Concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were determined in marine sediments from Mokpo coastal water of Korea. Total and toxic equivalent (TEQ) concentrations of PCDD/Fs ranged from 19.4 to 175pg/g dry weight and ranged from 0.195 to 2.87 pg WHO-TEQ/g dry weight, respectively. These PCDD/F concentrations were below the safety sediment value (20 pg TEQ/g dry weight) of chronic toxicity. A highly significant correlation between the concentrations of PCDD/Fs and total organic carbon (TOC) in marine sediments was observed. Overall PCDD/F concentrations in the sediments were elevated in rivers and at inner locations close to harbors, indicating that these contaminants derived from local discharges of human activities. PCDD/F concentrations measured in our study were lower than those in several industrialized areas in Korea. Nonparametric multidimensional scaling (MDS) ordination showed that combustion processes from industrial complexes are the major source of PCDD/Fs in Mokpo coastal water.

Mokpo coastal zone suffers from increase of tidal amplitude by the reclamation projects of Youngsan River Scadike, Youngam and Keumho Seawalls, resulting inundation oflower lands. Tidal records at Mokpo harbor show jumps just after each construction not only in the mcan high water level but also in extreme one. Thus the design water levels must be newly estimated by a frequency analysis with the data of period after the last construction. But this period is at most 6 years yet, which restrains the normal frequency analysis. In this paper, new approach of converting the past data to the present one by a numerical model is proposed. Converted 32 years and observed 6 years data enables normal frequency analysis.

An EST-based method which is applicable for estimating extreme sea levels from short sea-level records in a tide dominated coastal zone was developed. Via the method, annual maximum tidal level is chosen from the simulated 1-yr tidal data which are constituted by the independent daily high water levels, short term and long term surge heights and typhoon-induced surge heights. The high water levels are generated considering not only spring/neap tides and annual tide but also 18.6-year lunar nodal cycle. Typhoon-induced surges are selected from the training set which is constructed by observed or simulated surge heights. This yearly simulation is repeated many hundred years to yield the extreme tidal levels, and the whole process is carried out many hundred times repeatedly to get robust statistics of the levels. In addition, validation of the method is also shown by comparing the result with other researches with the tidal data of Mokpo Harbor.
Long-term trends (e.g. 1997~2010) of chlorophyll a and water quality properties of the Yeongsan River were analyzed by using water quality monitoring data collected by the water information system, ministry of environment. Nine monitoring stations were selected along the main channel of the river, and parameters of BOD, COD, TN, TP, conductivity, TSS and chlorophyll a were collected for surface water monthly through the monitoring system. Trends of water quality and chlorophyll a were analyzed by the Seasonal Mann-Kendall Test and LOWESS (Locally Weighted Scatter-plot Smoother). The results showed that the water quality parameters, including chlorophyll a, were improved in all stations except Station WC in the most-upper region, where water quality data for the determined parameters were increased, indicating a reduction in water quality. Based on the results from LOWESS analysis, chlorophyll a (algal blooms), BOD and COD recently began to increase after 2007 suggesting that an additional study on the cause of these increases in organic pollution, as well as a better management system for the region are required.

