  • Grain morphology, phase stability and mechanical properties in binary Ti-Al alloys containing 43-52 mo1% Al have been investigated. Isothermal forging was used to control the grain sizes of these alloys in the range of 5 to $350{\mu}m$. Grain morphology and volume fraction of ${\alpha}_2$ phase were observed by optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy. Compressive properties were evaluated at room temperature, 1070 K, and 1270 K in an argon atmosphere. Work hardening is significant at room temperature, but it hardly took place at 1070 K and 1270 K because of dynamical recrystallization. The grain morphologies were determined as functions of aluminum content and processing conditions. The transus curve of ${\alpha}$ and ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ shifted more to the aluminum-rich side than was the case in McCullough's phase diagram. Flow stress at room temperature depends strongly on the volume fraction of the ${\alpha}_2$ phase and the grain size, whereas flow stress at 1070 K is insensitive to the alloy composition or the grain size, and flow stress at 1270 K depends mainly on the grain size. The ${\alpha}_2$ phase in the alloys does not increase the proof stress at high temperatures. These observations indicate that improvement of both the proof stress at high temperature and the room temperature ductility should be achieved to obtain slightly Ti-rich TiAl base alloys.

  • The study of grinding behavior characteristics on aluminum powders and carbon nano tubes (CNTs) has recently gained scientific interest due to their useful effect in enhancing advanced nano materials and components, which significantly improves the property of new mechatronics integrated materials and components. We performed a series of dry grinding experiments using a planetary ball mill to systematically investigate the grinding behavior during Al/CNTs nano composite fabrication. This study focused on a comparative study of the various experimental conditions at several variations of rotation speeds, grinding time and with and without CNTs. The results were monitored for the particle size distribution, median diameter, crystal structure from XRD pattern and particle morphology at a given grinding time. It was observed that pure aluminum powders agglomerated with low rotation speed and completely enhanced powder agglomeration. However, Al/CNTs composites were achieved at maximum experiment conditions (350 rpm, 60 min.) of this study by a mechanical alloy process for Al/CNTs mixed powders because the grinding behavior of Al/CNTs composite powder was affected by addition of CNTs. Indeed, the powder morphology and crystal size of the composite powders changed more by an increase of grinding time and rotation speed.

  • This study investigated the effect of the grinding media of a ball mill under various conditions on the raw material of copper powder during the milling process with a simulation of the discrete element method. Using the simulation of the three-dimensional motion of the grinding media in the stirred ball mill, we researched the grinding mechanism to calculate the force, kinetic energy, and medium velocity of the grinding media. The grinding behavior of the copper powder was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. We found that the particle size increased with an increasing rotation speed and milling time, and the particle morphology of the copper powder became more of a plate type. Nevertheless, the particle morphology slightly depended on the different grinding media of the ball mill. Moreover, the simulation results showed that rotation speed and ball size increased with the force and energy.

  • This review paper evaluates different kinds of synthesis methods for calcite precipitated calcium carbonates by using different materials. The various processing routes of calcite with different compositions are reported and the possible optimum conditions required to synthesize a desired particle sizes of calcite are predicted. This paper mainly focuses on that the calcite morphology and size of the particles by carbonation process using loop reactors. In this regard, we have investigated various parameters such as $CO_2$ flow rate, Ca $(OH)_2$ concentration, temperature, pH effect, reaction time and loop reactor mechanism with orifice diameter. The research results illustrate the formation of well-defined and pure calcite crystals with controlled crystal growth and particle size, without additives or organic solvents. The crystal growth and particle size can be controlled, and smaller sizes are obtained by decreasing the Ca $(OH)_2$ concentration and increasing the $CO_2$ flow rate at lower temperatures with suitable pH. The crystal structure of obtained calcite was characterized by using X-ray diffraction method and the morphology by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The result of x-ray diffraction recognized that the calcite phase of calcium carbonate was the dominating crystalline structure.

  • The study of grinding behavior characteristics on the metal powders has recently gained scientific interest due to their useful applications to enhance advanced nano materials and components. This could significantly improve the property of new mechatronics integrated materials and components. So, a new evaluation method for standardizing grinding equipment and a comparative study for the grinding experiment during the grinding process with various grinding mills were investigated. The series of grinding experiments were carried out by a traditional ball mill, stirred ball mill, and planetary ball mill with various experimental conditions. The relationship between the standardization of equipment and experimental results showed very significant conclusions. Furthermore, the comparative study on the grinding experiment, which investigated changes in particle size, particle morphology, and crystal structure of materials with changes in experimental conditions for grinding equipment, found that the value of particle size distribution is related to the various experimental conditions as a revolution speed of grinding mill and media size.

