The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between nutrients and phytoplankton. This study was done by the comparison to two costal areas Mokpo, which inflow fresh water, and Wando. In August, salinity of the sea water decreased by 3.5-4.5%o in Mokpo coastal area, but was not nearly decreased in Wando coastal area. This suggests a lot of fresh water inflow in Mokpo coastal area. DIN and DIP were decreased by water temperature increasing in Wando. However, in Mokpo, DIN and DIP were increased greatly during the summer season. Nitrogen was limited to a 10 NIP ratio especially during the summer season in Wando coastal area while phosphorus in Mokpo coastal area was limited with over 28 N/P ratio in all the seasons. Coefficient of determination$(r^2)$ between DIP and Chl.-a was 0.91 in Mokpo coastal area. On the other hand, Coefficient of determination$(r^2)$ between Chl.-a and DIN, DIP were 0.93 and 0.89, respectively, in Wando coastal area. These results suggest DIP in Mokpo and DIN and DIP in Wando might be limited at the increase of phytoplankton.
The aim of this paper is to grasp eutrophication aspects in Namhae coastal seas, statistically analyzing existing data for their surface seawater and bottom mud. A pollution level(ignition loess) of bottom mud, on the whole, trended to increase as moving the coastal sea around Mokpo-Wando toward the east(Gyeongnam Namhae coastal seas). Especially, the pollution level(ignition loss=10.5%) of bottom mud for the coastal sea around Tongyeong-Keoje-Gosung was similar to that(10.3%) for the coastal sea around Masan-Jinhae, whose coastal marine pollution was the severest in Namhae coastal seas. It indicates that large amounts of pollutant from aqualculture facilities have been, thus far, accumulated on the coastal sea around Tongyeong-Keoje-Gosung, considering there was no significant inflow of sewage and industrial wastewater into this coastal sea. A COD, T-N, and T-P level of surface seawater, on the whole trended to increase as moving the coastal sea around Mokpo-Wando toward the east(Gyeongnam Namhae coastal seas). A COD level appeared to be the second grade of coastal water quality over the entire year throughout all Namhae coastal seas A T-N level exceeded the third grade of coastal water quality throughout all Namhae coastal seas except the coastal sea around Mokpo-Wando. Especially, a T-N level exceeded as many as three and six times over the third grade of coastal water quality in the coastal sea around Tongyeong-Keoje-Gosung and Masan-Jinhae, respectively. A T-P level appeared to be the second grade of coastal water quality in the coastal sea around Mokpo-Wando and the third grade of coastal water quality in the coastal sea around Yosu-Narnhae and Tongyeong-Keoje-Gosung, while it exceeded as many as two times over the third grade of coastal water quality. A degree of eutrophication of the surface seawater was 1.5 in the coastal sea around Mokpo-Wando and 11.9 In the coastal sea around Tongyeong-Keoje-Gosung, gradually increasing as moving toward the east(Gyeongnam Narnhae coastal seas). It sharply increased to 146.1 in the coastal sea around Masan-Jinhae. Because the degree of eutrophication throughout all Namhae coastal seas exceeded 1, a red tide organism could pose a possibility of proliferation at any place of Namhae coastal seas if other requirements were satisfied. It indicates that a red tide may move to another place once a red tide breaks out at a place of Namhae coastal seas.

In this study, characteristics of fog at Mokpo as the west coastal area of Jeonnam were investigated, using statistical analysis of observed fog and meteorological data. Higher frequency of the fog occurrence at Mokpo was showed in spring(32%) and summer(34%) due to the seasonal high atmospheric pressure. Regional characteristics as radiation cooling, advection of fog and water vapor from surrounding sea and Yeongsan lake, and frontal fog had major effect on the coastal fog at Mokpo on the meteorological conditions of north-west/south wind and calm($0{\sim}2m/s$). Also, as the results of analyzing data of before and after the construction of Yeongsan dam, the frequency of annual mean fog days increased 41 %, specially increased 178% in autumn. The increase of fog days mainly resulted from evaporation during colder seasons and from temperature inversion during warmer seasons over the water surface of Yeongsan lake. The construction of Yeongsan dam had a little effect on the meteorological conditions concerning fog occurrence, because Yeongsan dam which only supplies the water for use do not always carry out outlet of the cold water. In addition, the sea fog at Heuksando located in offshore had not effect on the occurrence of fog at Mokpo.

