  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) was crosslinked by UV irradiation in the presence of water soluble photoinitiators. The crosslinking of PVA films with 1,2,3,4-Butanetetracarboxylic acid(BTCA) and sodium phosphinate monohydrate(SPM) was also achieved via thermal curing. Different factors in the crosslinking including thermal and radiation methods were studied. Gel fraction of PVA films increased with increasing photoinitiator concentration. The maximum gel fraction on the crosslinking method was reached about 81%. The glass transition and maximum decomposition temperature improved by both thermal and radiation crosslinking.

  • Electrically conductive polymer nanocomposites were prepared by the inclusion of graphene-based nanofillers. Graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide wrapped by poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS-RGO) were used as nanofillers to make good dispersion with the aqueous dispersion of polystyrene (PS) particles. GO sheets were synthesized by the modified Hummers' method from graphite, and PSS-RGO sheets were prepared by the reduction of GO-dispersed PSS solution with hydrazine monohydrate. Morphology and properties of PS/GO and PS/PSS-RGO nanocomposites via latex technology were investigated. Both nanofillers showed well dispersed morphology in PS matrix. Rheological and electrical percolation thresholds were 0.28 and 0.51 wt% for GO, and 0.50 and 1.01 wt% for PSS-RGO respectively. It is speculated that PS/GO nanocomposites showed better conductivity than PS/PSS-RGO counterparts due to the partial recovery of GO by thermal reduction during molding.

  • The crystal structure of ethylenediammonium bis (p-methylbenzenesulfonate) monohydrate, $C_2H_{10}N_{22}^{+2}{\cdot}(C_7O_3H_7S^-){\cdot}H_2O$ has been determined by X-ray diffraction techniques. The space group is P21, in 2 unit cell with a = 12.649 (2) ${\AA}$, b = 7.727 (1) ${\AA}$, c = 11.295 (2) ${\AA}$, ${\beta}$ =111.8(1)$^{\circ}$, and z = 2. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined to R = 0.060 for 1134 reflections measured with Mo-K${\alpha}$ radiation. Two p-methylbenzenesulfonates, fragment A and B, from a pair through the hydrogen bonds to the ethylenediammonium ion. The sulfonate group in the fragment B are disordered. There are six unique hydrogen bonds, of which four are between the ethylenediammonium ion and the sulfonate groups and remaining two involve the water molecule.

  • In this research, sol-gel processed CuO p-type thin film transistors were fabricated with copper (II) acetate monohydrate precursors. After $500^{\circ}C$ annealing process, the deposited thin films were fully converted into CuO. We investigated $UV/O_3$ process time effect on electrical characteristics of sol-gel processed CuO thin film transistors. After 600 sec $UV/O_3$ process, the fabricated CuO thin film transistor delivered field effect mobility in saturation regime of $5{\times}10^{-3}\;cm^2/V{\cdot}s$ and on/off current ratio of ${\sim}10^2$.

  • The crystal and molecular structure of theophylline hydrochloride has been determined from X-ray data by Patterson techniques. The structure has been refined by block-diagonal least-squares and Fourier synthesis on three dimensional data. The unit cell is orthorhombic, space group $P_{na21}$, with a = 14.01, b = 11.49, c = 6.77${\AA}$, and contains four molecules. The final R value based on 743 observed reflexions is 12.2%. The intramolecular distances are similar to those in other compounds containing a purine or pyrimidine group. The molecules are nearly planar and are stacked in layers parallel to the (001)plane. The chlorine atom is coordinated to N(1) atom at a distance of 3.06${\AA}$. The structure is stabilized mainly by van der Waals interactions; however, a short N${\cdot}{\cdot}{\cdot}$Cl contact of length $3.06\AA$, which is slightly less than the expected van der Waals separation, suggest that weak charge transfer interaction may be present. The relationship between this structure and the known structures of theophylline monohydrate and caffeine monohydrate are discussed.

