  • This study introduces one specimen each of the genera Gymnopilus, Marasmius, and Mycena as an unrecorded species found in the Hwasun Gotjawal and Jeju Gotjawal Provincial Park of the Hangyeong-Andeok terrain, South Korea. Morphological analyses of macroscopic and microscopic features, and molecular analysis of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region were conducted to identify the specimens. Our results indicated that the newly identified specimens were Gymnopilus dilepis, Marasmius tenuissimus, and Mycena seminau. Here, we describe these newly identified mushroom species and provide baseline data on their diversity in Gotjawal, South Korea.

  • While there is no evidence for parafoveal processing in alphabetic languages such as English and Finnish, there is some evidence that morphological information is processed in syllabic languages like Chinese. Korean writing system, Hangul, would be able to provide morphological preview benefit effects since it is an "alphabetic syllabary" which contains both alphabetic and syllabic features. This study explored morphological parafoveal preview benefit effects during reading Korean using irregular verbs, which have phonological and orthographical differences between fundamental and conjugated forms. In the Experiment, the target word was irregular conjugated form, and there were four preview conditions: identical (e.g. 구워), fundamental form (e.g. 굽다), orthographically related (e.g. 굼다), and unrelated control (e.g. 죨어). In the result of study, identical was shortest and morphological, orthographical, unrelated preview were followed. Moreover, measures of first-pass reading of morphological preview were significantly shorter than those of unrelated control preview. This results support the hypothesis of morphological preview benefit effects in Korean. The implications of the results are discussed.

  • Due to the popularization of high-performance capturing equipments and the emergence of powerful image-editing softwares, it is easy to make high-quality counterfeit money. However, the probability of detecting counterfeit money to the general public is extremely low and the detection device is expensive. In this paper, a counterfeit money detection algorithm using a general purpose scanner and computer system is proposed. First, the printing features of color printers are calculated using morphological operations and gray-level co-occurrence matrix. Then, these features are used to train a support vector machine classifier. This trained classifier is applied for identifying either original or counterfeit money. In the experiment, we measured the detection rate between the original and counterfeit money. Also, the printing source was identified. The proposed algorithm was compared with the algorithm using wiener filter to identify color printing source. The accuracy for identifying counterfeit money was 91.92%. The accuracy for identifying the printing source was over 94.5%. The results support that the proposed algorithm performs better than previous researches.

  • In this paper, we propose a directional feature extraction method for off-line handwritten numerals by using the morphological operations. Direction features are obtained from four directional line images, each of which contains horizontal, vertical, right-diagonal and left-diagonal lines in entire numeral lines. Conventional method for extracting directional features uses Kirsch masks which generate edge-shaped double line images for each direction, whereas our method uses directional erosion operations and generate single line images for each direction. To apply these directional erosion operations to the numeral image, preprocessing steps such as thinning and dilation are required, but resultant directional lines are more similar to numeral lines themselves. Our four [$4{\times}4$] directional features of a numeral are obtained from four directional line images through a zoning method. For obtaining the higher recognition rates of the handwrittern numerals, we use the multiple feature which is comprised of our proposed feature and the conventional features of a kirsch directional feature and a concavity feature. For recognition test with given features, we use a multi-layer perceptron neural network classifier which is trained with the back propagation algorithm. Through the experiments with the CENPARMI numeral database of Concordia University, we have achieved a recognition rate of 98.35%.

  • Specimens of Bosmina longirostris collected from various freshwater habitats of 84 localities in South Korea from October 1981 to August 1997 were examined, and seasonal changes of the cladoceran populations in Late Kwangjuho from October 1995 to August 1977 were analysed. In this paper, B. longirostris in Korea was redescribed and figured, with a discussion of morphological characteristics. Some ecological features of the species were noted.

  • Terebelliphilus simplex n. gen., n. sp. and Myxomolgus invulgus n. sp. are described from the tubicolous polychaetes found in the intertidal shores in the Yellow Sea. The new genus Terebelliphilus belongs to the family Sabelliphilidae but is characteristic in bearing the reduced segmentations In legs 1-4, an unusual sexual dimorphism in antennule, and the ventral location of genital areas. Myxomolgus invulgus is readily distinguishable from its congeners by the morphological features of rostrum, antennule, mandible, maxilla, leg 4 and female leg 5.

  • A spionid polychaete, Scolelepis (Scolelepis) kudenovi Hartmann-Schroder, 1981, is newly reported from Korean waters with description and illustration. Scolelepis (Scolelepis) kudenovi is characterized by a combination of the following morphological features: the notopodial setae are present on the setiger 1; the occipital tentacle is absent; the branchiae are partially fused to the notopodial postsetal lamellae; the notopodial and neuropodial hooded hooks are bidentate only; the notopodial hooded hooks are present on the posterior setigers. A key to Scolelepis species from Korean waters is provided in this paper.

  • We discuss several key technologies of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) that share common features of all organic displays (AODs). An overview of the morphological effects associated with molecular ordering at interfaces on the Crystallinity and the carrier mobility in organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) is given from the viewpoint of the alignment mechanism for LCDs. Recent progress of improving the carrier mobility in the OTFTs is also reviewed.

  • Eight species of Marssonina parasitic on 21 species of host plants from Korea are described and illustrated. They are Marssonina brunnea (Ellis & Everh.) Magnus, M. capsulicola (Rostr.) Magnus, M. celastri H.D. Shin & H.T. Lee, M. coronaria (Ellis & Davis) Davis, M. fragariae (Lib.) Kleb., M. juglandis (Lib.) Magnus, M. rosae (Lib.) Died. and M. sennenis (Gonz. Frag.) Vassiljevsky & Karak. Of these, M. capsulicola and M. coronaria sometimes poss three-celled conidia and M. sennenis is characterized by a short appendage at the basal end of the conidia. Morphological features of conidia and host ranges were of taxonomic values for species delimitation.