The city of Mokpo suffers lowland inundation damages by sea water flooding even without harsh weather like a typhoon, due to the low level urban infrastructure facilities, oceanic environmental changes by constructions of seadike/seawall and sea level rise caused by global warming. This study performs constructing the simulation system which employs the MIKE21 software. And the system is applied to several typhoon- induced surges which had resulted in inundation at Mokpo. Virtual situation of flooding is simulated in case 59 cm of surge height, which had been occurred actually by RUSA(0215), coincides with Approx. H.H.W. Then the water level of 545 cm corresponds to the extreme high water level(544 cm) for 10 year return period after the construction of Geumho seawall. The results show rapid and broad inundation at Inner-Port, requiring additional preparations for flood protections.
Tidal changes in Mokpo harbor and its adjacent coastal waters caused by the coastal development including the construction of the Youngsan, Youngam, and Gumho Estuary Barrages had been predicted previously. Since then, the construction work for these estuary barrages had been completed and it was available to get water level variations from the continuous measurement at the Mokpo tidal station. This study deals with the analysis of water level variation from the observed data by the harmonic analysis and mathematical treatment. Some comparisons between the observed water level changes and the predicted by the numerical model are made, which was not supported before. The result shows that the trend of the water level changes are following well the previously predicted variations.
The change of water level at Mokpo Harbour and its adjacent coastal area due to the construction of the Youngsan Estuary Barrage and the Third Land Reclamation Work of estuary barren had been roughly expected. Periodical floods, which occur 2 times per month, are also being observed at the low lying commercial areas near the Mokpo Old Harbor. Although it is said that the highest tidal current component among the tidal current records at the approaching channel to Mokpo Harbor is reduced to 6 kts, because of the esturary barrage, they do not give any precise statement or a deep analysis for the flooding and periodical water level change under certain environmental conditions. Moreover, they never tried the analysis of development plan considering the natural disaster such as typhoon or other extreme conditions. Thus, it is necessary to collect and analyze the data related to floodings, harbor oscillations, currents, and water quality , etc. because of the development considering the extreme condition. Thus, it is necessary to collect and analyze the data related to floodings, harbor oscillations, currents, and water quality, etc. because of the development considering the extreme condition and to evaluate the field observation and measurement, including the numerical model simulation based on the scientific approaches. This study deals the problem of the water level change among the integrated analyses of the coastal area changes. The result can be used for the integrated planning to give a strong foundation and it will contribute to the development of local area.

A coupled tide-surge model, which has been evaluated the utility in the previous study, is applied for simulating the inundation phenomena. The coupled model system adopts the hydrodynamic module of MIKE21 software, and the study area is identical to the previous study. The only difference is additional detailed areas for simulating inundation. An artificial scenario of a virtual typhoon striking Mokpo coastal zone at spring high tide is simulated. Then the calculated water level corresponds to the extreme high water level(556 cm) for 100 year return period. The result also shows the inundation depth is 50~100 cm not only near the Mokpo Inner Port but also near the Mokpo North Port. Finally, the coastal inundation prediction map is drawn on the basis of inundation simulation results.

The ESCORT model is applied at Mokpo coastal zone to analyze the effect of fresh water discharge released from the gates of the Youngsan River sea-dyke. Applicability and validity of both 2-D and 3-D hydrodynamic modules could be guaranteed by simulating hydrodynamic feature with ebb dominance characteristics. Then, effects of the released discharge on the hydrodynamics are investigated. And analysis of the effects on diffusion phenomena show that 3-D model is essential for such diffusion modelling. Moreover, vertical salinity distributions near the gates are examined, and the influence range of fresh water is also estimated, which shows that dilution of fresh water is going on slowly because of poor flushing.
A study on the changes of the oceanographical environment caused by Mokpo coastal zone development was carried out. Special emphasis was placed on the clarification of the water level changes and coastal current structure and influence of the environmental factors on the coastal area. In order to understand the structure oceangraphical environemnt, such as water temperature, salinity, suspended solids, pH, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, distribution of bottom sediment, tide and current were measured. To investigated the structure of tide and current for the future development, a numerical analysis was carried out. In certain zones, it was found to be flooding problems near the lowlying commercial area.
During the period of past fifteen years (1992~2006), variations of chlorophyll a in relation with water quality in freshwater reservoirs were investigated. This study compared total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chlorophyll a, Secchi depth (SD) and total suspended solids (TSS) between terrestrial freshwater reservoir and coastal freshwater reservoir systems based on their location. Regression analyses (linear and non-linear regressions) were applied for all study sites to examine relationship and interaction of these factors in the freshwater systems from in-land to coasts. The results demonstrated that chlorophyll a was significantly correlated to total phosphorus ($R^2=0.94$, P<0.0001) and was remarkably related to TSS increase ($R^2=0.63$, P<0.0001) in the selected reservoirs. The TN : TP ratio in the reservoir systems was higher than Redfield ratio (16 : 1) indicating that the reservoirs are potentially experiencing P limitation. Water quality of coastal freshwater reservoir system was more significantly decreased than the reservoirs located in in-land during the past fifteen years. The strict management of nutrient discharge into freshwater systems should implemented in the coastal reservoirs since the freshwater is introduced into coastal estuarine systems.