  • This experiment was carried out to examine the effects of foliar applications of 100 mg.L$^{-1}$ ethephon mixed with different calcium formulae (10,000 mg.L$^{-1}$ Clef-non, 2,000 mg.L$^{-1}$ Cell-bine, 2,000 mg.L$^{-1}$ Hicalux, and 2,000 mg.L$^{-1}$ calcium acetate monohydrate) on the rind coloration, defoliation and fruit quality of satsuma mandarin cultivated in the plastic greenhouse. Foliar applications of ethephon alone or in mixture with either Clef-non, Cell-bine, Hicalux or calcium acetate monohydrate demonstrated that increased 'a'value of peel chromaticity as compared to the control. The treatments encouraged fruit colour and allowed the harvest date to be predicted. The defoliation ratio decreased considerably by foliar applications of ethephon mixed with Cell-bine or Hicalux. The sugar content of fruit increased by 1.6, 1.54, and 1.54$^{\circ}$Bx with the foliar applications of ethephon, ethephon+Clef-non, and ethephon+Cell-bine, respectively. With the foliar applications of ethephon in mixture with Cell-bine, fruit coloration was accelerated. defoliation was delayed, and fruit quality was improved.

  • Structures of two polymorphs of ${\alpha},{\alpha}$-trehalose octaacetate monohydrate, $C_{28}H_{38}O_{19}\;{\cdot}\;H_2O$, have been studied by X-ray diffraction method. ${\alpha},{\alpha}$-trehalose (${\alpha}$-D-glucopyranosyl ${\alpha}$-D-glucopyranoside) is a nonreducing disaccharide. The polymorph I belongs to the monoclinic $P2_1$, and has unit cell parameters of a=10.725(l), b=15.110(4), c=11.199(5) ${\AA}$, ${\beta}=108.16(2)^{\circ}$ and Z=2. The polymorph II is orthorhombic $P2_12_12_1$, with a=13.684(4), b=15.802(4), c=17.990(9) ${\AA}$ and Z=4. The final R and R$_w$ values for monoclinic polymorph I are 0.043 and 0.048 and for orthorhombic polymorph II are 0.116 and 0.118, respectively. Those R values of polymorph II are high because the large thermal motions of acetyl groups and the poor quality of the crystal. The molecular conformations in the two polymorphs are similar. Both D-glucopyranosyl rings have chair $^4C_1$ conformations and atoms of glycosidic chain ${\alpha}(1{\rightarrow}1)$ linkage are coplanar. The primary acetate groups of the pyranose residues assume both gauche-trans conformations. The molecules of two polymorphs have pseudo-C$_2$ symmetry at glycosidic O(1) atom. The bond lengths and angles are normal compared with those in other acetylated sugar compounds. The molecules in the monoclinic crystal are held by the hydrogen bonds with the water molecules and by van der Waals forces.

  • Lithium dual complex grease was prepared through the second continuous saponification reaction of a complex gellant system whose essential components comprised of a selected hydroxy fatty acid, lithium hydroxide monohydrate and boric acid to have a fiber structure of chemical, thermal and mechanical stability at high temperatures. An optimum amount of complex gellant was found to be 14% (NLGI #2), and an addition of castor wax of 1.5% provided an excellent performance properties, especially. The oil separation, oxidation stability, water wash-out property, shear stability, extreme pressure and wear property of thus prepared were tested by the ASTM and KS methods, and a characteristic result was obtained.

  • PVA films with 1,2,3,4-Butanetetracarboxylic acid(BTCA) and sodium hypophosphite monohydrate(SHM) were crosslinked via thermal curing. Different parameters affecting on the crosslinking were investigated including BTCA and SHM concentration, curing temperature and time. The cured films was extracted with boiling water and gel fraction was calculated from weight change of the PVA films. Moisture regain of the gelled films was also measured. While the gel fraction of PVA films increased with increasing curing temperature and time, moisture regain decreased. Water resistance of the crosslinked PVA films improved by the BTCA crosslinking treatment.
