Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) has attempted moored current measurements since 1978. This note describes mooring types and failures of moorings deployed in coastal and continental shelf regions around Korea. Taut-wire U-type mooring lines and trawl-resistant bottom mounts have been mainly used in shallow seas. In order to avoid the failure of moorings in the shallow seas, it is needed to (1) design a proper mooring plan considering local mooring environments including fishing activities and (2) use adequate mooring equipments and parts considering mooring period, depth, and other factors that could affect the mooring unexpectedly.
For a spread-moored FPSO (Floating Production, Storage, & Off-loading) subjected to environmental excitation from waves, current, and wind, a procedure to determine optimum length and stiffness of mooring lines is suggested using quasi-static frequency domain response analyses. Coupled relations between design parameters are closely examined. In consideration of this, optimized design parameters are proposed based on minimum weight condition. The initial design parameters for numerical analyses are calculated using the static catenary equation of mooring lines. It is demonstrated the line tension and vessel's offset are influenced by the mooring line length and stiffness. Accordingly it is suggested the optimum vessel's offset range should be determined considering line fatigue damage. The availability and limitation of the application of quasi-static analysis method for spread mooring system are explained by comparing the result of time domain analysis with one of frequency domain analysis.

The mooring lines of a floating type offshore plant are known to show wide banded and bimodal responses. These phenomena come from a combination of low and high frequency random load components, which are derived from the drift-restoring motion characteristic and wind- sea, respectively. In this study, fatigue models were applied to predict the fatigue damage of mooring lines under those loads, and the result were compared. For this purpose, seven different fatigue damage prediction models were reviewed, including mathematical formula. A FPSO (floating, production, storage, and offloading) with a $4{\times}4$ spread catenary mooring system was selected as a numerical model, which was already installed at an offshore area of West Africa. Four load cases with different combinations of wave and wind spectra were considered, and the fatigue damage to each mooring line was estimated. The rain flow fatigue damage for the time process of the mooring tension response was compared with the results estimated by all the fatigue damage prediction models. The results showed that both Benasciutti-Tovo and JB models could most accurately predict wide banded bimodal fatigue damage to a mooring system.
Unlike typical a dynamic positioning (DP) system, a DP-assisted mooring system must determine a set point (SP) that can ensure a mooring tension safety range to prevent an excessive increase in mooring tension. In this paper, a new algorithm for determining the SP is suggested in order to reduce the tension on all the mooring lines. To determine the SP, a working area around the vessel is represented by a rectangular grid. Thus, the size of the grid area is limited considering the offset of a vessel with a mooring system. At each grid's nodes, the resultant tension from all the mooring lines is estimated using the time history of the tension and vessel's position. The results of static analyses for each grid position are used to estimate the global tension. Consequently, the SP is automatically selected as a position satisfying criterion for minimizing the total tension. In order to validate the suggested algorithm, a motion simulation with the control system in the time domain and a discussion of the results are presented.

This paper presents a mooring design procedure for a floating offshore wind turbine. Offshore environmental data for Jeju are taken from KHOA (Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration) and used for the environmental conditions in numerical analyses. A semi-submersible-type floating wind system with a 5-MW-class wind turbine studied by the DeepCwind Consortium is applied. Catenary mooring with a studless chain is chosen as the mooring system. Design deliverables such as the nominal sizes of chain and length of the mooring line are decided by considering the long-term prediction of the breaking strength of the mooring lines where a 100-year return period is used. The designed mooring system is verified using a fatigue calculation based on rain-flow cycle counting, an S-N curve, and a Miner's damage summation of rule. The mooring tension process is obtained from time-domain motion analyses using ANSYS/AQWA.

A numerical model analysis was performed to analyze the motion and mooring tension response of submersible fish cage systems in irregular waves and currents. Two systems were examined: a submersible cage mooring with a single, high tension mooring and the same system, but with an additional three point mooring. Using a Morison equation type model, simulations of the systems were conducted with the cage at the surface and submerged. Irregular waves(JONSWAP spectrum) with and without a co-linear current with a magnitude of 0.5m/s were simulated into the model as input parameters. Surge, heave and pitch dynamic calculations were made, along with tension responses in the mooring lines. Results were analyzed in both the time and frequency domains and linear transfer functions were calculated.

This paper investigates the static configurations and the dynamic behaviors of a single point mooring line. To obtain the static configuration and static tension distribution along the mooring line, including the effect of fluid nonlinear drag and the elasticity of the line, the Runge-Kutta fourth order numerical method was used. The relationship between the horizontal excursion and the horizontal restoring force component of the mooring line, which is very important to a mooring line design, and the effect of a subsurface buoy on the static configuration are presented. In nonlinear dynamic analysis including nonlinear fluid drag acting on the line and geometrical nonlinearity for large deflections, finite element method using updated Lagrangian was used to obtain the solution. In the case of upper end harmonic excitation of the mooring line, the dynamic motion and the tension were also presented.
The motion response of floating structures is of significant concern in marine engineering. Floating structures can be disturbed by waves, winds, and currents that create undesirable motions of the vessel, therefore causing challenges to its operation. For a floating structure, mooring lines are provided in order to maintain its position; these should also produce a restoring force when the vessel is displaced. Therefore, it is important to investigate the tension of mooring lines and the motion responses of a twin barge when moored to guarantee the safety of the barge during its operation. It is essential to precisely identify the characteristics of the motion responses of a moored barge under different loading conditions. In this study, the motion responses of a moored twin barge were measured in regular waves of seven different wave directions. The experiment was performed with regular waves with different wavelengths and wave directions in order to estimate the twin-barge motions and the tension of the mooring line. In addition, the motion components of roll, pitch, and heave are completely free. In contrast, the surge, sway, and yaw components are fixed. In the succeeding step, a time-domain analysis is carried out in order to obtain the responses of the structure when moored. As a result, the Response Amplitude Operator (RAO) motion value was estimated for different wave directions. The results of the experiment show that the motion components of the twin barge have a significant effect on the tension of the mooring lines.

This paper describes an investigation how to carry out model tests of deepwater moorings exceeding the basin depth range. A hybrid mooring model, a combination of mooring lines scaled model and a couple of linear springs, is taken into account as an equivalent substitute of a full depth mooring system. Such an idea is applied to the model test of an OTEC mooring system to be installed in 1000m deep ocean. A 1/25 scaled model test of surface vessel and the upper part of mooring system is performed at ocean engineering basin. Possibility and limitation of the hybrid mooring modeling is discussed.

In this paper, we investigated the design method of mooring system in ultra deep sea and carried out the conceptual design for offshore West Africa oil field in ultra deep sea of 3000 meters. Recently, it was feasible to design and install the offshore floating structures in deep sea of up to 2000 meters. Due to the simplicity, two-point mooring design is fully utilized. Force-excursion curves are throughly examined to find out the feasibility of various combinations of mooring lines. Free length and pretension effects are discussed. It is found that composite materials including synthetic fiber rope may be good solution for ultra deep sea mooring design.
