Nanocrystalline diamond(NCD) coated aluminium plates were prepared and applied as heat sinks for LED modules. NCD films were deposited on 1 mm thick Al plates for times of 2 - 10 h in a microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition reactor. Deposition parameters were the microwave power of 1.2 kW, the working pressure of 90 Torr, the $CH_4/Ar$ gas ratio of 2/200 sccm. In order to enhance diamond nucleation, DC bias voltage of -90 V was applied to the substrate during deposition without external heating. NCD film was identified by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The Al plates with about 300 nm thick NCD film were attached to LED modules and thermal analysis was carried out using Thermal Transient Tester (T3ster) in a still air box. Thermal resistance of the module with NCD/Al plate was 3.88 K/W while that with Al plate was 5.55 K/W. The smaller the thermal resistance, the better the heat emission. From structure function analysis, the differences between junction and ambient temperatures were $12.1^{\circ}C$ for NCD/Al plate and $15.5^{\circ}C$ for Al plate. The hot spot size of infrared images was larger on NCD/Al than Al plate for a given period of LED operation. In conclusion, NCD coated Al plate exhibited better thermal spreading performance than conventional Al heat sink.
We devised a procedure for the recovery of silicon and tempered glass from waste photovoltaic (PV) modules using optimized conditions. The tempered glass was recovered without any damage using organic solvents. The surface material is removed by applying an acid solution on the surface of the PV cell. Through our proposed method, we offer a much more efficient approach for recycling solar cells with a surfactant than the conventional method. This process, we obtained pure silicon with a yield of 90% by chemical treatment with the surfactant at room temperature for 18 min. The silicon yield was characterized using an inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer.
This study investigated effects of physical and chemical cleaning methods on the initial flux recovery of fouled membrane in membrane distillation process. A laboratory scale direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) experiment was performed to treat digested livestock wastewater with 3.89 mg/L suspended solids, 874.7 mg/L COD, 543.7 mg/L nitrogen, 15.6 mg/L total phosphorus, and pH of 8.6. A hydrophobic PVDF membrane with an average pore size of $0.22{\mu}m$ and a porosity of 75 % was installed inside a direct contact type membrane distillation module. The temperature difference between feed and permeate side was maintained at $40^{\circ}C$ with the feed and permeate stream velocity of 0.18 m/s. The results showed that the permeate flux decreased from $22.1L{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}hr^{-1}$ to $19.0L{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}hr^{-1}$ after 75 hours of distillation. The fouled membrane was cleaned first by physical flushing and consecutively by chemicals with NaOCl and citric acid. After the physical cleaning the flux was recovered to 92 % as compared with the initial clean water flux of the virgin membrane. Then 94 % of the flux was recovered after cleaning by 2,000 ppm NaOCl for 90 minutes and finally 97 % of flux recovered after 3 % citric acid for 90 minutes. SEM-EDS and FT-IR analysis results presented that the foulants on the membrane surface were removed effectively after each cleaning step. The contact angle measurement showed that the hydrophobicity of the membrane surface was also restored gradually after each cleaning step to reach nearly the same hydrophobicity level as the virgin membrane.

In this research, hollow fiber membranes were used in order to investigate to permeation and selectivity of the $CH_4$ and $N_2$. Polyimide and polyethersulfone hollow fiber membrane were prepared by the dry-wet phase inversion method and the module was manufactured by fabricating fibers after surface coating with silicone elastomer. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies showed that the produced fibers typically had an asymmetric structure. The permeance of $CH_4$ and $N_2$ were increased with pressure and temperature. However, the selectivity was decreased with increasing temperature. The permeances of $CH_4$ and $N_2$ were decreased with increasing the air gap and the effect of post-treatment on membrane showed the increase in permeance up to 3.2~7.0 times.

Degree days have been determined using temperature data measured at nearby weather stations to a site of interest to produce information for supporting decision-making on agricultural production. Alternatively, the data products of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) can be used for estimation of degree days in a given region, e.g., Korean Peninsula. The objective of this study was to develop a simple tool for processing the MODIS product for estimating cooling degree days (CDD), which would help assessment of heat stress conditions for a crop as well as energy requirement for greenhouses. A set of scripts written in R was implemented to obtain temperature profile data for the region of interest. These scripts had functionalities for processing spatial data, which include reprojection, mosaicking, and cropping. A module to extract air temperature at the surface pressure level was also developed using R extension packages such as rgdal and RcppArmadillo. Random forest (RF) models, which estimate mean temperature and CDD with a different set of MODIS data, were trained at 34 sites in South Korea during 2009 - 2018. Then, the values of CDD were calculated over Korean peninsula during the same period using those RF models. It was found that the CDD estimates using the MODIS data explained >74% of the variation in the CDD measurements at the weather stations in North Korea as well as South Korea. These results indicate that temperature data derived from the MODIS atmospheric products would be useful for reliable estimation of CDD. Our results also suggest that the MODIS data can be used for preparation of weather input data for other temperature-based agro-ecological models such as growing degree days or chill units.

