according to job-related variables, there was a significant difference in the affectionate behavior, but not in the authoritarian behavior. Fifth, moral behavior and self-value had significant positive influencies on mother's affectionate behavior, and life satisfaction had negative influencies on authoritarian behavior.
The purpose of the study was to investigate the mother-child interactions in terms of maternal child- rearing behavior, maternal self-esteem, and their school-age children's self-esteem. The subjects were, all living in the Seoul area. A pre-test was conducted twice on 98 subjects. Each time the values of Chronbach's ${\alpha}$ were obtained on maternal behavior, maternal self-esteem and children's self-esteem. Data analysis was by ANOVA, Pearson's product-moment correlation. multiple regression analysis. Chronbach's ${\alpha}$, and factor analysis. Children's self-esteem was positively related (1) to family background factors:educational level, employment status of mothers, social economic status, and number of siblings (2) to maternal self-esteem and (3) to maternal child-rearing behavior in the dimensions of affection, acceptance, and encouragement of independency. Children's self-esteem was negatively related to maternal child-rearing behavior in the dimensions of hostility, rejection and encouragement of dependency. The relative importance of independent variables on children's self-esteem was found to be in the following order:mother's educational level. social economic status, and number of siblings (${\beta}=0.5935$, p< .001), maternal child-rearing behavior in the affection-hostility dimension (${\beta}=0.0849$, p< .001), and in the acceptance-rejection dimension(${\beta}=0.0365$, p< .05). The regression model showed that 25 percent of the children's self-esteem could be accounted for by family background factors. and maternal child-rearing behavior in the affection-hostility dimension and the acceptance-rejection dimension ($R^2=0.25$).
