  • In this paper, we propose an excellent ultrasonic transceiver system based on a QPSK modulation technique for underwater communication. The transmitter sends a still image at the level of 187dB re $1{\mu}Pa/V@1m$ through a power amplifier by driving an ultrasonic sensor. The receiver performs digital conversion at the 100kHz sampling frequency, demodulation and decoding process for the image sent from the transmitter through the underwater communication. We have shown that the processed image at the receiver is almost the same as the orignal one. The maximum detection distance of the system proposed in this paper is approximately 1.17km. To cope with the difficulties of transmission loss, this paper proposes, implements and analyzes important parameters of sensors and circuits used in the system. Most of the underwater communication has focused on the transmission of audio signal, but this paper suggests an efficient underwater communication system for still image transmission.

  • This paper presents and compares several techniques that detect the symbol rate of unknown received signal. Symbol rate is detected from the power spectral density of the circuits such as the delay and multiplier circuit, the square law circuit, and analytic signal, etc. As a result of discrete Fourier transform of the output signals of these circuits, a lot of spectral lines and some peaks appear in frequency domain and the position of first peak is corresponding to the symbol rate. If a spectral line on the frequency that is not located in symbol rate is larger than the first peak, the symbol rate is erroneously detected. Thus, the ratio between the value of first peak and the highest side spectral line is used for the measure of the performance of symbol rate detector. For the MPSK modulation, the analytic signal method shows better performance than the delay and multiplier and square law circuits when the received signal power is lager than -20dB. It is also noted that the delay and multiplier circuit is not able to detect the symbol rate for the QAM modulation.

  • A sensorless motor control scheme with conventional back-Electro Motive Force (EMF) sensing based on zero crossing point (ZCP) detection has been widely used in various applications. However, there are several problems with the conventional method for effectively driving sensorless brushless motors. For example, a phase mismatch of 30 degrees occurs between the ZCP and commutation time. Additionally, most of the motor speed/current controls are achieved based on a pulse width modulation (PWM) method, which generates significant noise that distracts the back-EMF sensing. Due to the PWM switching, the ZCP is not deterministic, and thus the efficiency of the motor is reduced because the phase transition points become uncertain. Moreover, the motor driving performance is degraded at a low speed range due to the effect of PWM noise. To solve these problems, an improved back-EMF detection method based on a differential line method is proposed in this paper. In addition, the proposed sensorless BLDC driver addresses the problems by using a variable voltage driver generated from a buck converter. The variable voltage driver does not generate the PWM switching noise. Consequently, the proposed sensorless motor driver improves 1) the signal-to-noise ratio of back-EMF, 2) the operation range of a BLDC motor, and 3) the torque characteristics. The proposed sensorless motor driver is verified through simulations and experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose an audio watermarking method using the attribute of tonal masker. First, the attribute of tonal masker as an audio watermarking attribute is analyzed. According to existing researches, it is possible to be imperceptible modulation for the energies of the frequencies that compose a tonal masker. And when the relation between the tone energy and the left or right frequency energy after various signal processing is compared with the one before the processing, very few changes are showed. We propose an audio watermarking method using these attributes of tonal masker. A watermark bit is embedded by the modulation of the difference between the two neighboring frequency energies of a tone. In the detection, the modulated the tonal masker is searched using the key wed in the embedding without original audio and the embedded watermark bit is detected. After each attack of noise insertion, band-pass filtering, re-sampling, compression, echo transform and equalization, the detection error ratios of the proposed method were average 0.11%, 1.26% for Classics and Pops. And the SDG(Subjective Diff-Grades) scale evaluation of the sound quality of the watermarked audio result in the average SDG -0.31.