In order to produce hydrophilic coating solution, which has superior antifogging and antifouling effect on the glass surface of solar cell module as well as improving photovoltaic efficiency, nanosilica was dispersed in an aqueous solution of Tween 20 and fluorosurfactant composed of decafluorobutane and polyethylene glycol. The antifogging effect at high temperature was excellent for all the coating solutions containing nanosilica, but the antifouling effect was observed when the content of nanosilica was over 6 wt%. As the content of fluorosurfactant increased, the initial water contact angle slightly increased and the antifogging effect remained well until 500 wiping with wet $Wipeol^{(R)}$. The antifouling effect was also excellent regardless of the content of fluorosurfactant, thus 0.1 wt% of the fluorosurfactant was enough for a coating solution production. From the AFM results, when 0.1 wt% to 0.3 wt% of the fluoro surfactant was added, the fractal structure of the coated glass surface was clearly existed and contributed to the better antifouling effect. The transmittance of coated glass surface was highest in TL-1 coating solution containing 0.1 wt% of fluorosurfactant, and the addition of fluorosurfactant in a larger amount than 0.1 wt% did not improve the transmittance. This result is in good agreement with the previous AFM result which shows a high surface roughness as well as a fractal structure formation for the TL-1 coating solution.

The purpose of this study is to improve the fire prevention performance using the fire venetian blind louver subjected to burning by fire flame. The investigation is based on testing 2 full scale specimens, which is $3m{\times}3m$ module, $850mm{\times}1,500mm$ open, and $900mm{\times}900mm{\times}175mm$ venetian blind louver. Two louver thickness (1.5 and 2.0mm) were adopted. The specimens were exposed to fire flame temperature levels of ISO834 at the lower surface of the fire venetian blind louver specimens with exposure duration of one hour in Korea Institute of Construction Technology (KICT). It was found from the test results that the values of distributed temperature, decreased for all specimens for protecting to fire flame by venetian blind louver. The results of tests were a good fire prevention performance between in initial to 6 mins. At 60 minutes around ISO 834 fire loading, the percentages of distributed temperature in 500mm and 800mm height ranged between 11 and 10% respectively, regardless of louver thickness. This study, therefore, will improve the fire venetian blind louver for fire protection and prevention performance.
Korea expects a shortage in storage capacity for spent fuels at reactor sites. Therefore, a need for more metal and/or concrete casks for storage systems is anticipated for either the reactor site or away from the reactor for interim storage. For the purpose of interim storage and transportation, a dual purpose metal cask that can load 21 spent fuel assemblies is being developed by Korea Radioactive Waste Management Corporation (KRMC) in Korea. At first the gamma and neutron flux for the design basis fuel were determined assuming in-core environment (the temperature, pressure, etc. of the moderator, boron, cladding, $UO_2$ pellets) in which the design basis fuel is loaded, as input data. The evaluation simulated burnup up to 45,000 MWD/MTU and decay during ten years of cooling using the SAS2H/OGIGEN-S module of the SCALE5.1 system. The results from the source term evaluation were used as input data for the final shielding evaluation utilizing the MCNP Code, which yielded the effective dose rate. The design of the cask is based on the safety requirements for normal storage conditions under 10 CFR Part 72. A radiation shielding analysis of the metal storage cask optimized for loading 21 design basis fuels was performed for two cases; one for a single cask and the other for a $2{\times}10$ cask array. For the single cask, dose rates at the external surface of the metal cask, 1m and 2m away from the cask surface, were evaluated. For the $2{\times}10$ cask array, dose rates at the center point of the array and at the center of the casks' height were evaluated. The results of the shielding analysis for the single cask show that dose rates were considerably higher at the lower side (from the bottom of the cask to the bottom of the neutron shielding) of the cask, at over 2mSv/hr at the external surface of the cask. However, this is not considered to be a significant issue since additional shielding will be installed at the storage facility. The shielding analysis results for the $2{\times}10$ cask array showed exponential decrease with distance off the sources. The controlled area boundary was calculated to be approximately 280m from the array, with a dose rate of 25mrem/yr. Actual dose rates within the controlled area boundary will be lower than 25mrem/yr, due to the decay of radioactivity of spent fuel in storage.

In this study, the effect of the shade level, water flow rate applied to the shades and the temperature of water on the greenhouse cooling was investigated depending on the shade level of 0, 35, 55, 75%, and water flow rate and water temperature by the test on the small wooden frames to find out the low cost cooling method. With increasing of the dry bulb temperature of outside air, the dry bulb temperature in the wooden frames increased. For the frames with the shade and water, inside temperatures of the frames were lower of -0.2$\sim$-1.2$^{\circ}C$ than the temperature of the outside air and higher than the water temperature. For the frames without water, inside temperatures of the frames were higher of 1.7$\sim$4$^{\circ}C$ than the outside and not affected by the shade level very much. The water flow rate and the temperature of the water were not the important factors to decrease the inside temperatures in the frames. The black globe temperature became lower with increasing of shade level. The shade frames with water curtain showed the best cooling effect because of reducing thermal radiation and cooling the plastic film cover. The surface temperatures of the plastic film cover for the water supplied modules became lower with increasing of the shade level. The relative humidity was decreased with the dry bulb temperature in the frame increasing and not affected by the dry bulb temperature of the outside air for the frames with the shade and water.

A solar heat and power hybrid system can simultaneously generate electricity and thermal energy. In this study, several experiments were carried out with a solar heat and power hybrid unit. Then, a method to increase the photovoltaic efficiency and amount of thermal energy was suggested based on a comparative analysis. The experiment was conducted using only the photovoltaic system as a reference case, with the photovoltaic-thermal air system as a hybrid case. A numerical increase in the photovoltaic efficiency per $1^{\circ}C$ was suggested based on a comparative data analysis of these two cases. In this experiment, the surface temperature on the air hybrid system was $13.52^{\circ}C$ lower than that in the reference case, and the photovoltaic efficiency was increased by 5.09. The amount of thermal energy produced was 15.69 Wt per $1^{\circ}C$ difference between the ambient and outlet temperatures. In this paper, therefore, a photovoltaic efficiency increase of 0.34 per $1^{\circ}C$ is proposed for the air hybrid system based on the analysis of the experimental data.
