  • This paper describes two kinds of personal hand-held electronic devices to enhance marine leisure safety. The one is Radar response-type safety device triggering by the pulse signal from a commercial 9GHz-band Radar to provide quick search and rescue with combined civilian-government-military fleets. The other one is M-RFID (Marine Radio Frequency IDentification) based safety electronic device using 900MHz Tx/Rx with spread spectrum frequency hopping and GPS. Through the field tests at sea using Korea Coast Guard's warship the operating performances are verified. Further plan for practical use of each device was also discussed.

  • In this study, the community structure of marine benthic invertebrates was examined to evaluate the differences between the west, south, and east coasts of Korea and to identify the indicator species representing each region. Acrylic attachment plate sets were installed in Jeongok, Mokpo, Tongyeong, Yangpo, and Gangreung, and the invertebrate fauna thus captured were identified. Monitoring was performed in each area from March 2017 to May 2018. Water depth, temperature, and salinity at each location were measured to determine the potential influence of abiotic factors on the community structure. As a result, the mean depth of plates installed and the water temperature were significantly different in each area. A total of 32 invertebrate species were identified in all localities, and the most significant difference in the species compositions was found between Mokpo and Gangreung. The community structure differed significantly with a change in the plate depth, and a larger number of indicator species appeared on shallower plates. Finally, we determined the community structure of benthic invertebrates in different geographical regions of the Korean ocean by characterizing the dominant invertebrate taxa and the indicator species at each site.

  • The "ship's routeing" system was adopted by IMO and has been operated on the major sea routes of all over the world for the prevention of marine casualty and the improvement of marine traffic flow. Thereupon, also in Korea, the "Hong-do" and "Bogil-do" sea routes on southern coast were designated to mandatory sea area by traffic separation scheme(TSS) in 2003, and the "Geomun-do" sea route on southern coast was designated in 2005. But there were few or no studies on the effect of designated traffic separation scheme in Korea. For this reason, in this paper, we evaluated the contribution of traffic separation scheme to the prevention of marine casualty and the improvement of marine traffic flow after designation of domestic traffic separation scheme using data of the marine casualties and ship's tracks from AIS information. The results of evaluation showed that on the contrary, the cases of marine casualties were increased on some sea routes and regular traffic flows were disturbed by some vessels after designation of traffic separation scheme. For the safer and better sea routes, alternative ideas such as reposition of ship's routing on "Hong-do" and "Bogil-do" sea areas were suggested.

  • Most of the current administrative names and locations for the names of places in the Nanjung diary have since been confirmed. However, a disagreement ensued among translators or researchers over Anpyeon-do (Baleum-do) islet recorded in Admiral Yi Sun-Shin's diary. Anpyeon-do was first recorded in the diary on October 11, 1597. It is credited to be the location where Yi Sun-shin and Chosun Naval Fleet stayed when sailing along the Southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula after the battle of Myeongnyang. However, Anpyeon-do's exact geographical location has never been accurately confirmed. To accurately locate the islet, this study compared the direction and position of geographical locations observed in the Anpeon-do site match to actual geographical positions and directions. In addition, the direction and position of the geographical locations observed in the newly explored islands and mountains were evaluated with regard to how they correspond to the actual Anpeon-do. As a result, we concluded that the real location of Anpyeon-do recorded in the Nanjung diary is the Maebong mountain in Anjwa-do.

  • About 21% of domestic chemical accidents are caused by transport vehicles for the past 10 years in Korea. Also, ammonia is a chemical substance with the largest number of accidents, 82 out of 672. In this study, supposed seasonal alternative scenario and worst scenario in case of releasing ammonia during bunkering it from tank lorry to fishing vessel and interpreted seasonal impact and range through Python, ALOHA, Probit analysis. Radiation impact range of possibility for 2nd burn and for maximum radiation in winter scenario, which is one of the alternative scenarios, was the highest(range: 41m, radiation: 5.01kW/m2) while overpressure impact was less than minimum standard of impact. And toxicity impact range(EPRG-2) of the summer scenario was the widest(5.0km) and took a very high death rate near accident area(port area, tourist area) according to Probit analysis. the wort scenario had a similar impact and range of summer scenario.