  • In this paper, in order to apply the $\pi/4$ shift QPSK to TCM, we propose the $\pi/8$ shift 8PSK modulation technique and the trellis-coded $\pi/8$ shift 8PSK performing signal set expansion and partition by phase difference. In addition, the Viterbi decoder with branch metrics of the squared Euclidean distance of the first phase difference as well as the Lth phase different is introduced in order to improve the bit error rate(BER) performance in differential detection of the trellis-coded $\pi/8$ shift 8PSK. The proposed Viterbi decoder is conceptually the same as the sliding multiple detection by using the branch metric with first and Lth order phase difference. We investigate the performance of the uncoded $\pi/4$ shift QPSK and the trellis-coded $\pi/8$ shift 8PSK with or without the Lth phase difference metric in an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) using the Monte Carlo simulation. The study shows that the $\pi/4$ shift QPSK with the Trellis-code i.e. the trellis-coded $\pi/8$ shift 8PSK is an attractive scheme for power and bandlimited systems and especially, the Viterbi decoder with first and Lth phase difference metrics improves BER performance. Also, the nest proposed algorithm can be used in the TC $\pi/8$ shift 8PSK as well as TCMDPSK.

  • Cable modems typically are implemented by a forward error correction(FEC) scheme. The ITU-T Recommendation J-38 Annex B specifies using 64- and 256- quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and extended RS coding scheme. In implementing the cable modem, there are some problems to fabricate and fitting on FPGA chip. First, many clocks are needed in implementing cable modem because of different code rate and different modulation types. To reduce the number of clocks, we use the two memories, which are different clock speed for reading and writing data. Second, this system lost the bit-synchronization and frame-synchronization in decoder, the system recognize that all data is error. This paper solves the problems by using simple 5-stage registers and unique sync-word. Based on solutions for about problems, the cable modem is fabricated on FPGA chip name as Vertex II pro xc2vp30-5 by Xilinx, and we confirmed the effectiveness of the results.

  • Jet engine modulation(JEM) signals are widely used for target recognition. These signals coming from a potentially hostile aircraft provide specific information about the jet engine. In order to obtain the number of blades, which is uniquely provided by the JEM signal, one must extract the spool rate, which is the rotation speed of the blades. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to extract the spool rate from a weak JEM signal. A criterion is developed to extract the spool rate from the JEM signal by analyzing the intensity of the JEM signal component. The weak signal is first subjected to a high-pass filtering-based process, which modifies it to facilitate spool rate extraction. We then apply a peak detection process and extract the spool rate. The technique is simpler than the existing CEMD or WD method, is accurate, and greatly reduces the time required.

  • FMCW LiDAR system with robust target detection capabilities even under adverse operating conditions such as snow, rain, and fog is addressed in this paper. Our focus is primarily on enhancing the performance of FMCW LiDAR by improving the characteristics of the frequency-modulated laser, which directly influence range resolution, coherence length, and maximum measurement range etc. of LiDAR. We describe the utilization of an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder laser interferometer to measure real-time changes of the lasing frequency and to correct frequency modulation errors through an optical phase-locked loop technique. To extend the coherence length of laser, we employ an extended-cavity laser diode as the laser source and implement a laser interferometer with an photonic integrated circuit for miniaturization of optical system. The developed FMCW LiDAR system exhibits a bandwidth of 10.045GHz and a remarkable distance resolution of 0.84mm.

  • A Ka-band microstrip array antenna for wide-range detection of moving targets is analyzed through a photonicassisted reactive-near-field characterization technique. The antenna array employs a 3-dB-tapered feed network to suppress the sidelobe level while retaining a wide azimuth beamwidth for a wide detection range. The relative nearelectric field patterns of the array and its 3-dB-tapered feed lines have been measured using an electro-optic fieldmapping technique for minimally invasive millimeter-wave sensing. A number of typical limitations on the technique, involving bandwidth, low signal-modulation depth, and high laser-induced noise in high-frequency applications, have been overcome by suppressing the carrier portion of the optical interrogation beam.

  • For the low power and low cost transceivers, direct sequence spread spec01m frequency-shift keying (DSSS-FSK) is proposed. A transmitter of the DSSS-FSK signal can be implemented by a simple direct modulation using the phase locked loop. Since the DSSS-FSK signal has negligible power around the carrier frequency, low cost direct conversion receiver can be used. Optimum coherent and semi-coherent correlation detection methods for the DSSS-FSK signal are proposed and analyzed. Segmented semi-coherent correlation detection method is proposed to improve the bit error rate performance in the large carrier frequency offset.
