This study was conducted to know the effect of soil moisture content on growth of aerial parts and root of Valeriana fauriei var. dayscarpa HARA in pot condition. The soil moisture contents were 30, 45, 55, 70, 80 and 90% of maximum water requirement. The result obtained are as follows; 1. Width and length of leaves in valerian were slightly increased with increase the soil moisture content, however, length of petiole and root were increased with soil moisture content up to 80%. 2. It showed the positive correlations between moisture content and root weight and extract content in root. 3. Optimum soil moisture content was 80 to 90% of maximum water requirement.
Purpose: The high energy requirement of extraction of oil from jatropha seed and reduction of loss in oil content between whole seed and kernel of jatropha necessitate seed shelling. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the performance of a jatropha seed shelling machine based on seed moisture content. Methods: A shelling machine was designed and constructed for jatropha seed. The components are frame, hopper, shelling chamber, concave, and blower with discharge units. The performance evaluation of the machine was carried out by determining parameters such as percentage of whole kernel recovered, percentage of broken kernel recovered, percentage of partially shelled seed, percentage of unshelled seed, machine capacity, machine efficiency, and shelling efficiency. All of the parameters were evaluated at five different moisture levels: 8.00%, 9.37%, 10.77%, 12.21%, and 13.68% w.b.). Results: The shelling efficiency of the machine increased with increase in seed moisture content; the percentage of whole kernel recovered and percentage of partially shelled seed decreased with increase in moisture content; and percentage of broken kernel, machine efficiency, and percentage of unshelled seed followed a sinusoidal trend with moisture content variation. Conclusion: The best operating condition for the shelling machine was at a moisture content of 8.00% w.b., at which the maximum percentage of whole kernel recovered was 23.23% at a shelling efficiency of 73.95%.
The effects of pellet moisture content on physical properties (expansion ratio, density and breaking strength) of vacuum-puffed Yukwa (non-oil puffed Yukwa) were investigated in this study. The Yukwa was made from the waxy rice steeped at 25 and $30^{\circ}C$ for 3, 5 and 10 days with pellet drying times (6, 8 and 10.5 hr). As the drying time increased from 6 to 10.5 hr at $50^{\circ}C$, the highest value of pellet moisture content (29.4%) was found in the samples made from the steeped waxy rice at $25^{\circ}C$ for 5 days after 6 hr drying, while the lowest value (16.3%) was found at $25^{\circ}C$ for 3 days after 10.5 hr drying. Both redness and yellowness values of vacuum-puffed Yukwa increased as the drying time increased. The expansion ratio of Yukwa was greatly affected by drying time, ranging from 2.07 (26.8% pellet moisture content) to 7.01 (24.0% pellet moisture content). From the data, it can be concluded that the pellet moisture content had a significant influence on the physical characteristics of vacuum-puffed Yukwa. With vacuum puffing condition of 3 min heating and 2 min puffing, the pellets with about 25% moisture content showed higher expansion ratio, and lower density and breaking strength.
Changes in viscosity and dynamic theological properties of Job's-tears were measured by Bohlin dynamic tester as a function of moisture, and measurement was performed within a linear viscoelastic range. The result of the shear stress vs shear rate of Job's-tears at different moisture contents $(50{\sim}75%)$ was applied to mathematical models and Herschel-Bulkley model showed the highest correlation coefficient. Lower moisture content (55%) produced higher yield stress and consistency index, but lower flow behavior index, whereas higher moisture content showed reverse effects. Job's-tears with $50{\sim}70%$ moisture contents showed a higher storage modulus (G') than loss modulus (G') at all frequencies, showing a higher concentrated polymer characteristics. However, higher moisture content (>75%) showed crossover point between G' and G', and frequency dependency. As the moisture content was increased, the amount of viscoelastic properties such as G', G', complex viscosity decreased during heating, and initial temperature and miximum value of viscoelastic properties shifted to higher temperatures, representing the moisture-dependence of Job's-tears upon theological properties.