  • An asymmetric microfiltration membranes were prepared with polysulfone by an immersion precipitation phase inversion method. Microfiltration membranes were prepared by polysulfone/N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone/polyvinylpyrrolidone/phosphoric acid casting solution and water coagulant. The vapor induced phase inversion method was used to prepare the membranes. The pore size and the morphology were changed by the phosphoric acid additive, the temperature of casting plate and the exposure time at the relative humidity of 74%. The morphology of membranes was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and microflow permporometer. By the addition of the phosphoric acid additive in the casting solution, the morphology of the prepared membranes were changed from a dense sponge structure to a loose asymmetric sponge structure. Due to the addition of catalytic amount of phosphoric acid to NMP casting solution, the mean pore size increased almost $0.2{\mu}m$ and the water flux increased about 3,000 LMH. The temperature of casting plate and exposure time had a apparent effect on the skin layer structure and the pore size and the porosity of the membrane.

  • Microstructural characteristics of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys during reheating at semi-solid temperature have been investigated. The size and morphology of primary Si particles in wedge-type mold-cast ingot has been compared with hot-rolled sheet and Si particulate reinforced Al composite. Effects of P and Sr addition on the morphological changes of primary Si particles have been also investigated. Observation of the solidification microstructures of the wedge-type mold-cast ingot at different cooling rates showed that alloying elements such as P and Sr affect the morphology of Si particles, especially in the area solidified at a slow cooling rate. Negligible change in the size of primary crystals was observed after reheating experiment, but ${\alpha}-halo$ formed around the Si particles and fine particles of Si precipitated in the surrounding area of the Si particles. In addition, there seemed to be no coarsening with increasing of holding time and the region of ${\alpha}-halo$ being decreased. Nucleation and recrystallization was accelerated with addition of alloying elements during hot rolling resulting in a decrease of primary Si particle size. In the case of extruded specimens, morphological change of primary Si particles was not observed after reheating. No ${\alpha}-halo$ formation was observed in Si reinforced Al composite because of the oxide film formed on the Si particles which acted as a diffusion barrier between substrate and the primary Si particles.

  • Spray pyrolysis has been found as an excellent method for the preparation of mesoporous barium sulfate at higher temperature. Ethylene glycol, a reducing agent, and solvents had good inhibition effect for the preparation of $BaSO_4$ nano particles. The $BaSO_4$ solution was sprayed at 500 & 800 ${^{\circ}C}$ using different solvents such as methanol, ethanol, propanol and n-butyl alcohol. $N_2$ adsorption-desorption isotherm revealed that $BaSO_4$ is micropore free, possessing narrow mesopores size distribution and high BET surface areas of 72.52 $m^2\;g^{-1}$ at 800 ${^{\circ}C}$ using propanol as an additive. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicates that the morphology of $BaSO_4$ nano material shows uniform shell like particles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) proved that the resulting BaSO4 nano particles were uniform in size and the average particle size was 4-8 nm. The surface functionality and ethylene glycol peaks were assessed by Fourier transform infrared resonance (FTIR) spectroscopy. Low intensity ethylene glycol specific absorption peak was observed in propanol which proved that propanol had good inhibition effect on the structural morphology of nano particles.

  • Polypropylene(PP)/polyurethane(PU) blends with reactive compatibilizers were prepared by the compositional quenching process. Maleic anhydride grafted PP(MPP) and hydroxyethyl maleimide grafted PP(HPP) were introduced as reactive compatibilizers. The formation of HPP and the reactions of compatibilizers with the PU components were confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. The morphology, tensile properties, thermal stability, and surface property were studied. The blends prepared by the compositional quenching showed better dispersed domain morphology than the melt blends. The PU domain size became more uniform and reduced in size with increasing the amount of compatibilizers. The blends with HPP showed sightly smaller domain sire than the blends with MPP. The blends with compatibilizers all showed improved tensile properties, surface property. and thermal stability due to the interfacial adhesion effect. The blends with MPP showed higher surface energy than the blends with HPP, but the latter showed better thermal stability compared to the former.
