Kushia zosteraphila Harris V.A. & Iwasaki, 1996 is newly collected and described from macroalgae in the intertidal region of Gijang-gun, along the southeastern coastal region of Korea. Kushia zosteraphila can be distinguished from congeners by following morphological characteristics: the length of the first dorsal seta similar with the second dorsal seta of female P5, the length to width ratio of the female caudal ramus, and the presence of a conspicuous comb on the accessory lobe of the male antennule. Although there are some minor discrepancies, the main diagnostic characteristics of the specimen from the study area are well-matched with the original description. We herein provide detailed morphological descriptions and illustrations of this species. According to a survey of the location of the reported porcellidiid species in Korea, this specimen is the second record in Korean waters of the genus Kushia. A key to species of the family Porcellidiidae in Korea is provided. A partial sequence of the mitochondrial COI gene was obtained and provided as a DNA barcode for this species.
A specimen of Henricia was collected from the adjacent waters of Moseulpo, Jeju Island, Korea, using fishing nets. The specimen was identified as Henricia aspera Fisher, 1906, which belongs to the family Echinasteridae of the order Spinulosida. This species can be distinguished from other Henricia species by its broad arms (R/r=4.1), swollen arm base, three to seven short abactinal spines, and close-meshed formation of the actinal skeleton. This study has newly recorded H. aspera inhabiting the Korean fauna, bringing the total number of known Henricia species in Korea to 16. This study provides a description of the morphological characteristics of H. aspera with photographs of each part. Additionally, a table is presented that compares the morphological characteristics of H. aspera with closely related Henricia species.
Two Pseudopolydora polychaetes, P. bassarginensis and P. reticulata, originally described from Peter the Great Bay in Russia and Taiwan, respectively, were recorded firstly in Korea with DNA information. Two species are known to have distinct morphological characteristics that are separated from other Pseudopolydora species. They are characterized by reticulate pigmentations on the dorsal sides of the anterior chaetigers, a longitudinal black band-like pigmentation on the caruncle, and black paired spots on the ventral sides of the anterior chaetigers. These two species can be distinguished morphologically from each other by the length of the caruncle. Methyl green staining pattern of the species is a good method for delimiting Pseudopolydora species. The partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), 16S ribosomal DNA (16S rDNA), and the nuclear 18S ribosomal DNA (18S rDNA) from Korean specimens of the two species were determined. The morphological descriptions and images of the two Pseudopolydora species are provided.
Aquilonastra doranae, a newly recorded sea star, was collected from the southern coast of Jejudo Island by a trimix SCUBA diving survey in May 2021. The newly collected specimen is distinguished from a previously known Aquilonastra species in South Korea by having a fissiparous body form with six arms. Results of pairwise genetic distance analysis showed that the new specimen was identical or close to A. anomala from Hawaii (0.0%), Australia (3.1%), and Samoa (3.3%). However, morphological characteristics of the Korean Aquilonastra specimen corresponded with the original description of A. doranae, not that of A. anomala, including the number of inferomarginal spines, the absence of pedicellariae, and the inhabit locality. Thus, this study agrees with the original morphological study of A. doranae and presents this specimen as the first record of A. doranae in South Korea.
This study introduces one specimen each of the genera Gymnopilus, Marasmius, and Mycena as an unrecorded species found in the Hwasun Gotjawal and Jeju Gotjawal Provincial Park of the Hangyeong-Andeok terrain, South Korea. Morphological analyses of macroscopic and microscopic features, and molecular analysis of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region were conducted to identify the specimens. Our results indicated that the newly identified specimens were Gymnopilus dilepis, Marasmius tenuissimus, and Mycena seminau. Here, we describe these newly identified mushroom species and provide baseline data on their diversity in Gotjawal, South Korea.
Henricia specimens were collected using a dual approach of trimix scuba diving and fishing nets. This inclusive collection encompasses the discovery of two species highlighted in this study and introduces and provides comprehensive descriptions for Henricia kinkasana and Henricia longispina aleutica. The descriptions offered in this study were derived from the thorough examinations of external morphological characteristics. The documentation provides detailed insight into key traits related to the abactinal and actinal skeletons and spines of these newly recorded species in Korea. This comprehensive examination contributes to our understanding of the distinct morphological characteristics defining each species within the genus Henricia.

In 2022, a fungal isolate, designated KNUF-22-049, was obtained from a soil sample collected from a field in Sang-ju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea. The strain exhibited cultural and morphological characteristics, including colony color and size and the shapes and sizes of conidiogenous cells and conidia, that were consistent with those of Apinisia keratinophila. A phylogenetic analysis using the sequences of the internal transcribed spacer regions and the large subunit of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene confirmed that isolate KNUF-22-049 is most closely related to A. keratinophila CBS 947.73T at a species level. Both the morphological observations and phylogenetic analysis indicated that KNUF-22-049 is indeed an A. keratinophila strain. This study represents the first documentation of Apinisia keratinophila in Korea.
In order to find useful taxonomic morphological characters, 17 taxa from East-Asia Astragalus and Oxytropis anertii were investigated. In this study, seed coat structure, fruit surface, and fruit anatomical structures were selected to classify the species in Astragalus. As a results, useful morphological and anatomical characters in East-Asia Astragalus were life cycle, leaflet shape, raceme, petal color, seed color, pod shape, absent or present of hairs in pod surface, bent degree of dorsal suture, and thickness of endocarp. Using medicinal sources in China, A. floridus, A. membranaceus, A. membranaceus var. mongholicus and A. tongolensis were formed same group. However, these were not completely consensus in the morphological characters. The other hand, A. koraiensis and A. sikokianus, which have controversial taxonomic issue, have clearly no differences morphological characters each other. Therefore, A. koraiensis, A. sikokianus, and A. bhotanensis should be conducted a comparative study on the DNA sequences and molecular cytology in order to clarify the taxonomic treatments in the near future.
To understand morphological and genetic differentiation between Euphorbia esula and E. maackii we examined 12 morphological characters and 11 isozyme loci from 14 populations of two species. Species of E. esula complex (A = 1.63, P = 44.83, $H_e$ = 0.198) in Korea maintain nearly as high as the genetic diversity reported in East Asian E. jolkinii and E. fauriei while lower than those of E. ebracteolata and E. pekinensis in Korea. Although the ranges of most morphological character variation of the two species overlap, E. esula and E. maackii were well recognized by the combination of the morphological traits, and the result of UPGMA phenogram supports the two distinct species inhibited in Korea. However, isozyme data do not support the recognition of E. esula and E. maackii. The discordance between morphological and allozyme data should be explained by the recent divergence or gene flow via introgressive hybridization between two species.
The general morphological characters of Lysimchia sect. Spicatae were reviewed. From the results, numerical analyses were conducted based on 34 morphological characters from 14 populations of three species in Korea in order to investigate the key characters among the treated taxa and taxonomic delimitation and to discuss the systematic relationship. Habitat, leaf apices, presence or absent of hair on leaves, stipules, stems and bracts, branch of stems, kind of hair on floral axis and pedicels, shape of florescens were important diagnostic characters to identify the species. The relationship between Lysimachia clethoides and L. barystachys was more close than that of L. fortunei based on the quantitative characters. Also, a new key was made up from the result.