Recently, various tourist products using hanok have increased rapidly. In the meantime, there is a steady demand for Hanok architecture. However, there are many negative perceptions about wood deformation and biodeterioration. Wood deformation and biodeterioration are related to moisture content. And the cracks occur in the process of removing water from the wood. Therefore, this study investigates the moisture content and cracks of dried hanok made of wood according to the drying method of wood. Drying methods include natural seasoning and artificial seasoning. There was a difference in moisture removal depending on drying period and method of natural seasoning. Drying time should be about 3 years for natural seasoning, so the moisture content of the wood is stable. In addition, the moisture absorption rate was low even in a humid environment where the voids were removed. However, natural seasoning is time consuming. Artificial seasoning, on the other hand, can quickly remove moisture from the wood and reduce porosity, but it is costly. Cracks that occur during the drying of wood may become problematic in appearance and stability due to wider spacing over time. As a result, the difference in the moisture content of the timber depending on the drying method and drying period of the wood was maintained even after the formation. These gaps appeared to be differences in moisture absorption in a wet environment.
Peat soil has the characteristics of high moisture content, large void ratio and low shear strength. In this study, unconfined compressive strength and SEM tests are conducted to investigate the effects of ultrahigh moisture content, cement content, organic content and pH value on the strength of solidified peat. As an increase in the cement content and curing period, the failure mode of solidified peat soil changes from ductile failure to brittle failure. The influence of moisture content on the strength of solidified peat is greater than the cement content. As cement content increases from 10% to 30%, strength of solidified peat at a curing age of 28 days increases by 161%~485%. By increasing water content by 100%, decreases of solidified peat at a curing age of 28 days is 42%~79%. Compared with the strength of solidified peat with a pH value of 5.5, the strength of peat with a pH value of 3.5 reduces by 10% ~ 46%, while the strength of peat with a pH value of 7.0 increases by 8% ~ 38%. It is recommended to use filler materials for stabilizing peat soil with moisture content greater than 200%. Because of small size of clay particles, clay added in the cement solidified peat can improve much higher strength that that of sand.
This research was attempted to investigate changes in physicochemical properties of rice extrudate with added ginger powder extruded by single screw extruder. Graphic three dimensional analysis on response surface regression was used to evaluate effects of extrusion variables on quality factors of the extrudate according to two independent variables, ginger consent 0∼12%, moisture content 14∼26%. The summarized results are as follows : 1) Regarding proximate composition of rice extrudate with added ginger powder, as ginger powder content of raw material Increased, crude tat, crude protein, crude ash and crude fiber increased, while soluble nitrogen free extract decreased. 2) Graphic three dimensional analysis on response surface regression was conducted for each dependent variable which revealed statistically significant relationship with independent variables, 0∼120A ginger and 14∼26% moisture content. Expansion ratio had a critical point as moisture content changed. As ginger and moisture content Increased, bulk density, break strength and water absorption Index Increased, while water solubility Index decreased. The predicted maximum degree of gelatinization in 6.15% ginger and 15.56% moisture content is 88.27%, and lightness decreased as ginger content Increased. According to the microstructure for the cross section of extrudate obsorbed with image analyzer, air cell number and perimeter revealed saddle point, meanwhile total area and fractarea of air cell had critical points as moisture content changed. In view of the results, quality of rice extrudate with added ginger powder was optimum when rice flour was fed to the extruder with 2∼7% singer powder and 15∼20% moisture content.
