In general, the behavior of moisture transmission is estimated by vapor permeability or vapor transmission resistance, but its values obtained by experiments do not have great adaptability for practical situations because of changes in the experimental conditions. This fact is why only theoretical discussions have advanced. Thus, the fundamental study of the moisture transmission phenomenon has been treated lightly. Here, as the first step toward the basic research of moisture transmission, the amount of moisture transmission and the moisture distribution in specimens were investigated. The experiment was conducted in a steady state, and the moisture distribution was measured by slicing and weighing the specimens. From the examination of the vapor transmission resistance, the phenomenon of moisture transmission was dealt with devide the moisture transfer on the wood surface and moisture diffusion in wood. The following results were obtained. 1) The phenomenon of moisture transmission should be approached by its division into moisture transfer on the wood surface and moisture diffusion in the wood because the positive values of vapor transmission resistance exist in the extrapolation of thickness 0mm. 2) The distribution of moisture in wood can be illustrated by two straight lines intersecting at the point of nine percent moisture content : namely, diffusion coefficients have two constant values at moisture contents below and above nine percent. The shape of the distribution curve of moisture content is similar irrespective of the wood thickness. On the other hand, when the moisture contents on both sides was more than nine percent, the distribution of the moisture content could be illustrated by one straight lines. 3) The amount of moisture movement is determined by the moisture gradient in wood. 4) Coefficients of the moisture transfer depend on the thickness of the specimens.
This study was carried out to know the difference of vapor transmission on the thickness of Paulownia wood(Paulownia tomentosa). The behavior of moisture transmission of wood thickness direction is generally estimated by vapor permeability and vapor transmission resistance. In general, Paulownia wood is known to use of inside material for furniture making, because of the excellent ability of vapor adsorption and/or desorption. Quarter sawing Paulownia wood material is prepared and the thickness is 6.0mm, 7.0mm, 8.0mm, 9.0mm, 10.0mm, respectively. The measurement of vapor transmission were conducted by the "cup method" in accordance with JIS(Japanese Industrial Standard) Z-0208. The experiment was made in the condition of 49.8mmHg vapor pressure difference and $40^{circ}C$ at constant temperature. From the experiment results, it was considered that Paulownia wood is very stable on moisture variation and any other material conditions. In this experiment we found that the vapor permeability and vapor permeance was reduced with the increase of wood thickness to vapor direction and vapor transmission resistance and specific vapor transmission resistance was increased with the increase of wood thickness to vapor direction. Besides moisture contents of adsorption and desorption side were about 5 percent and 14 percent, respectively. Mean value was 9.5 percent and about 10 percent in dry oven method. Moisture gradient was reduced with the increase of wood thickness for a small moisture difference of adsorption and desorption side.
The amount of moisture transmitted under four different humidity conditions was measured in earlywood and latewood for Cryptomeria japonica(LT specimens). The results obtained are summarized as follows. The vapor permeability in eariywood was about three times larger than that of latewood. The vapor permeabilities in earlywood and late wood depended on the average moisture content of the wood. This indicates that moisture transmission is influenced by vapor permeability or vapor-transmission resistance, but the values obtained by experiments do not have great adaptability for practical situations because of changes in the experimental conditions. There fore, it is necessary to know the moisture content along the flow direction in order to explain the moisture transmission of wood. The vapor permeability was calculated using the density in air dried wood. These were then compared with the experimental values. The vapor permeabilities calculated with this density in the radial direction(LR specimen) had a good tendency to agree with the experimental values, but not so in tangential direction(LT specimen).

The function of the moisture-proof paper is to prevent moisture from adsorbing into the packed goods. Water-vapor transmission rate of the moisture-proof paper should be less than 100g/$m^2$.24hr and the optimum rate would be less than 50g/$m^2$.24hr. In general the moisture-proof paper has been made by laminating polyethylene or polypropylene on top of the base paper. However this kind of moisture-proof paper has a problem in recycling so that it brings about environmental pollution. In general the moisture-proof paper has been made by laminating polyethylene or polypropylene on top of the base paper. However this kind of moisture-proof paper has a problem in recycling so that it brings about environmental pollution. The purpose of this paper was to make moisture-proof paper using the mixture of SB latex and wax emulsion which was recyclable and environmentally friendly. Water vapor transmission rate showed less than 50g/$m^2$.24hr in mixture ratio of 85:15, 87:13, 90:10. Especially the mixture ratio of 87:13 showed the most favorable water-vapor transmission rate. However, the moisture-proof layer was destroyed slightly by folding in packing. It has been observed that there was no close relationship between water-vapor transmission rate of the moisture-proof paper and grammage of the base paper, but the density of base paper had influenced on water vapor transmission rate. It was also observed that the moisture-proof paper could be recycled. The moisture-proof paper was similar to base paper in degree of the pulping, and there was no significant difference in dispersion between moisture-proof paper and base paper. Most of wax particles which caused the spots during drying process could be removed by flotation process. Tensile strength and tear strength of both moisture-proof paper and base paper after pulping were measured to examine the fiber bonding, and no significant difference in physical properties was observed.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the mechanism of moisture transfer depend on the thickness of the spruce(Picea sitchensis Carr.). Therefore, as the basic research of moisture transmission, the amount of moisture transmission and the moisture distribution in specimens and temperature of it's surfaces in vapor transmission process were investigated. The experiment was conducted in a steady state. and the moisture distribution was measured by knife cutting and weighing the specimens. The following conclusions were obtained ; 1. It can be found that distribution of moisture in the specimen can be approximated by two different straight lines intersecting at nine or ten percent moisture content. The amount of moisture movement defends on the gradient of moisture in the wood. 2. It is investigated that the wood surface moisture contents(MCs) are less for thinner specimens than for thick ones on the absorption side. On the other hand, the wood surface MCs are greater for thinner specimens than for thick ones on the desorption side. The main factor that affects the EMC of wood would be temperature when the relative humidity of atmosphere is constant. The specimen generate heat with the absorption and desorption process. In addition, the velocities of moisture transmission varied with the thicknesses of specimens. If the temperature of wood becomes greater, its MC decreases. Then the difference between surface MC and EMC of adsorption and desorption side becomes greater for thinner specimens. Therefore it is considered that the coefficients of moisture transfer decreases with the increases of the specimens' thicknesses.
