  • '4 NiAl coating process was applied on 316 stainless steel to retard the corrosion of the wet- seal area of separator for the molten carbonate fuel cell. The Nit11 phasc on the stainless steel substrate could be formed by pre-coating with Ni, plated with A1 and ther, heat treated at $800^{\circ}C$ for 3 hr in $H_2/N_2$ gas atmosphere. The corrosion protection behavior of YiAl coating layer was stuilied under immersion condition in molten cxhonate salt($62^{m}/_{o}Li_2CO_3-38^{m}/_{o}/K_{2}CO_{3}$) at $650^{\circ}C$. The NiAl coating layer ticposited on the AiSi 316 stainless steel had high corrosion resistance in molten carbor. dte salt. The corrosion resistance of XiAl (~~jpoared to be associated with the .A1 oxide formed on the surface of coating layer.

  • The electrolytes in thermal batteries are nonconductive solids at ambient temperature, which prevent the self-discharge and corrosion. To meet severe environmental requirements and guarantee acceptable handling yields, all the pellets in cells should have adequate strength, especially for the cathodes due to their poor binding properties among FeS2 particles. By modifying the surface microstructure of FeS2 through molten-salt heat treatment, the inter-particle binding strength is greatly increased, resulting in the enhanced pellet strength and yield. The addition of Li2O also promoted the soft salt coating coverage of hard FeS2 particles, which can be explained by the enhanced wettability of the molten salt.

  • As a part of assessment of the structural material for the molten salt handling system, corrosion behavior of austenitic alloys, Fe-base and Ni-base in the molten salt of $LiCl-Li_2O_2$ was investigated in the range of temperature; 650~$725^{\circ}C$, time; 24- 168h, $Li_2O$; 3wt%, mixed gas; Ar-10%$O_2$. In the molten salt of $LiCl-Li_2O_2$, Ni-base alloys showed higher corrosion resistance than Fe-base alloys. Fe-base alloy with low Fe and high Ni contents exhibited better corrosion resistance. The scales of $Cr_2O_3$, $FeCr_2O_4$ on Fe-base alloys were showed, and $Cr_2O_3$, $NiFe_2O_4$ on Ni-base alloys were also showed.

  • Corrosion behavior of Fe-Ni-Cr alloy in molten salts of LiCl and LiCl-$Li_2O was investigated in the tempera-ture range of $650~850^{\circ}C$. In the molten salt of LiCl, and internal oxidation of Fe occurred in the KSA(Kaeri Superalloy)-1 alloy without containing Cr, while a dense protective oxide scale of $LiCrO_2$ was formed in the KSA-4, Incoloy 800H and KSA-5 alloys. In the mixed molten salt of LiCl-$Li_2O$, internal oxidation of Fe and Cr took place in the KSA-1 and KSA-4 alloys, respectively. Non-protective porous oxide scales consisting of $LiCrO_2$ and Ni were formed in the Incoloy 800H and KSA-5. The corrosion rate of the alloys increased with the increase in Cr content and the corrosion rate followed the parabolic law for the alloy containing Cr content less than 8%, and the linear law for the alloy containing Cr content more than 8%. Such a corrosion behavior of the alloy in the mixed molten salt of LiCl-$Li_2O$ was interpreted in terms of the basic fluxing mechanism of protective oxide scale of $Cr_2O_3$.

  • Corrosion resistance and basic physical properties of solid tantalum are not comparable to most of the structural metallic materials. The relative high cost and melting temperature of tantalum are obstacles to be widely applied to general engineering processes. Electrodeposition in molten salt enables compact and uniform tantalum coating. In this study, Ta was coated onto base metal (SUS316L) with different current densities (0.5, 5, $20mA/cm^2$) by using MSE (Molten Salt Electrodeposition). In this study, it showed that deposition efficiency and microstructure of Ta coating layer were strongly depended on current density. In the case of the current density of $5mA/cm^2$, densest microstructure was obtained. The current density above $5mA/cm^2$ caused non-uniform microstructure due to rapid deposition rate. Dense microstructure and intact coating layer contributed to significant corrosion resistance enhancement.
