  • In Korea, a small proportion of fishery products are contaminated with a considerable amount of potentially hazardous contaminants. So, there is generally a high risks to consumers. Inorganic contaminants with the greatest potential for toxicity are Sb, As, Cd, Pb, Hg, Se and the Sulfides. As appears to be much more variable than the others. This study was performed to assess the levels of the As in fisheries caught from the waters of the western coast of Korea. The samples included 26 kinds of fishes, 18 kinds of Mollusca, 3 kinds of Crustacea and 7 kinds of salted fishes. The Moisture content of molluscans was significantly higher than that of others (p<0.05). And the As contents of crustaceans were significantly higher than those of fishes, molluscans and salted fishes (p<0.05). The As content of Turban shell was 51.62 ppm, which was the highest among the samples. Also, the As contents of eel, cuttle fish and blue crab were found to be higher than in other fisheries. This variability offers a solution for the reduction of exposure to As through restricting the harvest of aquatic organism from the western coast of Korea.

  • This study was performed to assess the levels of the Cr and Co in fisheries caught from the some areas of west coast in Korea. The samples were 26 kinds of fishes, 19 kindly of Mollusca and 3 kinds of Crustacea. They were ashed with 5 ml $HNO_3$ and then wet-decomposed with 10 ml of a mixture of $HNO_3:H_2SO_4:HClO_4$ (10:1:4). After ashing of samples, the amounts of Cr and Co in the samples were determined by ICP-AES analysis. The moisture content of molluscans was significantly higher than that of crustaceans (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference among fisheries in the Cr content. And the Co content of crustaceans was significantly higher than that of fishes and molluscans (p<0.001). There was no significance between contents of Cr and Co in fisheries. The Cr content of Arkshell was 422.00 ppm, which was the most amount compared with those of the other samples. And the Co in Myong-Ge was 3.78 ppm, which was the most amount. Areliscus honaleus (Cr:2.76 ppm, Co:0.97 ppm), Solen (Cr:6.56 ppm, Co:1.59 ppm) and dried barley shrimp (Cr:1.06 ppm, Co:0.90 ppm) contained great amount of Cr and Co.

  • In order to rehabilitate habitats for marine organisms in the slag dumping area, succession of benthic communities was monitored on artificial seaweed beds with transplantation of Ecklonia stolonifera from April 2004 to June 2005. Acinetospora critina was only primary dominated on steel frame in the first experiment (April 2004). A total of 15 species of seaweed were identified in the second experiment (June 2004). Enteromorpha intestinalis and Enteromorpha sp. were dominated, and Urospora penicilliformis, Ulothrix flacca, Cladophora sp., and Ulva pertusa were found on Ecklonia stolonifera fronds gradually with increasing time. This time was coincided with occurrence of benthic macrofaunas, molluscans and small fish species. The epiphytic benthic macrofaunas were dominated on amphipods, molluscans were Mytilus edulis, Thais clavigera, and fish species were Mugil cephalus, Pholis nebulosa. These results indicated that transplantation of Ecklonia stolonifera on artificial seaweed beds have been contributed on restoration habitats for benthic communities in the slag dumping area.

  • Benthic macroinvertebrate fauna in lower part of Han river was surveyed using ponar grab and basket sampler during May, 1995 through June, 1996.The benthic macroinvertebrates composed of 14 species, 12 families, eight orders, seven classes in three phyla. Three species of annelids, four species of molluscans, and seven species of arthropodes were collected. Annelids were collected from all sampling stations, Neanthes japonica was a dominant species. Biomass reached pick at station 4 and decreased in lower part. Biomass was so unstable that seasonal fluctuation of biomass could observed.

  • This study was performed to investigate the long-term changes in water quality and benthic ecology around the Nakdong River Estuary. The effect of the estuarine barrage on the ecosystem was also evaluated. The water quality was interpreted using the field survey (2013 and 2014) and monitoring data (MOE, 1989~2013) and the macrobenthic-fauna was investigated through analysis of the field survey data (2014) and literatures review (1985~2013). The long-term variation of water quality of Nakdong River generally showed increased nutrient concentration with decreased discharge, while abrupt influence of the barrage construction was not observed. However, the nutrient and organic matter concentration inside the barrage distinctly was higher than the concentration outside the barrage because the mixing of fresh and seawater was limited by the barrage. Especially, in the period of low discharge during winter, the Chlorophyll-a concentration clearly increased more in the downstream inside the barrage, showing the barrage effect. In other words, stagnant effect caused by barrage construction had an effect on the water quality degradation in dry seasons. As for the benthic ecology inside barrage after barrage construction, molluscans and brackish-water crustaceans disappeared. Outside the barrage, benthic ecosystem has deteriorated and the small-sized organic indicative species like Prionospio membranacea, Pseudopolydora kempi, Sinocorophium sinensis became dominant due to several construction such as Myeong-Gi Bridge, Airport construction, industrial complex after the Nakdong barrage construction.

  • This study was performed to know and compare the community structures of macrobenthic invertebrates of five fishing grounds in the coastal waters of Jeju Island from 2013 to 2015. A total of 629 species was identified. Molluscans comprised 282 species (44.8%), Arthropods 88 (14.0%), Poriferans 61 (9.7%), Bryozoans 52 (8.3%) and the others including Cnidarians 51 (8.1%). Density and biomass were estimated to be $71,007ind./m^2$ and $599,208.0gwwt/m^2$, respectively. Gastropods was the most dominant taxon in terms of abundance ($24,625ind./m^2$ ) and number of species as well, and Gastropods was predominant in biomass ($190,789.0gwwt/m^2$). The dominant species were Omphalius pfeifferi, Astralium haematragum, Musculus viridulus, Halosydna brevisetosa, Phascolosoma scolops, Herdmania monus in 5-20 m. Based on the cluster analysis, the study area could be divided into five station groups. The biodiversity, evenness and richness index appeared as follows: H' = 4.28-4.64, E' = 0.74-0.79, R = 33.17-35.45. The dominance index were highest in Sagye and lowest in Sinhung.
