  • This paper presents a study on the off-line handwritten Hangul (Korean) character recognition using the partially connected neural network (PCNN), which is based on partial connections between the input receptive fields and the hidden nodes. The hidden nodes of three PCNNs have ten receptive fields and different input feature sets. And we introduce modular partially connected neural network (MPCNN), The MPCNN combines three PCNNs with a merging network. The learning scheme of the proposed networks is composed of two steps: PCNN learning step and the merging step of combining three PCNN s. In the merging step, another merging PCNN network is introduced and trained by regarding the hidden output of each PCNN as a new input feature vector. The performance of the proposed classifier is verified on the recognition of 18 off-line handwritten Hangul characters widely used in business cards in Korea.

  • Australian railway networks possess a large amount of aging timber components and need to replace them in excess of 280 thousands $m^3$ per year. The relatively high turnover of timber sleepers (crossties in a plain track), bearers (skeleton ties in a turnout), and transoms (bridge cross beams) is responsible for producing greenhouse gas emissions 6 times greater than an equivalent reinforced concrete counterparts. This paper presents an innovative solution for the replacement of aging timber transoms installed on existing railway bridges along with the incorporation of a continuous walkway platform, which is proven to provide environmental, safety and financial benefits. Recent developments for alternative composite materials to replace timber components in railway infrastructure construction and maintenance demonstrate some compatibility issues with track stiffness as well as structural and geometrical track systems. Structural concrete are generally used for new railway bridges where the comparatively thicker and heavier fixed slab track systems can be accommodated. This study firstly demonstrates a novel and resilient alterative by incorporating steel-concrete composite slab theory and combines the capabilities of being precast and modulated, in order to reduce the depth, weight and required installation time relative to conventional concrete direct-fixation track slab systems. Clear benefits of the new steel-concrete composites are the maintainability and constructability, especially for existing railway bridges (or brown fields). Critical considerations in the design and finite element modelling for performance benchmarking of composite structures and their failure modes are highlighted in this paper, altogether with risks, compatibilities and compliances.

  • Password-based authentication key exchange (PAKE) protocols in the literature typically assume a password that is shared between a client and a server. PAKE has been applied in various environments, especially in the “client-server” applications of remotely accessed systems, such as e-banking. With the rapid developments in modern communication environments, such as ad-hoc networks and ubiquitous computing, it is customary to construct a secure peer-to-peer channel, which is quite a different paradigm from existing paradigms. In such a peer-to-peer channel, it would be much more common for users to not share a password with others. In this paper, we consider password-based authentication key exchange in the three-party setting, where two users do not share a password between themselves but only with one server. The users make a session-key by using their different passwords with the help of the server. We propose an efficient password-based authentication key exchange protocol with different passwords that achieves forward secrecy in the standard model. The protocol requires parties to only memorize human-memorable passwords; all other information that is necessary to run the protocol is made public. The protocol is also light-weighted, i.e., it requires only three rounds and four modular exponentiations per user. In fact, this amount of computation and the number of rounds are comparable to the most efficient password-based authentication key exchange protocol in the random-oracle model. The dispensation of random oracles in the protocol does not require the security of any expensive signature schemes or zero-knowlegde proofs.

Abstract Up to now, a lot of efforts have been made for the management of telecommunication networks and equipment, but less effort has been made for the realization of higher-layer service and business management. There are recently worldwide growing interests for applying CORBA technology for the realization of higher layer Telecommunication Management Network (TMN) management functions. In this paper, we compare the features of TMN and CORBA with respect to information model, and operational behavior. And then, we propose a platform architecture for the efficient integration of CORBA technology within TMN framework. Within platform architecture, GDMO/ASN.1 to IDL translator has been designed and implemented for translating TMN management information into CORBA IDL interface. The TMN/CORBA gateway is also designed for realization of the interaction translation specification of JIDM task force. The libraries and code generators have been designed and implemented in a modular fashion to provide the functional extensibility.
