Two New Records of Crangonid Shrimps (Crustacea: Decapoda: Caridea) in Korean Waters

  • Two crangonid shrimps, Paracrangon abei Kubo, 1937 and Pontocaris sibogae (De Man, 1918), collected from the northeastern and southeastern waters of Jeju Island, are newly recorded into the Korean fauna. The former is the second species and the latter is the only species of each genus recorded in Korea. Morphological and distributional accounts of these two species are briefly discussed.

  • In June 2012, leaf spot and stem rot were observed on Wilford Swallowwort plants grown in Cheonan, Korea. Three fungal isolates obtained from the diseased leaves and stems were identified as Stemphylium lycopersici, based on morphological, cultural, and molecular characteristics and pathogenicity. This is the first report of leaf spot and stem rot on Wilford Swallowwort caused by S. lycopersici.

  • Sleeping blight was observed on soybean plants grown in Yanggu, Suwon and Geumsan from 2005 to 2011. Symptoms developed on stems and pods of affected soybean plants. Five fungal isolates were obtained from the diseased plants and identified as Septogloeum sojae based on their morphological, cultural and molecular characteristics. Pathogenicity of the fungus was confirmed on soybean plants by artificial inoculation. This is the first report of S. sojae causing sleeping blight in soybean plants in Korea.

  • We describe two penaeoid shrimp, Hymenopenaeus equalis and Metapenaeus ensis, that were collected from an area northwest of Jeju Island and are new to Korean waters. Hymenopenaeus equalis is the first Korean representative of this genus. A brief distributional and morphological description of the two species is provided.

  • The pandalid shrimp Procletes levicarina (Bate, 1888) was newly collected from the western and southern waters of Jeju Island, Korea. This species is the only known member of the genus Procletes which belongs to the family Pandalidae. Morphological description and illustration with a color photograph of the species are given. With the addition of P. levicarina, the family Pandalidae in Korean waters consists of 10 species belonging to 5 genera.

  • Two hippolytid shrimps, Spirontocaris spinus (Sowerby, 1805) and Lebbeus unalaskensis (Rathbun, 1902) are described on the basis of material collected from the deepwater of the East Sea, Korea at 310-810 m. The former has been incorrectly known as Spirontocaris arcuata Rathbun, 1902 in Korea and the latter is a new member of the Korean fauna. Morphological and distributional accounts of these species are presented with illustrations.

  • Three species of pelagic sergestid shrimps, Deosergestes seminudus (Hansen, 1919), Sergia lucens (Hansen, 1922) and S. talismani (Barnard, 1947), were identified based on collections by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute from the Korean coast of the Yellow Sea between 2003 and 2011. They are herein reported for the first time from the Yellow Sea. Morphological descriptions and illustrations with color photographs of all species are also given. With the addition of these species, the family Sergestidae in the Korean waters now comprises five species belonging to three genera. Finally, a key to the Korean genus and species of the family Sergestidae is presented.

  • Clubroot symptoms were frequently observed on roots of shepherd's-purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) grown in a field in Nonsan, Chungnam province, Korea in March, 2009. Many resting spores were found in the cells of the root gall tissues collected from the field. The clubroot pathogen was identified as Plasmodiophora brassicae based on its morphological and pathological characteristics. This is the first report that P. brassicae causes clubroot of shepherd's-purse in Korea.

  • Recently, a severe slime mold infestation affected oriental melon plants in fields in Chilgok county, Gyeongbuk province, Korea. Specimens were collected from the fields and examined for identification. A species of Myxomycetes, Fuligo gyrosa, was identified based on its morphological characteristics. This is the first report that F. gyrosa causes slime mold of oriental melon.