This experiment has been made to investigate the absorption of watersoluble zinc chloride by Pinus densiflora S. et Z. at different moisture content, under soaking process, to decide the optimum content condition for the maximum absorption of zinc chloride by the wood tested and to investigate the concentration of zinc chloride affecting each moisture content of wood. Material was cut in the Dept. of Forest, College of Agr. S.N.U. Suwon, Korea. Sample was divided into sap and heartwood group and cut $2{\times}2{\times}2\;cm$ in size, having exact three dimensions, using the part of D.B.H. The numbers of sample were 20 pieces for each moisture content condition for both sap and heartwood. Especially, the samples were protected from exposure to keep moisture content in green condition. The ranges of moisture content tested were as the table 3 and 4. The conclusions were as follows: 1. With 3% zinc chloride solution, the rate of absorption decreased with the time increased, if the air seasoned Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) was treated in steeping process. Initial absorption for 30 minutes was more than 50% of total absorpon for 24 hours. 2. Rate of absorption was same under the green condition, while rate of absorption under the moisture content 7 to 30% varied. 3. Although it was not quite proportional change in the absorption with the difference of moisture content, the great change in the absorption occured by seasoning. With exception sap green condition, sapwood twice more permeable than the heartwood in the oven dried condition and it has been observed the nearly same amount of absorption at the moisture content of 7%, 10% and 15% respectively in heartwood. 4. It was better from water in wood from view-point of absorption of zinc chloride solution, but it was difficult practically to obtain the smallest moisture content, and then it was decided that values of allowable moisture content, on the basis of mean absorption, were 15% to 20% in the sapwood, and in the heartwood, 10% to 15%. The mean absorption for each moisture content in the sap and the heartwood were as following. 5. In general, the concentration of zinc chloride after steeping was nearly same between moisture content and sap and heartwood respectively.
Milling the rice with low moisture requires more energy, produces more cracked rice, and results in reducing taste of cooked rice. Accordingly, it is necessary to add moisture to the rice with low moisture to obtain optimum moisture level for milling and taste of rice. This study was performed to evaluate the influence of initial moisture content and absorption rate on rice crack, milling energy and whiteness of milled rice and to obtain the information for design of rewetting system mounted on stirring device in grain bin. The tests were conducted for the four levels of initial moisture content in the range of 11.4 to 14.5%(w.b.) and six levels of absorption rate in the range of 0.04 to 1.0%, w.b./hr. In the case of lower moisture content below 12%(w.b.), crack ratios of brown rice were remarkably high regardless of initial moisture contents. Therefore, it was found that rough rice below 12%(w.b.) in initial moisture content could not rewetted by spraying water without crack generation of low level. Absorption rate must be below 0.3%, w.b./hr to maintain crack ratio increase of less than 1% regardless of initial moisture contents. In the case of allowable crack ratio increase of 2% and 5%, it was found that the maximum absorprion rate was respectively 0.6%, w.b./hr and 1.0%, w.b./hr in the initial moisture content of above 13.5%(w.b.). Rewetting the rough rice in moisture content of 11.4 to 14.5%(w.b.) to 14.3 to 16.9%(w.b.) decreased milling energy consumption by 15.9 to 22.3%. The effect of energy saving was higher in the samples of higher initial moisture content. Whiteness of milled rice was decreased by 0.5 to 1.5.

A ground-based microwave scatterometer has an advantage for monitoring soil moisture content using multi-polarization, multi-frequencies and various incidence angles. In this paper, ground-based multi-frequency (L-, C-, and X-band) polarimetric scatterometer system capable of making observations every 10 min was used to monitor the soil moisture conditions in a corn field over an entire growth cycle. Measurements of volumetric soil moisture were obtained and their relationships to the backscatter observations were examined. Time series of soil moisture content was not corresponding with backscattering coefficient pattern over the whole growth stage, although it increased until early July (Day Of Year, DOY 160). We examined the relationship between the backscattering coefficients from each band and soil moisture content of the field. Backscattering coefficients for all bands were not correlated with soil moisture content when considered over the entire stage ($r{\leq}0.48$). However, L-band Horizontal transmit and Horizontal receive polarization (HH) had a good correlation with soil moisture ($r=0.85^{**}$) when LAI was lower than 2. Prediction equations for soil moisture were developed using the L-HH data. Relation between L-HH and soil moisture shows linear pattern and related with soil moisture content ($R^2=0.77$). Results from this study show that backscattering coefficients of microwave scatterometer appear to be effective to estimate soil moisture content in the field level.
