REDUCTION OF HIGH FREQUENCY EXCITATIONS IN A CAM PROFILE BY USING MODIFIED SMOOTHING SPLINE CURVES

  • High frequency excitation terms in a cam profile can excite vibration of a cam follower system. In this paper, modified smoothing spline curves are used to reduce the high frequency terms. The essential difference between the proposed method and other existing approaches is its ability to make the principal cam motions smooth while still exactly satisfying boundary conditions of follower displacement, velocity and acceleration. The boundary values usually depend on the ramp properties of a cam. Our method, thus, allows designers to smooth the existing cam motion without any damages on its ramp areas. Because the ramp height, velocity and acceleration are maintained exactly, more radical smoothing is possible. An example shows that the proposed method can be a powerful tool of cam profile smoothing, which removes high frequency components in the cam profile excitations without any changes in ramp properties.

  • Smoothing spline estimators are modified to remove boundary bias effects using the technique proposed in Eubank and Speckman (1991). An O(n) algorithm is developed for the computation of the resulting estimator as well as associated generalized cross-validation criteria, etc. The asymptotic properties of the estimator are studied for the case of a linear smoothing spline and the upper bound for the average mean squared error of the estimator given in Eubank and Speckman (1991) is shown to be asymptotically sharp in this case.

  • The linear smoothing spline estimator is modified to remove boundary bias effects. The resulting estimator can be calculated efficiently using an O(n) algorithm that is developed for the computation of fitted values and associated smoothing parameter selection criteria. The asymptotic properties of the estimator are studied for the case of a uniform design. In this case the mean squared error properties of boundary corrected linear smoothing splines are seen to be asymptotically competitive with those for standard second order kernel smoothers.

Experimental and statistical analysis of hybrid-fiber-reinforced recycled aggregate concrete

  • Although concrete is the most widely used construction material, its deficiency in shrinkage and low tensile resistance is undeniable. However, the aforementioned defects can be partially modified by addition of fibers. On the other hand, possibility of adding waste materials in concrete has provided a new ground for use of recycled concrete aggregates in the construction industry. In this study, a constant combination of recyclable coarse and fine concrete aggregates was used to replace the corresponding aggregates at 50% substitution percentage. Moreover, in order to investigate the effects of fibers on mechanical and durability properties of recycled aggregate concrete, the amounts of 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% steel fibers (ST) and 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.15% polypropylene (PP) fibers by volumes were used individually and in hybrid forms. Compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), water absorption, toughness, elastic modulus and shrinkage of samples were investigated. The results of mechanical properties showed that PP fibers reduced the compressive strength while positive impact of steel fibers was evident both in single and hybrid forms. Tensile and flexural strength of samples were improved and the energy absorption of samples containing fibers increased substantially before and after crack presence. Growth in toughness especially in hybrid fiber-reinforced specimens retarded the propagation of cracks. Modulus of elasticity was decreased by the addition of PP fibers while the contrary trend was observed with the addition of steel fibers. PP fibers decreased the ultrasonic pulse velocity slightly and had undesirable effect on water absorption. However, steel fiber caused negligible decline in UPV and a small impact on water absorption. Steel fibers reduce the drying shrinkage by up to 35% when was applied solely. Using fibers also resulted in increasing the ductility of samples in failure. In addition, mechanical properties changes were also evaluated by statistical analysis of MATLAB software and smoothing spline interpolation on compressive, flexural, and indirect tensile strength. Using shell interpolation, the optimization process in areas without laboratory results led to determining optimal theoretical points in a two-parameter system including steel fibers and polypropylene.

Development of a Dike Line Selection Method Using Multispectral Orthoimages and Topographic LiDAR Data Taken in the Nakdong River Basins

  • Dike lines are important features for describing the detailed shapes of dikes and for detecting topographic changes on dike surfaces. Historically, dike lines have been generated using only the LiDAR data. This paper proposes a new methodology for selecting an appropriate dike line on various dike surfaces using the topographic LiDAR data and multispectral orthoimages taken in the Nakdong River basins. The fi rst baselines were generated from the given LiDAR data using the modified convex hull algorithm and smoothing spline function, and the second baselines were generated from the given orthoimages by the Canny operator. Next, one baseline was selected among the two baselines at 10m intervals by comparing their elevations, and the selected baseline at 10m interval was defined as the dike line segment. Finally, the selected dike line segments were connected to construct the 3D dike lines. The statistical results show that the dike lines generated using both the LiDAR data and multispectral orthoimages had the improved horizontal and vertical accuracies than the dike lines generated only using the LiDAR data on the various dike surfaces.