  • Recently, rising tendency of high water level is detected at southwestern coast. The result of harmonic analysis shows increasing trend of mean sea level, decreasing trend of the amplitudes of semi-diurnal tidal constituents, and increase of Sa tidal constituent, therefore, additional increase of high water level at Summer season. It shows also that maximum surge level has increased greatly, according to the frequent visit of big typhoon such as RUSA and MAEMI. Considering the correspondence of Sa and typhoon period, namely July${\sim}$September, extraordinary high water level would be more probable. Especially, Mokpo and Jeju would be considered to have many chances of extraordinary high water level in the future.

  • Tunicates are known to contain biologically active materials and one species in particular, the sea peach (Halocynthia aurantium), has not been thoroughly studied. In this study we aimed to analyze the fatty acids profile of the H. aurantium body wall and its immunomodulatory effects on RAW264.7 macrophage-like cells. The fatty acids were classified into three categories: saturated fatty acids (SFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Omega-3 fatty acid content, including EPA and DHA, was higher than omega-6 fatty acids. H. aurantium body wall fatty acids exhibited enhanced immune response and anti-inflammatory effects on RAW264.7 macrophage-like cells. Under normal conditions, fatty acids significantly increase nitric oxide (NO) and PGE2 production in a dose-dependent manner, thereby improving the immune response. On the other hand, in LPS-treated RAW264.7 cells, fatty acids significantly decreased nitric oxide (NO) and PGE2 production in a dose-dependent manner, thereby enhancing anti-inflammatory effects. Fatty acids transcriptionally control the expression of the immune-associated genes, iNOS, IL-1β, IL-6, COX-2, and TNF-α, via the MAPK and NF-κB signaling cascades in RAW264.7 cells. However, in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, H. aurantium body wall fatty acids significantly inhibited expression of inflammatory cytokine; similarly, production of COX-2 and PGE2 was inhibited. The results of our present study provide insight into the immune-improving and anti-inflammatory effects of H. aurantium body wall fatty acids on macrophages. In addition, our study demonstrates that H. aurantium body wall is a potential source of immune regulatory components.

  • The port of Mokpo operates the largest number of coastal passenger ships and routes in Korea. These coastal passenger ships pass through narrow channels in the south-west coast of Korea owing to the geographical effect. It is difficult to find a research for the safety of the marine traffic environment in the narrow channel used by coastal passenger ship. Therefore, in this study, the navigation safety of the target coastal passenger ship was analyzed in the narrow channel near the port of Mokpo using the Korea design standard for port and harbour facilities. As a result of the analysis, the width of the narrow channel between Maek-island and Dali-island is narrower than 1.5 times of the target ship's length over all, the degree of curvature of the narrow channel exceeds the standard value of 30°, and several fishing gears exist near the narrow channel. Finally, the following were suggested to improve the safety of navigation on the narrow channel: keeping one-way traffic during the day-time, and navigating through the designated fairway during night·visibility restriction·low tide.

  • The fact that tidal residuals are detected greatly at the tide-dominated region implies that tide component has still remained in the tidal residual. Auto-correlation function analysis also show that the auto-correlation coefficients are conspicuous near tidal periods at the Western Coast. A wavelet method was used to analyze characteristics of the short period or tide-relevant residuals. Considering the results that tidal period is prominent at the tide-dominated region, that seasonal variation is trivial at the short periods, and that shallow tidal period is conspicuous at Mokpo, the short period can be considered to be correlated with tide modulated surge. The result also shows short period components stem mainly from tide-forecasting error and tide-surge interaction. Thus tide modulated surge must be distinguished from meteorological surge.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation to figure out slamming impact pressure and flow characteristics of a rectangular Marine structure($800{\times}250{\times}50mm^3$) in free fall. The flow field has been obtained by 2-frame grey level cross correlation PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) method, the impact pressure of the free fall model by a pressure acquisition system(Dewatron). The angles between a model and the free surface are adapted $10^{\circ}$ and $20^{\circ}$ respectively. Velocity field of water exit has higher better than water entry. The highest point, P2 of impact pressure under the bottom of the model has been appeared about 6 % higher values at 20 degrees than 10 degrees.
