  • Xerographic properties of double-layer photoconductor doped with 4-butyl-4'-methoxyazobenzene (BMAB) as charge-carrier transport material were investigated. BMAB can undergo reversible trans-cis isomerization by light with appropriate wavelength. In the results of measured surface voltage properties for photoconductor doped with BMAB, TNF: BMAB(4-wt%) sample with trans form showed the lowest dark decay, the lowest residual voltage, and the highest sensitivity among cis form. The trans isomer of BMAB has ordering orientation because the molecule possesses a rodlike shape, while the cis isomer has random orientation due to its bent shape. Therefore the molecular arrangement of trans form enhanced charge-carrier transport mobility.

  • Two angiostatic fusion proteins (hAE and hEA), differing in tandem connection manners, were constructed from human angiostatin (hAS) and endostatin (hES) proteins. These fusion proteins were then evaluated for synergistic antiangiogenic properties. The 65 kDa secreted fusion proteins, expressed in Pichia pastoris, were verified by both mass analysis and Western blotting assay. Luciferase reorter gene assay, using a VEGF promoter, revealed that the angiostatin-endostatin fusion protein (hAE), and its corresponding fusion gene delivery on human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1), resulted in a more potent synergistic antiangiogenic effect than the endostatin-angiostatin fusion protein (hEA). These results suggest that the orientation of the fusion genes in hAS and hES might be an important factor in the development of therapeutic proteins.

  • Cinnamate groups are well-known for a dimerization reaction upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation and a thermal reaction after being heated. In this study, to verify the thermal reaction of the cinnamate group in detail, we investigated the thermal crosslinking of cinnamate oligomers. The thermal reaction of cinnamate oligomers of low molecular weight is induced more readily by thermal energy compared with that of cinnamate polymers. The orientation of the liquid crystal depended on the length of the spacers in the cinnamate oligomers.

  • The effect of the polyethyledglycol(PEG) on the surface morphology and crystal orientation of electrodeposited zinc from a chloride (1.5M Zinc+7.0M chloriode) have been studied by means of electrochemical methodes, scanning electron microscopy, surface appearance measurement and X-ray diffraction patterns. The resistance of electrodeposit increased, whereas the evolution of hydrogen decreased with incrasing of molecular weight of the PEG. Large grains of electrodeposit were obtained from bath in the absence of organid additive. When the PEG was added, fine grained crystals were observed and the surface roughness was relatively small, but surface appearance deteriorated. The preferred orientation with a(101) plane parallel to the surface was obtained from the PEG addited bath.

  • Two compact sized globular proteins, β-lactoglobulin and α-lactalbumin were kinetically characterized at the aqueous solution surface with the measurement of surface pressure (π) and surface concentration (Γ) via a radiotracer method. The adsorption kinetics was of diffusion control at early times, the rates of increase of πand Γ being lower at longer times due to growing energy barrier. At low concentrations, an apparent time lag was observed in the evolution of π for β-lactoglobulin but not for α-lactalbumin which was shown to be due to the non-linear nature of the p- G relationship for the former. The area per molecule of an adsorbed β-lactoglobulin during adsorption was smaller than that for spread monolayer since β-lactoglobulin was not fully unfolded during the adsorption. For α-lactalbumin, however, no such difference in the molecular areas for adsorbed and spread monolayer was observed indicating thereby that α-lactalbumin unfolded much more rapidly (has looser tertiary structure) than β-lactoglobulin. Surface excess concentrations of α-lactalbumin was found to evolve in two steps possibly due to the change in the orientation of the adsorbed protein from a side-on to an end-on orientation.

  • The physical properties of the LB films with merocyanine dyes have been published and attract attention due to the possibility of molecular structure control. The evaluation of the thin films was focused for the purpose of molecular structure control. The molecular structure in the case of the thin films with dyes can be examine by optical absorption spectra measurements. In the result measured by optical absorption spectra, the $[DX]_{1-x}[DO]_x$ LB films shows a large in-plane anisotropy and the transition dipole moment of red-shifted band is preferentially oriented perpendicular to the dipping direction of the film, while that of the blue-shifted band prefers the dipping direction. The spectrum for $0_{\circ}$, $90_{\circ}$-polarized light coincides with the spectrum for non-polarized light and also with the spectrum was observed in the LB film deposited using a fresh solution. These results show that the aging process does not cause a structural change in chromophore but a change in the degree of molecular orientation. In the results, study of the merocyanine dyes LB films using optical absorption spectra would an interesting problem of absorbance peak shifts and mixed components.

  • The electron transfer reaction is one of the most essential processes of life. Not only does it provide the means of transforming solar and chemical energy into a utilizable form for all living organisms, it also extends into a range of metabolic processes that support the life of a cell. Thus, it is of great interest to understand the physical basis of the rates and reduction potentials of these reactions. To identify the major determinants of reduction potentials in redox proteins, we have chosen the simplest electron transfer protein, rubredoxin, a small (52-54 residue) iron-sulfur protein family, widely distributed in bacteria and archaea. Rubredoxins can be grouped into two classes based on the correlation of their reduction potentials with the identity of residue 44; those with Ala44 (ex: Pyrococcus furiosus) have reduction potentials that are ∼50 mV higher than those with Va144 (ex: Clostridium pasteurianum). Based on the crystal structures of rubredoxins from C. pasteurianum and P. furiosus, we propose the identity of residue 44 alone determines the reduction potential by the orientation of the electric dipole moment of the peptide bond between 43 and 44. Based on 1.5 $\AA$ resolution crystal structures and molecular dynamics simulations of oxidized and reduced rubredoxins from C. pasteurianum, the structural rearrangements upon reduction suggest specific mechanisms by which electron transfer reactions of rubredoxin should be facilitated.

  • In this study, we evaluated the effect of the molecular weight of the polymer on electrospun poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) nonwovens, and their mechanical properties as a function of the linear velocity of drum surface. Polymer solutions and electrospun PET nonwovens were characterized by means of viscometer, tensiometer, scanning electron microscope(SEM), wide angle X-ray diffraction measurement (WAXD) and universal testing machine (UTM). By keeping the uniform solution viscosity, regardless of molecular weight differences, electrospun PET nonwovens with similar average diameter could be obtained. In addition, the mechanical properties of the electrospun PET nonwovens were strongly dependent on the linear velocity of drum surface. From the results of the WAXD scan, it was found that the polymer took on a particular molecular orientation when the linear velocity of drum surface was increased. The peaks became more definite and apparent, evolving from an amorphous pattern at 0 m/min to peaks and signifying the presence of crystallinity at 45 m/min.

  • The regenerated silk fibroin with various molecular weights (MW) was prepared by different dissolution condition and the effect of coagulant on the wet spinnability of the various MW silk fibroin solutions dissolved in formic acid was investigated by the observation of wet spun filament in coagulant and the measurement of maximum draw ratio. The observation on the wet spun filament in coagulation bath revealed that good fibers without bead were formed in a high MW and a very high MW silk fibroin samples. In contrast, beads were observed in the silk fibroin sample with medium MW. The maximum draw ratio of wet spun silk fibroin filament decreased with MW reduction. The decrease of maximum draw ratio in isopropanol, acetone, DMF and THF was remarkably higher than that in methanol and ethanol, indicating that the coagulant type strongly influenced the wet spinnability. The two simple evaluation methods used in this study showed complementary information for wet spinnability: (a) The observation of filament in coagulant was effective to check a continuous fiber formation and a bead formation, and (b) the maximum draw ratio measurement was useful to examine the post drawing ability related to molecular orientation.