Nondestructive testing(NDT) by using ultrasonic sound is widely applied to wood for grading, moisture and defect detecting, estimating degree of decay, etc. Before practicing such application, basic relationships between ultrasonic transmission and wood properties shall be studied first. In this study, ultrasonic NDT was applied to larch and red pine to investigate the effects of moisture content and slope of grain on ultrasonic transmission speed. Specimens for testing about moisture content were prepared to have moisture content of green state, 30%, 20%, 10% and oven-dry state. Specimens for testing about slope of grain were prepared to have grain angle of 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 degree in the tangential direction. Ultrasonic transmission speed was inversely proportional to moisture content in low range of moisture content under around 30% that was considered to be close to fiber saturation point. In high moisture content range above 30%, the ultrasonic transmission speed was almost constant. The same trend was observed in the relationships between compressive strength and moisture content. Slope of grain also had inversely proportional relationship with ultrasonic transmission speed and compressive strength. The relationship between compressive strength and ultrasonic transmission speed could be expressed by a linear equation.
This research is performed to investigate the changes in the physicochemical properties and microbial growths of seasoned anchovies with various packaging materials (PET/CPP : polyethylene terephthalate/cast polypropylene, PET/EVOH : polyethylene terephthalate/ethylene-vinyl alcohol, PET/AL/LDPE: polyethylene terephthalate/aluminum/low density polyethylene), which are stored at various temperatures (25, 35, $45^{\circ}C$) for 60 days. Generally, it is being observed that changes in physicochemical properties (i.e., moisture content, color, brown intensity, TBA value, TMA, VBN etc) of seasoned anchovies are significant when stored at higher temperatures. Particularly, the packaging materials are found to influence substantially on the physicochemical properties of seasoned anchovies. With packaging materials of high oxygen transmission rates and moisture vapor transmission rates (i.e., PET/CPP), the changes in physicochemical properties of seasoned anchovies are significant, while being low with low oxygen transmission rates and low moisture vapor transmission rates (i.e., PET/EVOH). In addition, results of microbial growths in seasoned anchovies show that significant increases in total aerobic bacteria counts (about 100-fold after 60 day of storage) are observed in samples with packaging materials of high oxygen transmission rates and moisture vapor transmission rates (i.e, PET/CPP), while with only small increases for samples of low oxygen transmission rates and low moisture vapor transmission rates (i.e., PET/EVOH). Based on the changes in the physicochemical properties and results of microbial growths, it is being concluded that PET/EVOH film is suitable for the packaging of seasoned anchovies.
This study was conducted to develop a grain moisture meter using microwave free space transmission technique at X-band frequency. The 10.5GHz microwave oscillator using a dielectric resonator was designed and fabricated to transmit electromagnetic wave through standard horn antenna to a sample holder with the wetted Hwasung and Chuchung rough rice(12.00∼26.25%). To detect the output voltage of transmitted wave from receiving horn antenna, the detector was composed of shottkey diode and RF impedance matching circuit. The regression model for measurement of grain moisture content was developed. Its correlation coefficient and standard error of prediction (SEP) were found to be 0.9882 and 0.657 respectively between measure and predicted moisture contents.
When diagnostic ultrasounds are used, an ultrasonic transmission media is used to effectively transmit the ultrasonic energy. Types of ingredients of polymer hydro gel, emulsion, and oil gel were compared with commercialized products by measuring characteristics of ultrasonic transmission media such as skin lubricity, skin moisturizing, and dryness speed which were contained in each different media. The mean friction coefficient measured to investigate skin lubricity showed high in the agent containing a large amount of oil, whereas the mean friction coefficient of the low viscosity emulsion did not show a significant difference with that of the polymer hydro gel. The moisture evaporation measured to investigate the dryness speed of the agent showed highest in polymer hydro gel. This showed that the larger amount of oil it had, the less moisture evaporation occurred. For skin moisture measured to investigate moisturizing characteristics of skin, low viscosity emulsion showed high in moisture content, whereas it showed slowest reduction in moisture content. As a type of emulsion appropriately containing water and oil is superior in skin moisturizing and skin tenderness, it is expected to serve as a dosage form of new ultrasonic transmission media.
This study concerns the distribution and dependence of moisture content(MC) in wood for same thickness in different vapor transmission conditions. The specimens were disks of 70-mm in diameter and 20-mm in thickness from quartersawn lumber of Korean red pine(Pinus densiflora S. et Z.). The experiments were conducted in ten different conditions on the difference of the vapor pressures by the JIS Z-0208. The distribution of moisture content in wood can be illustrated by two straight lines intersecting at the point of about ten percent Me. On the other hand, when more or less than about 10 percent, the distribution of the Me can be illustrated by one straight lines. Therefore, it is considered that the values of 10 percent Me has no relation to the wood and experimental conditions. It's assumed that 10 percent is the boundary point at which the moisture sorption energy changes. In a previous study, diffusion coefficient is almost constant with no relation to a thickness of the woods for the constant experimental conditions. But, in this study, it seems that diffusion coefficient from the moisture gradient vary with the Me of wood in different vapor transmission conditions.