Tidal amplification by construction of the sea-dike and sea-walls had been detected not only near Mokpo Harbor but also at Chungkye Bay which is connected with Mokpo Harbor by a narrow channel. This brings about increase of tidal flat area and in particular increase of surge-wave combined runup during storms. The purpose of this study is to examine an efficient operational model that can be used by civil defense agencies for real-time prediction and fast warnings on wind waves and storm surges. Instead of using commercialized wave models such as WAM, SWAN, the wind waves are simulated by using a new concept of wavelength modulation to enhance broader application of the hyperbolic wave model of the mild-slope equation type. Furthermore, The predicting system is composed of easy and economical tools for inputting depth data of complex bathymetry and enormous tidal flats such as Mokpo coastal zone. The method is applied to Chungkye Bay, and possible inundation features at Mokpo Harbor are analyzed.
Mokpo coastal area is connected to the adjacent a long river and two large basins. It is essential for port planning coastal zone management and environmental impact study to analyze the data related to the ship operation and variation of current and water quality due to the development of water area including dredging reclamation and estuary barrage. The Yongsan river estuary weir and Yongam-Kumho basins discharge much of water through water gates for the purpose of flood control and prohibit salt intrusion at the inland fresh water area. To meet this purpose discharge through the gates have been done at the period of maximum water level difference between inner river and sea level. This discharged water may cause the changes of current pattern and other environmental influences in the vicinity and inner area of semi-closed Mokpo harbor. In this study ADI method is applied to the governing equation for the analysis of the changes on current pattern due to discharged water. As the results of this study it is known that the discharging operation causes many changes including the increase of current velocity at the front water area at piers approaching passage and anchorages. Discussion made on the point of problems such as restricted maneuverability and the safety of morred vessels at pier and anchorage. To minimize this influence the linked gate operation discharging warning system and laternative mooring system are recommended.
Tidal current and water level change in coastal waters are formulated in terms of mathematical models. A systematic discussion of the derivation of a set of governing equations, expressing conservation of mass and momentum is presented. A simplification is introduced by integrating all variables and equations over the total water depth, the Solution of the formulated problem is achieved by using the finite difference method(FDM). The applied study area is taken from Mokpo harbor and its adjacent coastal water which have significant hydrographical changes due to the construction of the estuary barrage and land reclamation work of estuary barren. Some comparisons with the observed current and water level changes the numerical solutions are found to be considerably fit well for the recent coastal water motion.

In coastal region, eutrophication, Do deficit and red tide are frequently occurred by influx of fresh water. When the fresh water containing pollutants is discharged into the sea, the surrounding water is contaminated by dispersion of freshwater flowing into coastal waters. The prediction and analysis about the dispersion process of the discharged fresh water should be conducted. A modeling system using GUI was developed to simulate hydrodynamic flow and fresh water dispersion in coastal waters and to analyze the results efficiently. The modeling module of the system includes a tide model using a finite element method and a fresh water dispersion model using a particle-tracking method. This system was applied to predict the tidal currents and fresh water dispersion in Mokpo coastal zone. To verify accuracy of the hydrodynamic model, the simulation results were compared with observed sea level and time variations of tidal currents showing a good agreement. The fresh water dispersion was verified with observed salinity distribution. The dispersion model also was verified with analytic solutions with advection-diffusion problems in 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional simple domain. The system is operated on GUI environment, to ease the model handling such as inputting data and displaying results. Therefore, anyone can use the system conveniently and observe easily and accurately the simulation results by using graphic functions included in the system. This system can be used widely to decrease the environmental disaster induced by inflow of fresh water into coastal waters.

In coastal region, tidal harmonic constants of semi-diurnal tides and nonlinear tides were collected. The observed tide data of KHOA were analyzed by a tide harmonic analysis method. In the southwestern coasts and Han river estuary, nonlinear tides are clearly generated. The generation of tide non-linearity and tide asymmetry is closely related with tide form factor in Korean coastal zone. Tide non-linearity and asymmetry in Mokpo harbour have increased by a series of coastal development projects. The increase has caused rise of high water level and drop of low water level, and increase of tidal range. In Kunsan Outport, tidal range has been declined due to inter-annual change of nonlinear tides after completion of Samangeum sea-dyke.

5000 series aluminium alloys and austenitic stainless steels have excellent corrosion resistance and sufficient strength, which are widely used as materials for marine equipment and their parts in the marine environment. The corrosion characteristics of materials are important factors for selecting the appropriate material due to fluid component changes in the estuarine and coastal areas where seawater and fresh water are mixed. Therefore, for 5083 Al alloy, STS304 and STS316L widely used in the marine environment, anodic polarization experiments were performed to compare the corrosion damage characteristics of each material by three kinds of solutions of 100 % tap water, 50 % tap water+50 % natural seawater and 100 % natural seawater. As a result of the anodic polarization experiments, aluminum alloy (5083) caused locally corrosion on the surface in the tap water, and corrosion damage occurred all over the surface when the seawater was included. Stainless steels (STS304 and STS316L) presented almost no corrosion damage in tap water, but they grew pitting corrosion damage with increasing seawater concentration. STS316L showed better corrosion resistance than STS304.
